THFL, Hanson complains about every call? Really? I'd say he's in the bottom half of the MIAC when it comes how often coaches are up complaining to officials. I will give you this: he does tend to be on the refs much more in games against St. Thomas, especially in the last 5-10 years. The reason for that is because the Gusties have been outmatched talent wise and physically compared to the Tommies. Throw in the Tommies tendency to flop, and some officials who refuse to call a handcheck in the backcourt and Hanson has his reasons for looking like a complainer against the Tommies.

I'd have to agree with gacbacker. I've always felt, at least vs. Carleton, that Coach Hanson picked his spots with the officials. He's certainly not above getting up and making a point known, but there's not the histrionics that I've seen (or have seen) from others in the conference, or even worse on TV at the D1 level. I would put Coach Kalland and Coach Fritz in the same category as Coach Hanson--certainly willing to make a point, but without throwing the suit coat, stomping around, etc.

With all that said, I think if it were me on the sideline, I'd be a stomping, coat-throwing, red-faced, hot mess...

Tommies lose another one at the buzzer.
Some revel in the success of their JV, others enjoy the success of the actual varsity..... ;D ;D 8-)

****************
the varsity success might have to wait another year based upon the recent performances of our respective varsities--if the season ended today and Gustavus was given the tie-breaker and the Pool A, St. Thomas would most likely not get a pool C.

As far as the tiebreaker, assuming UST & GAC both win out,  at present UST holds the upperhand.
#1 is head to head-- they split. #2 and 3 rely on teams finishing above the tied teams which is moot in a tie for first place.  #4 is record against teams below the tied teams in descending order.  Olaf is in 3rd place and is the first team in descending order. GAC lost to the Oles, UST did not.  UST then would be the top seed.

UST & GAC both lost to each other and to Bethel...so unless they lose to other teams, as long as Olaf finishes ahead of SJU, UST wins the tie-breaker.

I do agree that the MIAC is looking at only getting its Pool A team in the big dance this year....UST & GAC would need to both win out, and meet in the MIAC Playoff Championship AND have a ton of things go just right nationally for the loser of that game to sneak in.

Wow, that was the first sweep of the Toms since the 1993-94 season. Way to go Johnnies!
not to nitpick but SJU won both regular season match-ups that season. However, UST won the meeting in the MIAC Playoffs (technically avoiding being swept) and went on the appear in the Final Four in Buffalo, NY.

The last time SJU won all head to head hoops meetings with UST was 1986-87, when they won both regular season meetings (and the two didnt meet in postseason).

Those two seasons and now this year are the only times SJU won both regular season meetings in the past 27 years.

Congrats to SJU for outplaying UST in both games.

All of a sudden, Hamline is in dangerous territory at 8-7. They are only 1/2 game ahead of Bethel for sixth place. They went 1-4 in their toughest stretch of the season (@Aug, @GAC, @UST, @STO, AUG).

They finish with games @SJU, vs CAR, vs BET, @SMU and @MAC. I think they need to go 3-2 to finish 11-9 to make the playoffs.

VOJ

Great win for the Johnnies...but no time to bask...showdown games vs Hamline and @ Bethel the next two...7 teams for 6 spots...

Tommie/Johnnie post mortem--

SJU outplayed UST, utilized it height advantage, and played phenomenal defense. The D had UST looking frazzled. Tommie D was equally stout, but unable to force the 15-or so TOs they depend on to win.

It was a great game and a most excellent atmosphere. I'd put it down as one of the top 10 classic Tommie/Johnnie hoops battles I've seen (and I've seen "a few" of these)

I guess the tie-breaker convo at the top is moot

I would say the Johnnies outplayed and out-coached the Toms last night.  It was a very exciting game to watch.  The atmosphere was great.  Pretty good contingent of Johnnie supporters in attendance.  Most I've seen at St. Thomas in a number of years.

I think many in the crowd were wondering what John Nance had to do to be called for a foul.  It was truly ridiculous.  Nothing was called on him until the last 4 minutes or so of the game when it might have been to the Tom's advantage.

We walked through the new Anderson Student Center.  I think that is what it is called.  Unbelievable.  Feels like you're at the Mall of America.  U$T should have Edina and Wayzata all to themselves now.

Had a short chat with Tommy Hannon, injured St. Thomas senior center.  Bad luck for him having his senior season taken away.  Good kid.  Has a great perspective on the relative importance of his injury.

Good to see Touchdown Tommie, Lbean and a large number of '76-'79 graduates at the game.

Hoping for a playoff rematch.

Hmmmmm...after a season of relative mediocrity, one big win and all the Johnnie posters come out of the woodwork.

I tend to come out of the woodwork after the Tommy game.  Including brutally honest critiques of recent results against the Lords of Summit Avenue.

At least there's some action on the board.

Good win for the Knights last night vs. Macalester. You could tell the Scots really felt like they could complete the season sweep of Carleton, and the Scots really controlled the first half. Second half was a different story--Carleton cleaned up its efforts on the defensive glass (0 offensive rebounds for Mac over final 20 minutes after 9 second-chance points in first half), and knocked down some threes. Mac was switching between man and zone defense, although mostly stayed in this little match-up zone. Carleton finally found the weak spots (middle of lane, corners and baseline) and knocked down some threes. I also got to have some friendly back-and-forth with one of the officials during the game, which has never happened before and I found a bit odd but also amusing.

Knights go for three in a row, hosting Cobbers on Saturday. As for Macalester, I really like the stuff they run, they have a couple of really nice players, especially Peters (sorry, THFL, that kid is top five in the MIAC), but they just have no depth or consistency across their roster.
