FWIW, the NCAA announcement has tagged D2 and D3 in it's press release announcing the new attendance policy:

https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/ncaa-president-mark-emmerts-statement-limiting-attendance-ncaa-events

If it's coming from the President of the NCAA, I'm thinking it's a blanket policy that is not subject to exceptions.

Yes -- and it may well turn out that way, but tagging D-II and D-III applies first to the neutral site championships, which the NCAA fully controls. That's the D-III men's basketball Elite Eight, the D-III women's final four, the D-III wrestling championships, etc.

The NCAA last week said it was not recommending to ban fans from sites, yet two sites did anyway. That demonstrates how this dynamic actually works.

If Sexton Arena has to be empty for this one, I say they pack Sal's, the Midi, and the La and pipe the noise into the arena.

Unrealistic? Yep. Probably illegal? Certainly. Would I care? Nope.

I'm counting on an empty arena to help balance out the homecourt advantage (still mad the national committee didn't decide the host on this one with a coin flip too). Without the extra crowd noise, VOJ is going to have to really up the levels of insufferability.

Maybe the Johnnies will think they are playing at Sleepy Schoenecker again and thump the Toms by 17!

or, since the noise level will be like when they played Bethany a year ago, maybe the Johnnies will think the opponent is from the UMAC and get mauled by 23!!

As we've learned previously in this tournament, the schools have more power over this than the NCAA central office does. SJU could conceivably still host people this weekend.

I suspect that decision making authority might be shifting as we speak.

Even though SJU decided to change things (and used the NCAA reasoning which I am not sure if held true here; working to confirm), as Pat indicated the decisions on what is best for on-campus events awarded to schools is usually left in the hands of the institutions. The NCAA doesn't mandate any policies or directives. Though, I am checking...

The SJU athletics website suggests that it's the NCAA mandate banning spectators from the game. Not an infallible source (Johnnies are generally untrustworthy types) but pretty clear messaging about who they felt made the decision.

Yeah ... so earlier when I read the CNU and RMC decisions there didn't seem to be an indication that the NCAA forced it. I have finally heard back from some I had reached out to ... and the CNU and RMC stories have changed. The NCAA did send down the mandate. Not typical so it just makes things so strange.

St Thomas Academy parent tested positive so STA and Vis are shutdown today and tomorrow. No sign that parent was on campus and I didn't see anything about where they might have been exposed.

I heard somewhere (not sure if fact) this individual was at the State Hockey Tournament last weekend. If true, this specifically highlights why the decisions were made about sporting events.

That plus the whole Rudy Gobert mocking coronavirus, touching everything, and then testing positive thing.

We live in interesting times.

4 additional cases in MN today including Dakota county (where I live), Ramsey (where I work - 3rd case in Ramsey), Hennepin, and Stearns county. All adults with travel connections.

Retired Old Rat

I will be surprised if the tournament is not cancelled.
