Non MIAC basketball question.  Now that the Gophers got close, but ended up losing to both teams, which team does everyone think is stronger - Indiana or Michigan?

I used to think John Beilein coached teams didn't play defense all that well - I might have to change my mind.  ;)

The way Michigan played last night-especially on the defensive end, they looked to me to be the best team in the BIG Ten.  Tubby's guys turned the ball over at crucial times and I'm not sold on Andre Hollins point guard skills against high caliber defender.  He is a very good 2-guard trying to played the point. Yogi at IU and Burke at Michigan ate him up.  Maverick A-looked overmatched as the backup PG.  Goph's have a very nice team. but they have some improving to do in the next six weeks if they expect to go deep in the NCAA tourney.

You didn't watch Michigan vs. Ohio State if you think Michigan's defense is great.  They rely upon the officiating.  If they don't get the charges called when they flop it's a different story.  They're too small to play it straight.

AO,
It's pretty difficult to get calls in the BIG Ten when you are the visitor-flop and all by the Wolverines.  I bleed Maroon and Gold, but I didn't think that officials called a bad game.  That said, I didn't see the Michigan/OSU game, so I will reserve judgement on the Michigan defensive skills.

I'm not saying the refs were terrible.  They were consistent.  Consistently calling the game in a way that benefited Michigan's style of defense.  They would call the charge on Michigan if a gopher flopped, etc..

I was at the game and for the most part they were letting both teams play - definitely favored Michigan because of their style of play. All in all, it was a great game to watch and be at, the Barn was loud! Free throws late in the game and turnovers hurt the Gophers and you can't let a Top 10 team shoot 54.9% in the game and expect to win. Great game to be at.

Cobbers upset Tommies 54-52.    Tommies shoot 39% from field.  Nice win for Concordia.  Tommies still have to go to Gustavus and Carleton-venues were UST has struggled in the past.  Hopefully,   this will make the last half of the year a little bit more interesting and get the board going.

The Cobbers take down the Tommies up in Moorhead tonight 54-52. Judging by the low scoring affair, I would presume that Concordia established the tempo early and ratcheted up the defense to upset the mighty Tommies. Great win for the Cobbers, and a good win for the MIAC, as I'm sure a few coaches grinned from ear to ear after hearing that beating St. Thomas is indeed not insurmountable.

Knights fall to the Johnnies up in Collegeville, 73-66. St. Johns now with 4 wins in a row after a 2-6 MIAC start, and they are right back in the hunt.

Great win by the Cobbers! Good inside game by the Cobbs' Jason Huus. After watching the Bethel -CORD game last week I would have never predicted this win by the Cobbs.  Although it should be noted that UST starter Noah Kaiser missed his 2nd consecutive game (?) and for some reason PG Eric Tengwall did not start. Mose – do you have any insight to share on these developments?

To my surprise, Augsburg was able to sweep the season series with Bethel as they won another nail biter, 69-65. Augsburg's Dan Kornbaum & Bethel's Taylor Hall both finished with 27 points.

Under the cover of the darkness and bitter cold temperatures, the Oles snuck into St. Peter and stole a 70-66 win from the Gusties. ;) Wow!

And it appears that the call for the priest to administer last rites for the Johnnies' 2012-2013 basketball season was premature. :D  The Johnnies defeated Carleton 73-66 and are now on a 4 game win streak.  SJU has crawled back into the playoff picture with a 6-6 record which is good for 7th place and one game behind Bethel. Plus with last night's win, Coach Jim Smith notched his 750th career win.

These games bode well for the rest of the conference race this season.

Drake,

I talked to Tauer last week and Noah Kaiser is hurt right now. Not sure when he'll be back. I didn't see any of Monday's game but it's hard for UST to play the frenetic, full-court press style they want to when you don't make shots. You're not going to win on the road when you shoot 37 percent from the field (28 percent from 3). The alarming stat for me in the box score is that for a team that thrives off sharing the ball, 9 assists on 19 made field goals won't get it done.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be St. Mary's tonight. They head to St. Paul already having had St. Thomas score 101 on them this year. Coming off a loss, I expect UST to come out fast and play hungry.

SUMMIT!!!!!

first off....belated congrats to the legendary Jim Smith on his 750th career coaching win. Not bad for 49 years! Looks like his Jays are salvaging a season most- including the MIAC coaches- had written off before it started.

Tengwall twisted an ankle vs Mac last Wednesday. Not sure if this was a factor in his not starting vs Concordia but it didnt seem to be aa factor when he did play.

To those of you wondering what I was smoking when I said there were 5 games UST could possibly lose and @ Cord was one of them... I wish I had a snappy comeback but the best I can do is "Told ya so". I'm willing to bet UST will lose of of the following road games- Carleton, Augsburg, GAC or SJU.... but no more than one.

As TH4L said, I dont want to be SMU tonight. Hopefully the abysmal play on Monday night will remind UST that you gotta play hard ALL 40 minutes of EVERY game.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Scotty Theisen posts a triple double last Knight - 22 pts, 12 rbs, 10 asts. First recorded trip-dubb in Carleton hoops history!

Congrats to Scott. He has to be a front runner for MVP right now:

4th in the MIAC in scoring
5th in the MIAC in rebounds
1st in the MIAC in assists
12th in the MIAC in steals

Not to mention, the kid brings the ball up the court, plays the wing, bangs in the post, shoots the three, throws behind the back passes and records more deflections on defense than anybody in the league!

SCOTTY T. 4 MVP!!!

Glad to know I'm not the only who has noticed the season Mr Theisen is having.  Last week I selected him as mid-year MVP.  I watched a portion of the nicely produced webcast last night & if I'm not mistaken, in one sequence Theisen grabbed a defensive board, got the ball out on the break, & threaded a sweet no-look behind the back pass to a streaking Shane McSparron for a basket on the other end. Hot damn!

What's wrong with Gustavus?!? Getting thumped by Bethel?  Yet a week ago the Gusties took Carleton out behind the woodshed & thumped the Carlies 74-54.

It could be a very dangerous minefield the Tommies or anyone else will have to tiptoe through to win the conference and playoff title.

ROR – I didn't see anything in your photo.  :P ;D

Greg -has anyone ever tracked how many times The Belt TM  has changed hands within a conference in one season? Carleton would now be the third MIAC team to have possession of this prized championship memento.
