EXCELLENT response!  +k

I just thought there must be some inside joke about 519 that I didn't know about! ;D

TommieHoops4Life

DP,

Robinson at UST should have no problem playing forward. That kid is a stud just waiting for some playing time to come his way. I see him being the Tommies option after Ike and Schnettler, and especially if Keating gets in foul trouble or gets hurt. We didn't hear much about him last year because he simply didn't play much, but I think with more playing time, this is a breakout year for LR.

Quote from: d3bballfollower on November 15, 2006, 09:04:42 AMAs far as scheduling...having played at Hamilton I have a first hand knowledge of how terrible NESCAC rules are...even though Hamilton is in the liberty league for basketball we still had to abide by NESCAC rules...for instance- we couldn't start practice until nov. 1...that means that when all NESCAC teams start practice they are 2 weeks behind everyone else in the country...second, if i were a team like tufts, bates or williams i would really pusy for a double round robin because anyone can knock off someone else at any time in the NESCAC...thankfully the NESCAC took their heads out of the ground in '95 when they finally started allowing teams to participate in the NCAA tourney...still have yet to do that for football...sorry trinity and williams...you're totally right Greg, for how "intelligent" the NESCAC is they still have a lot to learn

You're a Ham Tech boy? You're going to have to tell me what it was like to play for Coach Murphy sometime. I'm an upstate NY native, and the man was a legend there even way back when I still lived close to the 'cuse.

Chiding the NESCACers on their board about their league's single round-robin is always good fun; it seems to provoke equal measures of shame and defensiveness on their part.

Bet34- The NCAA has made ti illegal to "redshirt" freshman...there are still medical redshirts, although there is rumor that those may be done away with for D3 as well...i think that is absolutely ludacris, but we'll see what happens...teams might start doing what a lot of the WIAC teams do and have their freshman practice with the team up until the first game of the year and then have them practice on their own to keep that year of eligibility

AKA "grayshirting".

The NCAA won't outlaw medical redshirts, because they'd be avalanched with lawsuits if they did so. It's not as easy to get a medical redshirt as one might think; there's a lot of paperwork involved that includes signed affidavits from physicians, x-rays, medical records, etc., and each case is reviewed by a committee set up by the NCAA for that purpose. Hence, they're not really all that common. Not nearly as common, at least, as regular ol' freshman redshirting used to be.

i believe the reasoning behind getting rid of redshirting in d3 was because of the scholarship issue...players at the DI and DII levels can redshirt because they are getting payed to play for 4 years, and the coach has the ability to decide if that will be the first 4 years or if the student has the choice to stay for that 5th year...whereas at D3 there are no scholarships, but there are tons of players, and it is to stop teams from having 30 kids on a roster and having all of them practice, but never play...Stevens Point has been notorious for redshirting players in the past...2 key ones were Bennet and Kaslow

Actually, the reason why redshirting was outlawed was because of the public/private tuition imbalance and the influx of NAIA schools. Public schools (WIAC, NJAC, SUNYAC, CUNYAC, MASCAC, Little Eight, etc.) typically charge only a fraction of the tuition that private schools charge. Because of this, it's much more economically feasible for a student-athlete to enroll at a public school for five years than to do so at a private school. That made it much easier to redshirt players in various sports at public schools; nobody else in all of D3 did it nearly as much as did the WIAC schools. Also, new members who had recently moved into D3 from the NAIA were bringing in their redshirting tendencies with them.

Aside from the issue of competitive imbalance due to cost, redshirting was also seen as being against the philosophy of D3. D3 is all about the student-first, athlete-second mentality, and designing a student-athlete's academic path around his or her team's roster maneuvering was something that rubbed D3 school presidents the wrong way.

It wasn't necessarily designed to reduce the size of rosters. Plenty of programs still have JV teams and/or large rosters.

Must have been a slow night in your lonely vigil patrolling the cyber frontier outposts of D3 land for you to share multiple posts with us last night.   ;D  Glad  you could stop by & visit.  Don't forget to rinse your coffee cup out & add another log to the fireplace before you head off.  Thanks for stopping by!  ;)

Mafia ~

Dang that was a long post! You're challenging my UST education with posts like that!

Lonnie playing forward isn't an issue. He plays bigger than 6'2, he's got hops and he is the most aggressive defender on the team and he's not afraid to mix it up.

They also have 6'5 Tommy Shimek coming off the bench and 6'6 Freshie David Baker to spell Ike and Keating.  Both have looked good in scrimmages thus far and continue to get better with time.  Biggest thing is not getting in foul trouble for Ike and Mike.  Both are prone to foul trouble, but I'm guessing the coaching staff has let them know the importance of them being on the floor as much as possible.

It will be interesting to see who comes off the bench for the Tommies.  In the past it seems as though more guys get a shot in the first few games and after that Fritz slips into a rotation.

What other teams open up this weekend? Where?

d3bballfollower

games tomorrow-

Dakota state at Bethel- W for Bethel
Hamline vs Colorado College- big W for Hamline
St. Olaf at Southwest MN State- L for the Oles
St. Thomas vs Occidental- tough W for the Tommies

looks like it could be a good 3-1 start for the MIAC

also Saturday, good region game between Gustavus and Buena Vista and then St. Thomas vs La Verne

what are others thoughts on outcomes for Friday and the rest of the weekend?
