Kind of crazy to have mid-season transfer and even more bizarre that he will be eligible to play immediately.

That is quite strange.  Sounds like a good pickup for SJU.

I assume it is because he is going from D2 to D3 that he is able to play right away?

Can anyone provide insight to the rules?

Jim Smith is currently in his 50th year as St. John's head basketball coach. Apparently, he is the only coach in the program's history. Hard to believe the Johnnies played no basketball before Smith's advent (or have I missed something?)

they had 17 coaches before smith. he arrived in 1964, they played hoops (badly) long before him. Never won a MIAC title till he led them to one in 68-69... yeah you missed something  :)

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

In Warren's defense, it sounds like most of what he missed was well worth missing! ;D

I totally agree...pre-Smith, SJU was under .400 winning percent

I seem to have misinterpreted a paragraph in "Around the Midwest/West" column in D3hoops.com: "Now half a century later, the [St. John's] basketball program hasn't known another coach beside Smith."

Sometimes the brain "sees" what the eyes shouldn't see ... or is it the other way around?  ???

true....not your fault the d3 writer wrote a poorly constructed, confusing sentence that bordered on misleading. I think he was attempting to say that in the past 50 years there has not been another coach ay SJU other than Smith

Thanks, 'miacmaniac.' Had my brain and eyes been fully interlocked, I'd not have made that misperception.

Happy Holidays & almost New Year everyone!

Out west in sunny (warm) southern California, the Hamline Pipers exploded for a 104-99 OT win over Otterbein in the Cal Lutheran Holiday tourney. Dior Ford led the way with a career high 38 pts, 10 rebs, & 5 assists.  Zach Moll had 21 pts on the back of 6-10 3FGA & 3-3 from the FT line, & Austin Johnson had 20 pts & 10 rebs. Good job fellas!

Pipes will take on Cal Lutheran in the championship game tonight.

Nothing wrong with that sentence.

Yep, you've got it right. Whoa, SJU's frontcourt is getting big and talented, fast.

I just noticed how tall Macalester's freshman class is. Has anyone seen them play? Is there some talent there? It's a truly big class for a D3 team.

The only MAC FY post player getting significant tick is Palmer's All Freshman Name Team Selection – Kareem Ismail.  At 6-7 230 lbs I thought he might be the 2nd coming of Tommy Conboy Jr., but so far, he hasn't shown that consistency yet.  However, he did knock some heads against the Cobbs before the winter holiday break & earned the MIAC Player of the Week award.  The only other MAC FY I'm aware of getting significant PT is on the other end of the height spectrum, 5-9 PG Sager "Sensei" Moritsky.

I'm looking forward to my first live MIAC conference game this weekend.  The Tommies will be tough as usual, although probably not as stony as in recent seasons.  I was about ready to declare the Gusties as the new contenders to the throne, but they laid an egg the other night at home against UW-Lax.  It will be interesting to see how the new-look Johnnies shape up with their recent D1 & D2 transfers, plus the return to health of Mitch Kuck & Seth Marx. They certainly have the talent to overtake UST, but their season has been a mixed bag thus far.  Oles & Dawgs will be right in the mix someplace, & I'm thinking the Pipes & Cobbs will be knocking on the playoff door too.   Might as well toss in the surprising Bethel Royals.

Can hardly wait for games to begin, but if this cold snap continues, I might have to do webcast central with my new Christmas computer & iPad.  ;)
