QuoteI agree that Zach Johnson from Carleton has positioned himself nicely to win the freshmen of the year award.

How exactly does one position himself for an award that does not exist?  I think it is good that the league stresses the all-freshman TEAM as opposed to a Rookie of the Year.

The game tonight at SJU resembled a track meet for the first half. Johnnies ride the back of Tyler Westman with his 27. Though game for the Johnnies but solid defense and scoring lead to a win.

60-58 Scots leading in OT.  Check out the video webcast on the MAC site.  Cool Stuff!

Lars plays good against SMU at home.  In his freshman year he had a big steal and knocked down a trey to put Mac up by 3 and winning the game for Mac.

I'm sure OAS and KA remember that right?

I don't want to remember that,  Who thought BVT would give up the ball on a play like that.  By the way do you remember who won that year at SMU??

It was assisted by BVT.

Yeah, I know SMU beat Mac when they played at Winona that year.

UST/GAC -UST blows out GAC again 76-58. The Tomcats played from the 10 minute mark to about the 4 minute mark in the second half without Ike, Keating, or Shimek who all had 4 fouls.  Lucky for UST they have, the Alaskan Assassin, Nasty Nate Worrell who chipped in several key rebounds - a nice putback - and stiffling D.  Not an overwhelming performace but the lackluster Gusties never cut it closer than 10 points.  A helpful note to Phil Sowden: Call out screens.  Maybe if he adhered to this his amigo Olsen wouldn't have limped off the court with a turned (possibly worse) ankle during a crucial part of the game.

Also, Weaver played some gnarly defense and logged 30 minutes tonight.  He locked up Tebrake for the bulk of the game.  I say bulk because 7 of Tebrakes 19 came in the first 5 minutes on Keating, and then he also got a meaningless 3 in the vicinity of Vlatkovich in the last 5 seconds.

Henrichs puts up 16 points and 19 boards, C. Schafer had 17 and 13 and Westman had 27 points on 12-20 shooting from the field. Overall just a great game for SJU. A new look too, Leiser switched over and played the 2 guard most of the night and Ohme ran the point. Old Jim Smith trying to mix things up a bit i guess.

Johnnies limited their TO's to just 12 tonight which compares to their loss last week at CAR when they had 18. Still not a huge improvement but TO's lead to points for the other team as we all know and the Johnnies held on to the ball tonight.

Mig summed it up, but the Tommies get a nice win over Gustavus tonight at Schoenecker. UST shot lights out early to get out to a lead they would never give up. When Schnettler, Ike and Sweeney are all hitting, good luck stopping them.

I've been giving TeBrake some heat on here this season, and he finally played a game that I knew his was capable of. It was nice to see him being aggressive on offense again. He did make some crazy shots, but he had the fire back in his eye that had been missing for quite a while. On the other hand, Gustavus didn't run a very efficient offense tonight. I'm used to seeing them set solid screens and move the ball around to create an open look after a 25-30 second possession, and tonight it was like give the ball to TeBrake or a guard and get out of the way. It seemed more like five guys playing 1-on-1 at times, which isn't Gustie basketball. Olson was the only motivated player in the first game of this series this year, and he was a non-factor before getting leveled on a clean Shimek screen and leaving the game with an injured ankle. Wittwer is a nice player that can play inside and out, he had 15 along with TeBrake's 19.

Let me grab my key and re-start the Ike for MVP bandwagon. That guy was unstoppable tonight. He goes for 16 and 8, not the most impressive numbers, but foul trouble put him on the bench in the second half. The officiating was horribly inconsistent with fouls to the Gusties favor. Highlight of the night goes to Rosefelt. He got an absolutely huge dunk in Sowden's face that will look good hanging on my apartment wall. I would like to buy that poster from the UST bookstore, it's on sale next week. The GAC posts were a non-factor in this one. Ike and Shimek took control down low and Gustavus was hesitant to go inside all night, especially after Ike swatted a few away.

Nate Worrell gave UST some huge minutes, and as Mig said, Weaver played a solid game and is probably playing his best basketball right now. He made a couple of great passes in the second half that got Sweeney wide open for treys. It's a ways away, but I can't wait for the CAR/UST rematch. With Forkrud putting up 22 and 10 tonight in a big Carleton win over the Auggies, the conference MVP is a two-man race.

I don't know how the Knights beat UST, much less by 30+. They are amazingly hard to guard, though I suppose everyone on Carleton is versatile enough to switch all around. Gustavus is not.

That said, Gustavus played MUCH better tonight. Tebrake was lighting up Keating, at least until he had to switch onto Schnettler (which also coincided with Weaver guarding AT) - holding him to a single tough 3 in the second half in a display of defense no one knew he had. However, it killed his legs and he looked dead tired after the half. Wittwer and Stein effectively scored on Ike et al in the post (25 points, 10-15 FG combined), but no one else was any type of threat (Sidenote: Ike is very tough offensively now, but he's still a wreck on defense - blocked shots aren't everything.) Tebrake is good, but he needs more help than that. Hollerich, in particular, needs to pick up his play.

GAC went inside early and often in the second half and the Tommies were hacking fiends. As mentioned, the Tommies played a huge stretch without its frontline. GAC cut it from about 14 to 10 and had 2-3 possessions to cut it further. They had good shots, but never did. A Sweeney 3 over Robbie Schmidt sealed the win with about 3 minutes left.

Strange ending to the first half...after the Tommies went on a run, pushing the lead from six to 15, Olson took a bonehead 1-on-3 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, followed up by Ike getting an equally bonehead reach-in foul with 1 second on the clock 85 feet from the GAC basket. Fritz sat him down and was visibly upset by the decision of the MVP, but the lead was still 14 at half.

Early prognosis on Olson is torn cartilage in his knee. That's one of the few injuries I haven't had, so I have no idea what the recovery timetable might be if that's what it turns out to be. I didn't see the play that caused the injury, but the Tommies seem to be on the pre-emptive defensive about it - did anyone else see it?

That's five solid paragraphs for you, OAS :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I am not sure but i believe torn cartilage is at least 2 months. I had a buddy in High school that tore his and he was out 2 months.

I thought Wittwer, TeBrake and Stein played their butts off tonight. Unfortunately for gustavus they need 5 players to play very well in order to have a chance to beat St. Thomas. Sowden and Olson didn't play well enough and Hollerich is worthless.

Hollerich, Sivesind and DesLauriers combined for 43 minutes, 2 points, 1-3FG, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 turnovers. The Gusties might as well have had a statue out there instead of those three. DO SOMETHING WHEN YOURE IN THE GAME!

How many are on this all-freshman team? Is it anything like All-MIAC in football? In that case the all-freshman team would have about 12 first-teamers.
