WOW that dunk was incredible! Nice find on the clip Drake.

Any pick-ems for this week's non-conference games???? ???

It seems HuHoops has turned into a dead cricket.  :) He was supposed to be running the Pickems. He hasn't even posted about his beloved Pipers.

Carlies lost to UW-Lax- 62-56.

SMU continues their hot, early season success as they run their overall record to 6-1 with a a 69-55 win over Viterbo.

Does anyone know of some good bars/restaurants around the St. Thomas campus?  I'm going to the Point at St Thomas game next Wednesday, I'm a Point alum so hopefully you don't hold that against me.

Burger & Brew

Groveland Tap:  #1 primarily because of location. Less than 5 minutes from UST.

Better be a beer/wine drinker if you're hitting up the GT. No hard liquor, but a great little place that I grew up shooting pool in the back room after school.

Off the final week of the year and was hoping to catch a MIAC game....closest one? River Falls...I think not.

It depends on what you're looking for:

All of the restaurants listed below are within 10 minutes of the UST campus. Most are less than 6-7 minutes away.

Burger & Brew

Groveland Tap:  #1 primarily because of location. Less than 5 minutes from UST.

http://www.grovelandtap.com/

Blue Door Pub:  Arguably, Blue Door probably has the best burgers of all the restaurants listed, but the wait can be long because the restaurant is much smaller.

http://www.thebluedoorpubmn.com/

St. Clair Broiler: Good neighborhood restaurant, burgers, across the street from Macalester College Athletic fields.

http://www.stclairbroiler.com/stclair/history.cfm

Shamrocks:  Probably the furthest away at 10 minutes.  Very good burgers.  Their sister restaurant – The Nook was destroyed in a fire early Tuesday AM.

Casual Restaurants

Highland Grill

http://www.highlandgrill.com/

Longfellow Grill.  The two Grills & Groveland Tap which is listed above are owned by the same restaurant holding company.  Good food at all 3 locations.

Drake- you missed the best of all eateries in the UST area- Kim's Chow Mein, home of the best fried chicken on earth (and this coming from someone who lived in NC, VA & MD which all boast the best fried chicken in Dixie).  The Chinese food is pretty good too :)

Migawd! Mose - you've gotta be kidding me right?  ??? ;D

Actually Kim's isn't bad. For a budget minded college student, or even a belt-tightening, recession avoiding, middle-ager, $5.00 for a half a chicken & huge side of fried rice fits the ticket.  I heard it was a favorite of recent members of the UST basketball team.  But for real fried chicken you need to leave the Mac-Groveland area & get to Lee's & Dee's barbeque, Selby & Victoria. Some chicken wings, a little Louisiana hot sauce, soft drink & you're set. ;)

But back to the UST. I forgot to include Davanni's pizza - Cleveland & Grand. With the ridiculous parking ramp situation at UST, a person would be better off eating at Davanni's, leave their car at the restaurant or on the street, & walk the 2.5 blocks over to the field house.

Ate at Davanni's once, enjoyed the hot sandwiches.

Drake- Lees & Dee's is awesome wings, but its fried chicken pales next to Kim's... the closest I've tasted was a place in New Bern NC called Auntie's-- but the meat wasnt as moist as Kim's nor the skin as crunchy. Maybe it doesnt taste as good to those with "opera tastes" but for those of us who like our chicken done right, its perfect (FYI-- there is more to the bird than wings :) )

Kim's fried chicken is a tradition among UST basketballers for 35+ years... it might explain all those Ws and titles   ;D

Well, the WIACERS may have their dunkers, but the MIAC has our singers.

Based on the YouTube video, I'm hoping SMU's Lukas Holland & his fellow band members are focusing on hoops, getting their degrees & professional careers.  I don't think we'll be seeing them on American Idol anytime soon.  :-* ;D

Nice effort though! ;)

tomt,

I would definitely hit Tiffany's. You hear of it more as a drinking spot, but any local will tell you that their menu is the biggest draw. Food is bomb!

tomt4525

DoubleO, as of now that is my plan.  My buddies and I are hitting up Tiffany's after the game and see where that takes us later in the night.  Thanks for all the replies everyone, greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays everyone!

MIAC YTD Non-conference (N-C) W-L Record:  32-15

MIAC teams have just a handful of non-conference games, 6-7 games, to play between now and the first of the year so I thought I'd provide a quick year-to-date update.

As I listed earlier, the MIAC's N-C record this season is 32-15.  Last year the MIAC finished with a 36-19 N-C W-L record.  We'll have to get a bit of luck to top last year's record as MIAC teams have two games scheduled against UW-Stevens Point, one game against UW-River Falls, UW-La Crosse, and UW-Whitewater from the WIAC.  I've still not heard or read anything about a rescheduled game between MAC & UWSP after they were snowed out earlier this month.

SMU is in a tourney at Illinois College at the end of the month with two games against a couple of Midwest region teams:  Millikin from the CCIW the first night & the winner/loser of the Clarke College/Illinois College game the 2nd night.

Misc. comments:

*The MIAC still rules the UMAC - yawn  ;), 12-4 for the year. In the 09-10 season the MIAC was 15-1 against the UMAC.

*Even in a down year, the WIAC is becoming the bully from the east.  They currently hold a 6-1 advantage over the MIAC for the season. I also think they would be regarded as favorites in the 5 remaining inter- conference games for this season.

*Let's hope we can pull off a couple of upsets to balance out the record a bit. Last year we had a more respectable showing as we ended up going 4-6 against the WIAC.

Once all of the N-C games are completed I'll post a breakdown by the various leagues.

I sort of wonder if that Mac/UWSP game will be made up.  If you look at the schedules, there aren't too many opportunities.  Mac has an off week between 1/22-1/29 but Point plays (at Whitewater).  Point has an off week between 2/2-2/9, but Mac plays (at St. Olaf).

And the WIAC conference game that was postponed (Eau Claire vs. Stout) is being replayed on 1/2... Stevens Point is free, but Mac plays the next night at Concordia-Moorhead.

I think the issed opportunity may have already passed.  Mac didn't have a game scheduled between the Point game and the River Falls game on 12/29.  Point didn't have a game scheduled between the Mac game and UST, tomorrow.  Perhaps it should have been played on 12/18?  I'm not sure.

I figure finals probably fit in there somewhere... but geez, what's more important, finals, or a game between the defending national champs and a team on a 24 game losing streak?

Oh.

Point Spec- there are also NCAA regulation to consider not just open dates.  I dont know the exact ruling, but you can only play/practice a certain number of weeks, resulting in most teams taking a week or even 2 off, usually around finals and the holiday.  It might be hard, if not impossible, to reschedule the game...maybe the 2 can meet while the rest of us are in the NCAA playoffs?  :)

Zing! +k Mose.  :D (however, it would require a total collapse during the conference season to keep Point out of the tourney. But who knows, stranger things have happened.)

I was going to add...

PS – Like you, I wouldn't be surprised if the game is cancelled.  When I first saw Mac's schedule, I thought MAC's coach Whittle showed a lot of chutzpah or craziness in scheduling, or even agreeing to schedule this game with one of DIII's national powerhouses - Stevens Point.

But I tell you what, I would derive immense satisfaction if MAC would ever make you pay for that smug "24 game losing streak" comment. One can hope eh? ;)  Just you wait, sputter, sputter, clenched teeth. :-*  So mebbe, UST can do a little representing tomorrow night for their oppressed Scot brethren & extract a bit of MIAC revenge Tommie style.  Joe Scott where are you? Go dunk on that UWSP grad & seminary student over in the corner.  ;D

Rumor has it that Papa Hoops has contracted DP's Fine Arts Virus. The FAV has caused Drake to miss MIAC games for the opera.

Word on the street is thet Papa has caved in to Momma Hoop's desire to see Billy Elliott  tonight, resulting in a "no show" for the UST/UWSP game.

Expectations are that Papa will pull several muscles attempting to replicate the "Billy jump" :)
