Alright, first Funbballer & now you Willy.  What in the name of Duane Syverson & Cobber basketball is prompting the two of you to pick the Cobbs to make the playoffs this season?!?  You been mixing a little bit of that Red River water with some of your favorite drinks, or did Sofa clue you in on a monster new recruit?  I like the Cobbs as much, if not more than most posters on this board & I certainly don't have very high hopes for this upcoming season.

Anybody have info on upcoming scrimmages that might be taking place this weekend?

Drake: I believe the Johnnies are playing Concordia-St Paul on Saturday. I don't know if it is open to the public or not. I guess this will be a good test for the Johnnies seeing as how they Bears clobbered the Johnnies by about 40 at the SCSU holiday tourney last year!!  :-\

You need credentials to suddenly get into a d-2 vs. d-3 scrimmage? I'm sure if you just walked in, you'd have no trouble watching it. The Knights were forced to work out at Northfield High School Tuesday night (Carleton vball hosted the Bennies in the MIAC playoffs), and not much to report. I couldn't stay to watch them work out, but it looks like Kalland likes what he has to work with after the loss of Forkrud. It's up to Johnson, Drake and Phillips to step it up and get the Knights to the playoffs this year.

That's the only MIAC stuff I have. I'll be in Rochester watching #1 Owatonna vs. #4 Northfield in volleyball Wednesday, only to follow it up with Northfield vs. Faribault football for a state tournament berth Friday! Fall playoffs are a crazy time.

More grist for the Mill .. I came across this on the CCIW board today.  I think D3 Hoops will be coming out with their preseason - Top 25 poll later on today or tomorrow.   I've said this before & I'll say it again, I still think UST is ranked too high right now.  And, as far as rankings are concerned I also think North Central from the CCIW - 4th is ranked too high as well.  Both teams lost key point guards & wings that made their respective teams run.   I would think a ranking in the low teens would probably be a more accurate ranking for both teams.

I also see UW-LaCrosse is lurking down at 12th in the rankings & they get to play at UST in December.  I think that Werner kid was one post player that physically dominated Rosefelt last year, as his squad beat the Tommies at home in December.  FWIW, I spoke with a couple of Tommie players & observers & they felt the LaCrosse team was a physically tougher team than the vaunted trio of post players from North Central.

Quote[This will be my 8th season as one of Pat's Top 25 voters.  I think I am one of 2 or 3 that's been with him from the beginning of the poll.

The preseason ballot is extremely difficult.  I know we all put a lot of work into every week's ballot, but trying to gauge things at this stage is just really tough.

My ballot, as submitted last night, is:

1 Virginia Wesleyan
2 Wooster
3 Mississippi College
4 North Central
5 Baldwin-Wallace
6 St. Thomas
7 William Paterson
8 UW-Oshkosh
9 Calvin
10 Christopher Newport
11 Maryville (Tenn.)
12 UW-La Crosse
13 Carroll
14 Lawrence
15 UW-Whitewater
16 Augustana
17 Occidental
18 Hampden-Sydney
19 Hope
20 Wittenberg
21 Lincoln
22 Ohio Northern
23 Washington U.
24 Tufts
25 Randolph-Macon

UST may be ranked a little to high but we shouldn't forget that man in the middle and the fact that they have the best shooter in the league. Plus Keating has the potential to be amazing. I think all they need is two guys to step in and not suck and they will be fine.

The SMU 06-07 roster was posted on Monday.  No major surprises other than the fact the Birds don't seem to have any luck or put much effort into recruiting any Minnie players. SMU - the exurb of the Land of Lincoln.

Gasp, sputter spit, etc.   So Willy, I see you've been playing the part of the coy cat in the hat not just for Halloween.  ;)  It seems you've been sitting on a bit of news & the Gusties have decided to join the arms race for big post players eh?   ;D :o  (Gusties' roster is up & they seem to have re-gained a player who changed his mind & decided that DI ball wasn't all that it's cracked up to be.)  How's he looking?

At this rate I'm guessing Sofa sent over Adam Morrison's younger brother to attend Concordia, thus your renewed optimism around the Cobbs' program.

Also, the official D3 Hoops Top 25 poll is now out & UST checks in at #9.  That's more like it, though I still think it's a bit too high, & North Central dropped to #19.  This poll must be based on past performance, but  Buena Vista in the IIAC & our own Gusties are in the Others Receiving Votes Category. WT... :o

The Gusties are recieving votes over the Johnnies in the polls? Weird..... ;D

Chica yea false identification

Tommies in at 9th eh?  Thats kind of a shocker for me considering the fact they lost the heart and soul of their team in sweeney.  Something that will hurt the tommies this year is that i don' think they have as much depth.  Don't get me wrong they may not need much, but its always something nice to have.

That pesky Augsburg team could hurt the Tommies this year....again!! ;D

Tommies don't have as much depth? Fritz never plays more than 7-8 guys anyway...they'll be just fine.

Willy Wonka

Drake - What? Who would that be?  8)

TH4L - Depending on the venue, not all scrimmages are open. When Mankato State played GAC in the past, it was open at Gus Young but VERY closed at MSU. I believe the Mavs ended this arrangement after we played them basically even without two starters (the year after we went to the title game and the year they won the conf. title).

I'm not sure why they'd schedule a game with Carleton (a few years back) and refuse such an arrangement with GAC, but that's their own decision I suppose.

Keating for All-American!  ::)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

UST_LBOW

My predictions

1)UST will win the league. That's what is going to happen.  Schnettler and Ike are hoopers and Keating is the best all-around player in the league. He makes everyone that much better.

2)I think SJU will be good although Heinrich was more important to them than most people think.  Coach Smith held him back too much and I think he could have done more if allowed.

3) Hamline, they play hard nosed and they got a good group of young players.  I'm not sure if they have the leadership and focus to play at a high level the whole year, but if they do, they will be close to the top of the league.

4)Carleton will be solid, Phillips is good. Size in the frontcourt may be an issue.

5) Bethel, Meadowcraft can flat out score and wants the ball. Strom dunks nasty and makes them a team with a chip on their shoulder.  Laugen is going to be good in this league and I think he will make a splash this year.

6) Gustavus ~ Sowden is a crafty dude with a lot of experience and he will lead them into the playoffs.

From what I hear about the Cobbs:  team looks good, a scrimmage vs NDSU earlier this week went "well" (quote from Sofa King), and expectations are high.

Now what does all this mean?  I have no idea, but that is what I hear.  Should be an interesting season

RB George Rogers, about the upcoming season:
"I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first."

BETHEL34

My predictions

1.) UST - Obviously the team to beat.  The loss of Shimek I believe people are looking over, he was a huge part of their success the last couple of years.  But Schnettler, Ike, and Keating are going to be a tough 3 headed monster to beat and those three will lead these guys to another MIAC Championship.

2.)St. Johns - Ohme should have a great year leading this team.  Over all I think the most balanced team in the MIAC.  Strong players at every position...don't see a real weakness for these guys.

3.)Bethel - People are saying they lost a lot...I don't see that.  Losing Fredrickson coming off the bench for 14 pts is tough to replace, but this just leaves more minutes for Tim Madson who will have a great year.  He will ave 12-15 pts and push for an All Conference honor.  Then you have Meadowcroft going for 17-20 a game and d1 transfer Moberg scoring double digits inside.  I believe Bethel has their own 3 headed monster that is going to be very tough to beat this year.  Then they are deep with Laugen and Wade at the pg position and Steve Strom who will be one of the best defenders in the league this year.  They will give SJU and St. Thomas a run for their money this year.

4.) Hamline - Derock and company will be very tough.  They will be a very tough defensive team and they arguably have the best all around guard play in the miac.  But they will have off nights where teams with strong and talented big men will destroy them down low.

5.)Carleton - Also arguably the best all around guard play in the miac, but the loss of Forkrud is way too much for this team to overcome.  They are too weak inside, and teams like STU, SJU, and BU with solid inside games will just pound them inside and they will lose games when they are not shooting well.

6.)GAC - To good of coaching to ever miss the playoffs.  Hanson knows how to get the best out of his players, and their defense will always be solid.  And Sowden will step it up and get these guys into the playoffs.

The Cobbs scrimmaged NDSU...that had to have been as as* beating. CON doesn't have any guys over 6'6'' do they and I know NDSU has at least one 6'10''. But height isn't everything. Good to hear an update from Moorhead.

if it went "well" that must mean winkleman only had 3 dunks 22pts and woodside only had 14pts 10ast

shimek will be missed by UST...Ike finally started showing me some of the toughness i would like to see out of a player of his caliber during the playoffs last year...im looking forward to the CAR UST matchup to see if the steal string bean tommy drake can push him around like he has done in the past

ohme will be a great leader for SJU this year and he will play mind games with many players in the league "TOES!!"

CAR is gaurd heavy this year and i would expect them to be very uptempo like HAM has been the past couple years....HAM will be solid

IM TRYING TO FIND ANOTHER WHEEL FOR MY ROLLER SKATES!!! i almost had a major wipe out with a beer in hand at the MIAC championship game last year...

CLOSING IN ON 519!!! PUT YOUR SOMBREROS ON AND LETS SALSA BABY!! GIVE ME A PORTER HOUSE AND LETS BUMP IT UP A NOTCH!! AND WATCH OUT FOR LEW FORD JUMPING OUT OF THE BUSHES TO SCARE YOU WHEN YOU WALK DOWN THE STREET!!!
