Drake & Local,

I keep checking the board looking for signs of life. Since I have nothing to contribute in the way of hard news, half truths or gossip I will wait for others to post. The FB board is starting to hop again.

Zoo- I usually read the football board, but only post on occasion.  I don't know if I've ever seen Local post on the football board.

By the way, in the great Alex/ Alec debate, one of my roommates in college was from Alexandria.  He also said the natives spelled it "Alex" & called it "Alec".  Go figure.  ;)

O.k. Drake, first of all I thought you would have figured out the NSIC transfer by now.  That would be a young man by the name of David Olson (D.O.) formerly of Chisago Lakes High School, I believe.  He has left MSU-Moorhead and apparently is enrolled at Augsburg.  A very good shooter from what I remember.  ???

As for Dan Perrel, I found that press release quite interesting as well.  Not much offered in the way of an explanation, or where Perrel is off to next.  I guess we will have to wait and see.

The other, as you called it, "half-rumor" of a coaching move, I have since been able to confirm.  Apparently Hamline will be down a second assistant coach this year, as Jeremy Tiers has taken the assistant coaching position up at Bemidji State University.  That's a great move up the ladder for Mr. Tiers and I'm sure he will be a force on the recruiting trail for BSU just like he was for Barry at Hamline.

You wonder why I never figured out D.O. (David Olson) transferred to Augsburg from MSU-Moorhead?  Here's why -- he wasn't on the flipping roster last year!!!  ::) ::)

Alright now the praise part -

WOW, MiBAAD Local!!!  Too bad it's not hoops season, this is HUGE news!  If this is true (yet to be confirmed on the Hamline site), this could be a serious blow to the fledgling basketball program.  Losing your top coaches within days of each other - dang! :o :o

In a sense, this is a move up for Tiers.  Bemidji State is a DII school, but its not been the most stable coaching situation the past couple of years.  Anyway, if my memory is correct,  Tiers is from Canada & this at least moves him closer to the mother country.

What I was hearing at the Gus was that Captain Barry "Bligh" Wohler was running players off the team with his coaching style.  I didn't realize he was running off coaches as well.  So mebbe the mutiny involved not only the crew but the ship's officers too, ehh?

What you gotta say about this PI?   Interesting -- I think we all will look forward to seeing this year's edition of the Pipers.

I really never understood how Perrel and Wohler could coach the same team. Dan is so quiet, and Barry is just so loud. Wherever Dan goes, I wish him well. I had the opportunity to meet him when he was coaching the Scots and he's a great guy. At the time, he was living in New Germany, maybe the gas prices drove him to leave? :P

About Barry's style of coaching. Obviously I'm not at practices so I don't see what goes on when the clock isn't running, but I think there is some people that can play for Barry, and some that can't. Hopefully the kids that come to Hamline understand what they are getting themselves into. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of last year's freshmen that didn't play much to not return, especially since they didn't graduate much. We'll see how it pans out.

Should be interesting to see who is hired to help coach.

Here is a link to a story about the new head coach at BSU.

http://info.bemidjistate.edu/Sports/sports/mhoops/news/2004-05/20041126ac.html

It has been a revolving door at Bemidji for coaches as well as players.

The situation at MSUM is almost as bad as BSU. Both programs, IMHO, are struggling to recruit local talent!

Sometimes schools take guys off the roster if they leave the team. The fact that he's not on the roster listing on the Web site today doesn't mean he wasn't at some point.

Pat - I appreciate your mediation (I think), ??? & I know schools' make changes to their rosters & sometimes during mid-season.  However,  Local brought this topic up several months ago.   If the kid's name wasn't on the roster two months ago, nor the other day, how was I supposed to know or guess who he was?!?  Here was Local's previous post & my reply.

Oh, and you were wondering about the initials for the Divison II guard who supposedly is transferring to Augsburg. That would be "DO." Let's see if you can figure it out.

So are you changing the school criteria on me now?  Instead of saying Northern Sun (NSIC) possible transfer, you've expanded on your earlier statement to say "D2" transfer"?!?

You should know my posting persona well enough by now to know that I would follow up on your lead.   Well, I looked at all 10 NSIC member schools' websites & did not find a single player with the initials D.O.  In fact, out of 100+ players I think I only saw two last names that even began with the letter "O".  So unless, I've totally gapped it out & missed it, I didn't see the player's name you were referring to.

Unless of course he sat out last year/redshirted & wasn't on the active roster, or was injured.   But usually, if a player redshirts, they'll list his name on the roster anyway & note "redshirt".  So time for sum more 'splaining Local.

Drake you seem a little testy my friend.  :D  All I can tell you is that David Olson either played or was red-shirted at MSU-Moorhead last year.  I want to say that it's the latter.

Further confirmation of Jeremy Tiers' coaching move was in Charley Walters column in the Pioneer Press today.  I agree with you that the move is a promotion for Tiers.  I've met him a handful of times and always come away with a strong impression.  I don't know too many other coaches who word as hard as he does, particularly when it comes to recruiting.  I think he will do some good things at Bemidji State.

piperinsider, out of curiousity which players have you heard might leave the Hamline program?  While Barry will have a hard time replacing coaches Perrel and Tiers, I'm sure that he will continue to make big strides with the Piper program.  What would make you think differently  ???

piperinsider

I don't think differently. I think the Pipers have a shot at finishing top three. I think finding assistants might prove to be tougher than expected especially with two weeks until school starts.

Haven't heard any specific names, but when you graduate just a few players and you bring in another class of kids, there is only so many minutes in a game.

Drake Palmer

No – I'm not being testy Local.  I believe Pat was trying to tell me why a player's name might not appear on a roster at any given time.  I in turn was simply pointing out to Pat that I was already aware of those reasons.  As proof I simply quoted my post from June, highlighted several of those reasons that I previously listed, & to which you never responded.

On the other hand, you had an opportunity to set the record straight in June & you didn't.  You had a similar opportunity to set the record straight several days ago & you didn't at that time either.  You only chose to say that the player was David Olson, & then feign surprise that I hadn't guessed his name. Well I wonder why??

Two months after the fact, you haltingly disclose the kid might have red shirted last season.  Why didn't you say something back in June when I first brought it up?? (mebbe because you didn't know?)  FWIW - I did some further checking & Olson's name doesn't appear in any of the Moorhead stats for the 05-06 season either.

LC: "Oh, thanks for clearing this up."

DP:  "No prob, Bob, you're more than welcome.  I'm glad to set the record straight for you."    ::) ;D :D

Maybe Wohler will promote Kip Sparby & Drew Carlson from graduate assistant coaches to fulltime assistants.  I still think the Hamline coaching transition is going to cause some difficulties with the Pipes this season.  Bear in mind, we're still talking about a club that had an overall record last year that was less than .500.  It isn't like we're discussing a perennial powerhouse such as the Gusties, Tommies etc.

"If anything here offends, I beg your pardon. I come in peace, I depart in gratitude." ;)

localcoach

As you well know Drake I haven't been around very much this summer.  As for some final closure on David Olson, all I can tell you is that he was a part of the MSU-Moorhead team last season whether his name shows up in the statistics or not.  Maybe you can ask him yourself this season when you catch the Auggies in action.  ;)

On to other topics that are up for discussion.  Coach Wohler won't be promoting Kip Sparby as I've heard that Sparby is going to be helping out Coach Trewick down at St. Mary's this season.  Not sure what Drew Carlson is up to?

I also see that the S.I.D. at Bemidji State has posted an article on the hiring of Jeremy Tiers.  In the article it talks about Tiers' "recruiting prowess" at Hamline.  Here's the link.

Anybody members of MinnesotaPreps.com? Saw they had pictures from an gym session at Hamline. Wondering why they were there and who they saw? They had one picture available for free and it was that Zev kid that was a frosh last year.
