IF is a daily. And I ask this question? Why? Do they cover Fort Frances news too?

Missota boys, we need to look at the fall schedules and figure out what we need covered for Friday night games.

WW- Time for Corn Capital Days in 100 degree heat!

Hmm, job's not up there any more. Maybe it was an accident or they were just trolling for resumes (hah).

WW,

Had I not been recently promoted to sports editor, I would have considered applying so we could work side by side! JK, I'm perfectly fine here. Glad to hear that you're staying in RW though, that makes life a lot easier. I'll get you a photo Tuesday, but it might be late at night. It's supposed to rain, and I have a Wednesday sports section to put out.

PI,

Northfield football plays at Hutch third game of the season, I think it's Sept. 15. Could use your photography there, too far for me to go and flirt with missing my deadline that night. And WW, Northfield is at RW this year, but I'll probably be at that one so I'll shoot it myself.

From the Slow News Day Department (or making a silk purse from a sow's ear)  ;)

To satisfy my hoops craving, last night after work I ambled over to the Salvation Army on west 7th St. in St. Paul to check out the semi finals of the Howard Pulley Summer Pro-Am league.  Rumor had it that the newest T-Wolf, Mike James might be playing along with fellow wolf, Trent Hassell on one of the teams in semis.  In addition this particular team also had former Gophers John Thomas & Slammin' Sam Jacobsen.  Unfortunately, Thomas & James were no shows, but I did see Hassell up close, Sam gliding around the court (no dunks though), Arriel McDonald, Randy Carter, Aaron Robinson et al.

Now usually this league features a number of former Gophers, various other DI & high level DII players from around the state, & the latest high school phenom -- think Kris Humphries.   The other team in the semis had Jeff Hagen & Mitch Ohnstad from the U, Jeff Halbert (Mike Keating's old nemesis) Ohio U . & Luke Anderson from Mankato State.

On occasion, you might get the D3 regional superstar i.e. Devean George, BVT, & Rich Melzer & others who  have played in the Pulley league in the past.  I've also heard that Tom Conboy from Mac played a game or two last year, & someone told me that Bryan Schnettler from the Tommies was on a team this summer.  However, in most cases the D3 players are bona fide superstars in their own right.  So you can imagine my surprise when I spot this vaguely familiar, lanky, athletic looking kid about 6-5, 6-6, with floppy hair & I thought to myself – "who the heck is this?!?"  "Dang!"  (gulp) "Why, that's, that's," sputter, sputter.... "a Gustie!!"

Yup Trevor Wittwer!  Willy, you & Coach Hanson would have been proud of him-- on the defensive side of the ball.  He was one of only a couple of players who played consistent, serious D.  He accounted for himself quite well (one of the team starters) & defended both Hassell & Jacobsen.  On the other hand, Jacobsen & Hassell did school him a couple of times, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

T-Wubb had a block on Hassell & Arriel McDonald, several steals & boards, a nice left handed putback for a basket, & a contested fast break layup.  I didn't get a chance to see if Wittwer's worked on his offensive game at all since clearly the pecking order on his team was Jeff Hagen, Luke Anderson & Mitch Ohnstad.  Still, I've got to believe this was a great opportunity for Wittwer to play with & against the caliber of competition he faced this summer.  Nicely done!

Could it be Hanson is grooming Wittwer for an Espenson like breakout season this winter???  Developing.  BTW, his team lost something like 85 – 74.

Awesome! :D Now if only I could figure out how to make my body say "you've had your last burrito for a while..."  ??? :D

When I was taking a creative writing class back in college, we had to bring in a sample of bad writing that had actually been published. I used a text book published by a prof at my school. ;D

I love how you stick a random literary reference up on a slow board, I did the same on the CCIW board... some crazy guy wrote an entire book using words that did not contain the letter e!

DHF- thanks for the thought, but I believe our board has officially been placed in the dormant/inactive status for the month of August.  Even moving the figurative mouse doesn't seem to refresh the screen.   ::)

I think someone would have to post a venomous blast at a popular or highly regarded MIAC player or sports figure to raise the collective board pulse.  I might have to try that one next week.  ;)

BTW – I did read your post from several weeks ago about the writer who never used the letter "E" to write a story.  Sheesh!

In the meantime, if I was you I'd be careful over on the Liberty League board.  Their board is usually part of my near daily stroll through the D3 website.  Those LLPP fellas can be highly entertaining, but it gets a little, let's say "coarse" on occasions.

I know what would bring people out of the woodwork... I could poke fun at Minnesota... like say it's inferrior to somewhere that MNs hate, like... Wisconsin... or especially point out that Wisconsin actually has more lakes than Minnesota... :D Uh... just kidding! (looks around nervously)

Yeah, it's a scary place over there on LLPU... I sorta have this long term goal of making it more docile (at least PG-13 instead of R or X rated) but it's going to take some work, to say the least. The CCIW guys were easy in comparison. These guys just scare me sometimes!!!  :D

A little birdie says a certain member of this board was having a good time drinking 44 oz. beers in Kansas City on Friday night. That birdie also thinks that certain member didn't share his queen hotel bed with two other Missouri ladies, like the birdie did.

Hey yo! Oh wait, they puked and puked some more. I guess that's what happens when bar time is 3am. They didnt need the extra hour.

TommieHoops4Life

Those beers were 44 oz.? I knew they were big, but wow. Of all the places for me to run into PI, in downtown KC after the Twins come back to beat the Royals. It was a fantastic weekend, and I'm already planning on making the trip again next summer. By the way PI, I saw you on tv after Mauer's homer in the ninth Friday, and they used you again on Saturday's pre-game show. Congrats, we never got on tv. I guess your face must be prettier than mine.

piperinsider

Actually it was Cuddy's, but we raced home on Saturday as I predicted we would make the pre-game recap. We did. However the girl flashing her boob in the 5th inning didn't. I recorded Thursday's game, guess everything cool happened on Friday.

TommieHoops4Life

Oh yeah, you're right, that was Cuddyer's where you were celebrating. I did see a replay of the young lady revealing her left boob. That was hilarious, but you missed three blondes at the bar the next night taking full advantage of tequila, and themselves. It was quite a sight, possibly the highlight of my weekend down there.

Random trivia – I attended the Gus Macker 3x3 tourney this past Saturday in St. Paul. The Carleton Knights were representing with incoming FY Jeremy Sutherland on one team, & fellow frosh Bryan Rosett on another team with two other Knights, Jay Melson & Rodney Kuhl.  Soph Jay Melson had an interesting choice for a shirt – a Gustie t-shirt with a black Sharpie line drawn through the Gustavus name.  :o

In addition to playing fairly solid ball, Melson & Sutherland both appeared to be holding up their end of the conversations fairly well when they exchanged pleasantries with the occasionally vocal crowds.   Melson sorta has this choirboy look about him so I wonder if he gets away with a lot more lip during organized ball.

Aah yes, the smack talking of street ball.  Good times, good hoops.  ;D :D

localcoach

Hello everyone.  I've been on an extended vacation this summer, and this is the first time I've checked the board in a few weeks.  A few interesting tidbits I see.   :o

I also happened to check some of the team sites today and I found something noteworthy.  According to the Hamline website, assistant coach Dan Perrel has stepped down.   Anyone in the know with regards to this developing story?  I also heard another big rumor about another MIAC assistant coach, but until I can confirm or deny I will leave it be.  (Drake don't get fiesty now  ;)

If a tree falls in a forest...

LC - the way this board has been lately, you & I might as well be posting in a basketball vacuum.  The month of August has been brutal in the way of posts.

It's funny that you of all people point out the article on Perrel at Hamline & not have more detail on his resignation.  Usually those types of articles say the person is leaving for X reason.  However, no reason was given for his resignation & or what his next career move might be.  You know - "spend more time with my family, gone into private business, the career opportunity of a lifetime," etc.

It's also interesting to note his job patterns.  The last 6 years he's spent 2 years at St. Olaf, 2 years at Mac & now 2 years at Hamline.  What's going on with that?  And finally, no parting comments from Barry Wohler?  Hmm.

I'll steal a page out of your book Local & say that I heard a couple of interesting things at the Gus Macker, but I'll wait to see how many players return to Hamline this year.

As far as the possible move of another MIAC assistant coach, I'm getting used to reading these half rumors, so I'll keep waiting until I receive confirmation from someone.  Ahem - the NSIC D2 transfer with the initials D.O.   ::) ;D
