Congratulations to Coach Steve Fritz on a outstanding coaching career! What an awesome way to go out-DIII National Championship!

I wonder if this was a preemptive move by Coach Fritz and the athletic department to keep Coach Tauer at St. Thomas?  I would think that coach Tauer would be in line for a head coaching job - such as UW Eau Claire.

I am sure that the understanding has been in place for a while.

possibly, but if history is a guide, its not overly likely. Ask anyone involved in the selection process that ultimately hired Coach Feely's long-time assistant.  :-X

Congrats to Coach Fritz on an amazing career, capped with the rarest and greatest of endings-- a national title.  I've known Steve since he was a dark haired assistant (and we both were more slender), and have always admired the class he shows. I was hoping he'd stick around long enough to eclipse Coach Smith in wins (my calculations had him passing Smitty in 2017 if both continued coaching) but Steve has never been concerned with records, just wins and success.

Enjoy the reitrement Steve, but that AD job should keep you plenty busy!

Cograts and good luck to Coach Tauer...those are some big loafers you will be filling!!

Long day at the grindstone.

Wow - that is big news!  And what a way to ride off into the sunset - national championship.   Congratulations Coach Fritz.

On the other hand, I'm somewhat puzzled by the "interim" head coach tag they assigned to longtime assistant Coach Johnny Tauer.  He's bright, articulate, a St. Thomas guy, knows his Xs & Os, & obviously a dynamite recruiter. Where else are they going to go?  Not Snelling & Hewitt are they?  ;)

I think it is more of a formality than anything... Coach Semling at UWSP was named the interim head coach after Coach Bennett retired too even though Sem was a virtual shoe-in and did end up getting the job.

I don't know what the policies are at UST, but in the U of Wis system, that was required.  It might be at UST too.

Darren Wolfson's Twitter has him quoting someone who says that Tucker is in fact attending Hamline next year... another tweet of his quotes someone who says they directly talked to him in Dinkytown today, and he's walking on at the U of M.

Guess this fits into all the Hamline talk since he is an Alum...

Thoughts???

As long as people continue to believe that anyone can coach - They will also continue to believe that anyone can criticize a coach.

From the Pioneer Press & Charley Walters column,

QuoteBloomington Jefferson point guard Marcus Alipate, brother of Gophers freshman quarterback Moses Alipate, is headed to the University of St. Thomas to play basketball

Younger Alipate could be another version of Tyler Nicolai by the time he's finished.  He's cut out of a similar mold, about the same height, nice stroke, tough all-around ball player. I saw him & older brother Moses take on Bloomington Kennedy's, now St. Olaf Oles, Bobby Fong & Alfred Jaryan a few years ago.  Marcus Alipate was a FY & I thought this kid could be a player if he could grow some by his senior year.  Evidently, his older brother  got all the height in the family, & Marcus got the quickness. Still, Marcus Alipate could be a real nice recruit for UST.

According to Alipate's Rivals page, he held two division-I offers.

Sounds like UST is handing out their "leadership" scholarships again...

Yet another recruiting gem from the PP & Charley Walters' column the other day -

QuoteEden Prairie High School's leading basketball scorer last season - 6-3 wing Dylan Stewart - and 6-7 Conner Nord, are headed for the University of St. Thomas.

You would think with Dave Flom, a former Gustie as the boys' head basketball coach at Eden Prairie along with Doug Espenson, another Gustie, they could steer some of their players to Gustavus.  Too bad the Candy Man is required to wear a muzzle with his new coaching responsibilities.   :)

Could he just post a current picture of himself after reading your last post, without any written comments?

MIAC transfer updates, confirmed.

Carleton adds inside muscle and scoring with the transfer of 6'6" Taylor Hanson (Minnehaha Academy) who played his FR year out in Connecticut.

St Olaf continues to get better and deeper with the transfer of 6'4" wing Josh Pratt (St. Anthony) who played his FR year at HU.

St Johns adds a athletic wing with the transfer of 6'4" Tim Markoe (Hill-Murray) who played his FR year at HU.

HU players Andy Voigt (Hipp's backup) and Jordan Schmidt (started FR & SO year) have transferred out of the MIAC.  I heard Jordan's calf/leg injury will prevent him from playing collegiate ball due to an infection he had this past year.  Jordan was a very good player at HU, it's too bad his career had to end this early.

Pretty good numbers on a bad team in a very good league.

Carleton's Taylor Hanson - Mark my words, this kid is a skilled beast & will help Carleton stay in the upper echelon of the MIAC.  He will keep the N for "nasty" in Knights, hi-energy, fun player to watch.

St Olaf's Josh Pratt -  A change of scenery might be good for Pratt, but the competition for clock might get intense with All-MIAC FY Conner Gunderson & the other young, talented Oles.

St. Johns' Tim Markoe - Yawn.  :)

Hanline's Andy Voight & Jordan Schmidt -  Both Voigt & Schmidt were talented players & Schmidt earned All-MIAC FY several years ago.  The Pipers will miss them.

With all of the Hamline transfers I'm reminded of an old expression – "like rats fleeing a sinking ship."  Is the Hamline Admiral still at the helm?  ;)

Summer!!!  Awesome.

Steve Fritz was amazing and a class act to boot.   He will be missed, but with Tauer stepping in, the Tommie Express will likely not be making too many stops.

Would like to know more about the Eden Prairie feeder system for Tommies.   :)
