Since when is a coach allowed to put two hands onto the back of an official?

Anytime a player suddenly stops showing up in box scores around this time of the year, I worry that they are no longer on the team. With the changeover in semesters, this would be a time to lose someone to grades, financials, other. Hopefully that's not the case with Anthony - he has the makings of a very talented player for the Cardinals

To follow up and provide context to my question. I was watching the Aug/SJU game (once they finally got the live stream going) from the comfort of my den. Midway through the first half the Augsburg coach was clearly not pleased w/ a call or two. There was a break in play in front of the Auggie bench. One of the officials was standing a foot or two in front of him with his back to the coach. The coach, presumably to gain the attention of the official, put his hand on the shoulder of the official (one hand not two). They ended up face to face and during their ensuing discussion and he appeared to touch the official again. I used to ref everything from elementary up to high school basketball and in my day touching an official would be an automatic technical. Maybe something has changed?

Anyway the Johnnies came ready to play today and the Auggies looked like I'm gonna feel on Monday morning when I go back to work after two weeks off.

Tier 1:  Tommies, Johnnies

Tier 2:  Augsburg, Bethel

Tier 3:  St. Olaf, St. Mary's, Carleton

Tier 4:  Mac, Hamline, GAC, Cobbers

I don't really see anyone from tier 4 making the playoffs.  I am bullish on Bethel.  I'm chalking up the loss to Olaf as just a great shooting day by a team that does not generally shoot well.  (One of the freshmen went 4-4 from 3 in that game, and is 2-20 in the remainder of the games.)

I also like Carleton.  They are wafer-thin, but have a talented group of youngsters and I expect them to be a playoff team.  Important game for them tonight at Gustavus.

I've seen that happen plenty of times w/ out a technical.  I believe an official can T someone up for that, but there's also context to take into account.  Some coaches do that when they're trying to engage an official in conversation, and if they're keeping their cool, I don't feel like it has to, as long as the ref feels like it is within the bounds of reasonable behavior.

Happy to see BU with such a solid performance against St. Mary's.  I had expected that to be more of a battle - not sure if it means that BU is better than expected, or if St. Mary's is not as good as they had seemed earlier, or if they were just having an off day.

Injury. Should be back soon.

I think both. I have watched both teams a number of times and my feeling is this was an extreme performance from both teams. Not saying that SMU beat Bethel every time but can't see neither BU or SMY shoot like they did on Saturday. SMU was down 6 with 1:30 and BU went on a bit of a run to be up 14 [I think].

SMU missed too many shots the don't usually miss.

Uncharacteristic and extremely average game for Cave and not Anthony [injury] made it hard to keep up to BU.

What I saw on Saturday, for me, put Bethel in Tier 2. and agree with SMU being in tier 3.

Well, when the windchills creep up, and the January temperatures drop, must be time to heat up some MIAC conference basketball games, and try to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Wednesday night games (# - = current conference standings):

#4 Augsburg (4-2) @ #3 Bethel (5-1). Out of several tough games on tap, could be the game of the night.

#6A SMU (3-3) @ #5 Gustavus (4-3). Changing of the guard, new threat, SMU, vs the fading, annual contender GAC?

#1A UST (6-0) @ #6A St. Olaf (3-3), The surprising OT win over Hamline on Monday might have put the fear of God into the Tommies, or perhaps exposed them?  ;) Oles want to establish their relevancy.

#8 Carleton (2-5) @ #10 Hamline (0-6).  Carlies aren't deep but have got some nice young talent.  The Pipers are better than their record would indicate.

#11 Concordia (0-7) @ #9 Macalester (1-5).  Looks like the Cobbs have already entered their winter of discontent. :(  Mac's Coach Abe W. need to beef up his recruiting class, he's got some decent players.

#1 SJU gets to rest up for the Saturday Smackdown on Summit vs. the Tommies.  Not sure who's going to be doing the smacking though.  If based on momentum, seems like the Jays have it in spades.

MIAC Standings: conference record followed by overall record

#7 SJU:    7-0, 11-1
#5 UST:    7-0, 11-1

AUGS:  5-2, 9-3
BET:  5-2, 8-4

GAC:  5-3, 5-8
SMU:  3-4, 6-6

STO:  3-4, 6-6

CARL:  3-5, 6-7,
MAC:  2-5, 5-7

HAM:  0-7, 2-10
CORD: 0-8, 2-10

Obviously, the game of the week, with some ripple effect on the national scene - the battle of the unbeaten. Two teams both ranked in the D3Hoops Top 25. #7, 7-0 SJU travels down Hwy 94 to Summit Ave in St. Paul to take on #5, 7-0 UST. Should be a great game. Unfortunately, family obligations will prevent me from checking this game out in person. I'd imagine the stands will be packed for this game.

Macalester (2-5) takes on Augsburg (5-2) in Minneapolis.  The Dawgs with a solid win

Carleton (3-5) at STO (3-4).  Another separation game.

Gustavus (5-3) travels to Arden Hills to play Bethel (5-2).  The Gusties seem to have found gold on their bench in the form of seldom used Jr. sharpshooter Kaleb Freahn.  Freahn played in all of two games during the 2018-2019 season and didn't make an appearance this season in a game until the Gusties trip out west over the holidays.  Coming off the bench, Freahn has led or tied the Gusties in scoring in 4 out of five games since December 29 and is averaging 18.2ppg.  Anybody know anything about this kid?

St Marys (3-4)  @ Hamline (0-7). Possible trap game for the Redbirds.

Beleaguered Concordia (0-8) gets a well needed bye to regroup.

Faehn is from Waseca and originally committed to NAIA Briar Cliff out of high school (went by Kaleb Nelson at the time).   Not sure if he ever played there.  Very good scorer,  maybe not so great defensively.   At this point, the offense must be outweighing the defense for the Gusties as he's been very effective for them.
