That seems kinda low for a school single-game scoring record, especially for a school that's been playing basketball for as long as Gustavus Adolphus.

Bethel has another good player. Kyle Zimmerman (Champlin Park HS and SJU last year) isn't on the roster ;) but is the second leading scorer last night against Crown :)

C'mon Sensei, we're talking a MN version of Hoosiers.  ;D

Has the world gone crazy?!? 45 bones for Seth Anderson - that's incredible.  If Coach Hanson turned him loose I think Anderson has the ability to average over 20pts game.  In recent memory I can't recall any other MIAC guard who can make the intermediate range jumper off curls, & quick screens as effectively as Anderson.  Most kids want to bomb away from the 3 pt line & might hit around a 40% mark if they're lucky. Anderson easily hits at 50% + & he's mostly taking contested jumpers & not the higher percentage layups

Made the trek over to the Hill to watch Olaf open up vs Bethany.  Olaf makes it look easy in the second half - they are deep & talented this year.

The win happens with three scorers on the bench - Fong was resting his back, Pratt pulled his hamstring first day of practice and just now started practicing again and Koch was wearing a boot on his foot.  Stu Neville had a strong game and looked very good.  FY PG Nielsen played well and will be a godd recruit for Koz and the Oles.  The Swede came through with a nice game and 11 points.

NCa11 – interesting observation regarding Manani Beavers at Concordia.  As a FY or SO, he was in the starting lineup for the Cobbs' exhibition game against NDSU last weekend. So obviously the Cobbs were counting on him this season. I wonder what may have happened.

*Kyle who?  Kyle Zimmerman?  Apparently Bethel pulled that name out of the Collegeville air.   :) As of yesterday he wasn't listed on the Bethel roster, nor were any of those FY that are expected to contribute this season.

*It will really be interesting to see if Pratt becomes a valuable contributor at St. Olaf this season.  I've not seen enough of Pratt to have an opinion one way or another, but I do know the Oles will need a healthy Bobby Fong if they want to contend for the title.

In spite of the officials snafu, the Carlies open up with their usual season opener, defensive yawner.

*In other news, UW River Falls was upset by NAIA Viterbo of LaCrosse 73-63 last night, and Chris Palmer did not start, & played only 13 minutes.  5 pts on 1-2 FGA, 2-2 FT, 2 reb, & 1 steal.  Really?

That would be an interesting off-season project... to see what the highest scorer is for various schools.

I know that UWSP's record is 40... done twice by Josh Iserloth in 02 but that isn't close to the WIAC record of 72 by UW River Falls' Nate DeLong who scored 72 back in 1948... and who scored 40 or more at least 6 times.  This pre-dates D-III and technically even the NAIA (the organization was called the NAIB until 1952).  Interestingly, according to WIAC stats, among WIAC schools, only guys from UWRF have ever scored 50+

FWIW, UWSP is two slots ahead of GAC in the all-times win list for D-III.  The other high-wins WIAC school, UWEC has their top scorer at 49.

The kid needs at least 20 minutes! He's a high-energy kid that is very productive when on the court. Play him at the 3 spot and watch him go.

Yeah, but how long have the Gusties been playing that offense? Forever? I doubt it.

Forever? Close enough.   ;)

Legendary Gustie coach Gus Young began coaching at Gustavus in 1949 & coached through 1957.  He in turn begat Gustavus Hall of Fame coach Whitey Skoog who coached 1957 –through 1981.  Skoog begat Mark Hanson. Young, talented Mark Hanson was tutored by the great Whitey Skoog, & became the alltime leading scorer at Gustavus, All-American, & 3 time Gustie MVP. After graduating in 1983, Hanson returned 7 years later in 1990, to begin coaching & restore the greatness & luster that was once the Golden Gusties. And for 22 +seasons, the tall, taciturn man has surveyed the court, guiding his Gusties to greatness. Coach Hanson is a direct descendant of the Gustie Hoosier bloodline  - Gus Young.  :-* :D

Yeah, but the pedigree doesn't necessarily determine the style of play. The pertinent question here is this: Has Gustavus Adolphus always held the score down?

Other real Gusties could answer this question better than I can, but traditionally, they've been more of a deliberate, methodical type of offense. Two or 3 times a year they'll bust out a score in the 80s.  Lately those bust out games have taken place against Buena Vista. Go figure. :)
