Are you Serious ?!?!? Question of the Day

Why would I pay when I can eventually read most of it on line? Or they can do like Hamline does at games - the only way you can get a roster is buy a stinking media guide for 2.00 or 5.00.  Sheesh!

Five Dollars?!?

Been waiting for BET and CORD to post there rosters as well.

CORD looking good in a scrimmage with the Bison has to be one of those relative things. I can't imagine the "ears" having the firepower to stay with Woodside & Co. They are looking for big things from that crew in Bisonville this year!

Well the bison did beat the dirty badgers last year so they will need a pretty impressive win this year or a 20 win season to top that in my mind. Woodside is pretty sick though. I can't imagine a Cobber trying to guard him or anyone in this league for that matter.

SUM- the Oles have their roster posted on their site,  it's the Media guide I was squawking about.  ;D http://www.stolaf.edu/athletics/basketball/men/roster/index.html

You're right -  the Royals, Cobbs & Tommies have yet to post their rosters.
You're also right about the Bison. They could give the Gophs more than a handful next week.  Woodside, Winkleman & Smith are very nice players.

Sum - you're close to the Valley, have you heard any rumblings coming out of Cobberville or the Foolem regarding their team this year?   No one else (Funbb & Wonka) want to say anything other than they expect the Cobbs will make the playoffs this year.

Nothing so far. Still looking at H.S. FB and VB stuff in the Foolem. Bison ladies did get beat by the MSUM women last night in an exhibition game!!!

The move to D-l has not been good for Amy Ruley's program!

The only decent college womens programs lie in Grand Forks, ND and St. Joseph, MN........not Fargo, ND..... ;D

Tommies in at 9th eh?  Thats kind of a shocker for me considering the fact they lost the heart and soul of their team in sweeney.  Something that will hurt the tommies this year is that i don' think they have as much depth.  Don't get me wrong they may not need much, but its always something nice to have.

That pesky Augsburg team could hurt the Tommies this year....again!! ;D

WM-- I must be having trouble with my memory....help me out, OK?

what happened to the team that played UST the game after they lost to Augs?

Because I have consumed one to many hamms tonight I really can't remember what happened to the team after the Tommies loss to mighty Auggie Tech.  ;D

The milestone is just one of many in my life. Hopefully one of many to come. +K all around.

From Matt Ten Haken:

2006-07 MIAC Winter Preseason Coach's Polls Announced
<http://www.miac-online.org/news214.html>http://www.miac-online.org/news214.html
November 3, 2006

St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced today its 2006-07 Winter Preseason Coach's Polls for men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's hockey. The preseason favorites include St. Thomas - Men's Basketball, Concordia - Women's Basketball, St. Thomas - Men's Hockey, and Gustavus - Women's Hockey.

Well PI - I see you just beat me to the punch.  I was getting ready to post the same myself.   ;)

Anyways, here's the rest of my post...

Still no rosters from Bethel, Cobbs & Tommies but the MIAC website posted the
Coaches poll yesterday.

2006-2007 MIAC Coaches' Preseason Basketball Poll...

No major surprises in the top 6 teams selected, although there seems to be a deferential tip of the cap to Coach Hanson for what he has done in the past with the Gusties.

The same line of thinking must have taken place with regard to Coach Siverson & the Cobbs for them to merit a 7th place pick.  In their defense though, they recruited a solid group of players (8+) from their class of 04, but they have yet to find the 3rd player to complement Luke Linz & Brock Citterman.  Talent wise, I think the St. Olaf has better overall talent than the Cobbs, so I'm surprised to see the coaches slotted them for the 8th spot.

Overall, I think the league is going to be very competitive this year & other than the top two spots, the race for the playoffs is going to be extremely tight.  Even the cellar dwellers, whoever they might be, are going to rise up & put the hurt on someone a time or two this season.

Watched a little bit of the Johnnies scrimmage today vs. Concordia St. Paul. For being beat by this same team a year ago by 40 the Johnnies played well today. The start of the game featured 5 straight shots by the Schafer twins followed there after by what seemed like a never ending three point shooting contest. Both teams shot well from the outside but the Johnnies seemed to be getting their looks not through the offense but from scrambling around. The two teams spilt the opening 20 minute sessions followed by a significant victory for the Concordia third team over the Johnnies third team.

This scrimmage showed me that the Johnnies DO have the quickness to defend anyone. Matt Ohme was pretty impressive with his passing as well as his shooting. I think he has finally settled into his role as the teams PG.

As for the inside. Craig Schafer made several tough baskets inside while his brother Scott hit a couple outside jumpers. They both looked pretty good in there on defense. I know the MIACmanic will love this....The Twin Towers are back in business!!!

I'm performing my self-appointed responsibilities of keeping the board live until the season kicks in...

Some of you posters might know Dave Wright, or at least know his voice as he is a longstanding public address announcer for the Tommies at their basketball, football & hockey games.  (I just know of him & his voice) In addition, he's been the PA guy at a number of high school events as well as the St. Paul Saints etc.  Several weeks ago he was awarded the Mike Augustin sportswriters award for the work he's done for the MIAC.  Mose can give you more detail on him if you care to know.

Anyway, Wright also happens to write a biweekly column for one of the neighborhood papers in St. Paul.  In his most recent column, he was commemorating the passing of his predecessor, another longtime UST sports & basketball PA announcer, John Pates who passed away last week at the mellow age of 92.  Apparently Mr. Pates carried himself in a very dignified and thoughtful way, but had as Wright described a "puckish sense of humor."  One of the basketball stories he recounts in his column about John Pates I thought some of you might find humorous:

Then there was the basketball game at O'Shaughnessy where Concordia-Moorhead coach Sonny Gulsvig became enraged at a referee following a questionable call. Gulsvig took his wallet out of his back pants pocket and slammed it down on the scorer's table in front of Pates.  "Take what you need to make a good call and leave me the rest!" Gulsvig yelled at the ref.  The ref nearly broke his fingers signaling a technical foul.

Gulsvig immediately shut up and sat fuming on the bench.  A few seconds later, Pates turned to a student sitting nearby. Here, take this wallet and give it back to Sonny," he said.  "The game isn't over yet."

I don't know about everybody else but I was laughing my butt off!   :D ;D

Wonka, I'm sure you must have heard some Sonny stories from Papa Wonka over the years.  Gulsvig was certainly one of the more colorful coaches in the history of the MIAC.

cobbernation

New to the bball board.  I will appear more often once the football season is over.

The cobbs will have a good post game starring Luke Linz, but other than that it's a bunch of junior players that are really unproven to what their talents are or lack there of.  We will have to see once conference play starts.  Should be quite the season and looking forward to it.

Ah, the Highland Villager, where I graced the People section about three or four times in my life for various things like getting top journalist at Hamline award (doesn't say much) and hitting a walk-off home run against Humboldt (says even less). I do like Wright better than his predecesser (I can't spell it) Cody.

With a few others throwing out predictions, I will throw out my top 11 with no analysis.

1. SJU   2. UST   3. CAR   4. BET   5. HAM   6. STO   7. GAC   8. CON   9. SMU   10. AUG   11. MAC

Willy Wonka

Drake - I've heard about 20 different tellings of that story. It's one of Papa Wonka's favorite, including the time he threw down on SJU's Frankie Alphabet.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.
