First time post for me too.

I agree with Splash that Mac will be in trouble if Conboy takes 20-25 shots this year.  He will need to learn to trust his teammates to make open shots as he will likely face double teams sort of like BVT a few years ago.  While not as athletic as Ike, Conboy is much bulkier so he has the chance to be as big of a force as him.  Mac has a new transfer from Concordia to go along with Bosman opposite Conboy so they should at least be solid inside.  Question is, where will the sparkplug off the bench, Hollander go if the transfer takes his playing time?  I hear he will likely move into a small forward/guard role this year.  Replacing Jackson will be the key, its up to either Johnson or Liddell to bring the ball up the court.  I would guess Johnson as it would limit the scoring opportunities for Liddell.

So Pipes, does this transfer from Concordia to Mac have a name?

And am I correct in assuming it's one of the two Concordias here in the state that he transferred from, & not one of the other 6-7 Concordias that are scattered throughout the nation?

I know, I know, minor details but significant nonetheless.  Aside from that, welcome to the board!  ;)

Drake, I believe the transfer that Pipes is referring to is Andy Stein from Concordia University in St. Paul.  I saw them play last season once and he didn't play so I'm not sure I can offer much of an assessment.  Either way like splash said, the Scots need a point guard if they are to have similar success to last season.

Welcome to the board Pipes.

SJU4Life, I think that if Coach Smith would just let his guys play a little that the Johnnies could be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the conference this year.  Regardless they should be a better team, having lost no one, and as you said, they got a few significant transfers.

I believe that all the MIAC teams play their last games in the dome. on the same day. its like the prep bowl only with college teams

It's actually been several years since this was the case.

You guys have to be kidding me.  I realize that because Ike was awarded a D1 scholarship, us skeptical D3ers have lofty expectations for the transfer... but to say that Ike is "not that good" or [only good in the MIAC] is professing a ridiculous lack of basketball knowledge.  Whether a 6'4 post can push him off the block and he only gets 8 points off put backs, or not.  A guy who can deter penetrators from coming in the lane, grab 20 boards in a game, and have a game changing dunk or put back dunk commands respect at any level, and will certainly be a HUGE reason the Tommies dominate this year.  Maybe some judgements are clouded by the fact that he talks trash and we have some crazy notion that D1ers back in our league have to score 30 a game and grab 20 boards, but HE FLAT OUT CHANGES GAMES.

local coach,
Your exactly correct about coach smith and letting us play. if you were to poll the whole team i would say 90% would tell you they want smith to change how we play.  We are going to have an extremely deep bench this year with numerous players at the 2 and 3 position and would love to spread the floor but he likes to use our nebraska fellas and what not.  We have a great chance to be a top 4 team but we gotta get it to click first.
On the topic of ike, i mean this could go on forever if he is good or not that good. im not saying he sucks. But the way you just talked h im up along with others, you make him sound like he is a great player who every team fears and he is unstoppable.  He is very stopable and he is not a GREAT player.  he is the tallest player in the league and pretty athletic, as a coach I would EXPECT him to get no less than 10 boards a game, that shouldnt be hard for him. Plus you go out on a lim and call him a D1er?  He is not a D1er, he is far from it. he is not good enough to play at St. cloud state.  Because he came from a D1 school does not mean he is D1 good.   I consider him d3 and nothing better~!

Well folks we're less then 3 weeks away from the start of the basketball season.  Is anyone else excited like I am?
It looks like I will actually be able to see a few more games this season versus the previous year.

Does anyone have any new tidbits to offer?  I was talking with some people at St. Olaf recently and they said that the game against Hamline is in fact being moved from STO to the Metrodome.  Apparently the opportunity to play a game there came up and both coaches jumped at it.  The date is February 1.

Other then that I haven't spoken with my "usual sources" as of late.  By the way, does anyone know if the Gophers are having a "Midnight Madness" this year?

sju4life,

I agree that Ike is not a great player, at least not yet. He did have some stretches last year where he got taken out of games mentally. However, when he played intense and everything came together for him, he dominated. I think he will become the great player this year that Mig is talking about. It sounds like he's used the offseason to get more muscle and it sounds like he won't be as easy to push around. He's the kind of player that can dominate inside, and like Mig said, can change a game at any moment with a thunderous dunk. I've seen St. Cloud State play a couple games in the last two years, and he could play there, in fact he would probably start. I think he'll contend for MIAC POY this season and become the great player that we're hearing about.

what TH4L had to say about ike is the exact reason i also dont consider him a D1 player and thats why he is in the MIAC...he is a very good player at the d3 level though

localcoach...no Gopher Midnight Madness as they're heading up to Brainerd for a week of camp.

Word is they've got a number of injuries that are causing some concern. Hope Willliams and Tollackson have gotten bigger, stronger, better....Coleman is better but he's still not a "5" type of player.

quick note before i end the discussion on IKE because like i said it could go on forever, but i dont think there is any way that he will be up for player of the year.  If he did bulk up and learned a few post moves i guess maybe there is a minimal chance but i just dont see it.
On the gophers note, i heard that as unreal as it may sound John williams had an unreal summer in the howard pulley league.  Sure that means nothing cuz its a summer league but it is the best players from around thats for sure.  From a good source i heard one game that his stat line was 12 points, 12 boards and 18 blocks!  SPencer will always be better than him offensively but defensively he is tough, strong and super natural athleticism!
Side note, ryan saunders plays for the gophers and prolly isnt good enough to start at most miac schools!

Here is a new topic for us to discuss.. I know the WIAC talks about it a lot but how many teams do you think the conference can get in this year because of the expansion to 64 teams? Do we have a shot a getting at least two? If I am not mistaken. This conference is usually one of the toughest conferences in the nation. If I had to pick I believe St. Thomas and GAC would be the early favorites. Could any other team sneak in and take a spot away?

The NCAA tourney doesn't expand to 64 teams yet, but I believe is at 58 teams for the upcoming year.

When does this tournament expand?

For the 2005-06 season there will be one playoff spot for every 6.5 eligible teams in Division III. That projects to be a 58-team men's tournament and about a 61-team women's tournament. Currently there are 380 and 420 eligible schools, respectively, although some choose to participate in other tournaments (NAIA, NCCAA, etc.). [/font] ]

Unless two teams have monster years, I think the MIAC will only have one selection for the tourney.

Another scenario would be if only one team had a monster year (18-2 in MIAC play, 22-4 overall or something close to that), then lost in the MIAC championship game.  Then there could be two from the MIAC in the tourney.
