funbballer,

From the uglyness I've seen CSB, you might have better luck with a Johnnie! The UST joke has always been Tommies don't let friends sleep with Bennies! :P

I went to a Northern State basketball camp when i was younger and i must say that Meyer knows what he is talking about. A  very intense coach that knows what he is doing.

I'm originally from the Aberdeen area (and my mom works at NSU) and have been going to NSU games for ages, and Coach Meyer is a great coach.  You don't get 814 career wins without being a very good coach.  Ironically, Coach Meyer got his coaching career started at Hamline.  Northern plays Kentucky tonight on ch. 648 on DirecTV at 6 PM, and then they travel to Vanderbuilt for another preseason tune-up before playing Concordia.

With NSU having two preseason games against quality D1 opponents prior to the CON game, CON will have their hands full playing NSU.  NSU has possibly the best D2 player in Matt Hammer.  They also have a very deep bench.  It will be a good preseason tune-up for CON, but I don't see them hanging with NSU for too long.

Please don't let any of my beloved cobbers hear that news.  I'm distressed to hear the preparation NSU is enjoying prior to the cobber matchup.  Obviously, they did some scouting during the summer and understood the need to get some game legs under them before facing the daunting challenge made manifest in "The Running Cobbers."

*Sob*    *Sob*   *Sob*     It will be a very nice date!!! HAHA yeah well the wolves only have 81 games left to suck it up!!! I have lost alot of faith in them in years past so i cant judge them after one game but i do agree that they looked good after one despite the third quater defensive lapse

USTs weakness will be their defense. Out of their starting five, only Sweeney has shown an ability to be a reliable defender. Rosefelt is a presence in the fact that he is probably the conferences best shot blocker, but he has yet to show a grasp of defensive fundamentals. Keating is a very good player and very smart, but he could be exposed by quicker 3s off the dribble. And while Schnettler is a defensive improvement over Anderson at the 2, he is far from what could be defined as a stopper, let alone a good defender. Shimek is a very good post defender, but too often his foul trouble hampers the way he plays on the defensive side-laying off and giving up easy buckets. That leaves them pretty lean, defensively speaking, in the starting 5. As earlier stated, Robinson could be the guy off the bench who provides defensive support, and I also believe thats a role someone like Weaver could fill (as the point never materialized, nor did a stint as a bench scorer) as the coaching staff wants him on the floor.
All that said, I still think they go AT LEAST 18-2 and win the conference. Ike will get a hold of the basics of defending and team defense, and become an even better protector around the hoop, and Keating will prove himself to be quicker than expected. That gives them a good on the ball defender (Sweeney), an average defender guarding the wing (Keating), and a strong presence in the middle (Rosefelt). I believe they will be a good enough defensive club to hold teams under 70, which is not great at all, but while they score 80+ it wont be an issue.

Maffia- Are you going to Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend to see the Knights play?

megalomaniac - Thanks for the post.  I happen to agree with you when it comes to defense and St. Thomas.  I do think that Rosefelt could be an outstanding interior defender if he wanted to be.  With his length and athleticism, few people should have success when they enter the paint against the Tommies.  While a record of     18-2 is possible, I think 17-3 or 16-4 is more likely.

sju4life - I never made it to the St. John's scrimmage, sorry.  I had planned to go, but my wife grabbed me at the last minute for a work-related function.  Did you go?  Did anyone go?

I see that Kentucky beat Northern State by 25-30 last night.  I think that's a respectable margin, all things considered.

I fully expect NDSU to beat both Concordia and Hamline in the coming weeks, although keep in mind that most of the NDSU players are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen/sophomores.  So it's not like the Cobbers and Pipers are playing a senior dominated team.  If either can keep it under 15 points I think that would be respectable.

BETHEL34

Looking forward to finally being able to post on here...  Looks like it is going to be another crazy year for that 5th and 6th spot in the playoffs.  I got to agree with Jones, Bethel in that 5th or 6th spot is not that far fetched.  A couple good youngsters and a much better all around Andy Cook.  I really think he will be the difference maker this year for Bethel.  He has gotten a lot quicker with his feet and actually has some post moves this yr that is going to make him a big threat inside.  Not to many 6-10 245lbs body's in the miac.  He should have a great year and be a big part of why Bethel makes it to the playoffs this year.  Anyways, it is going to be a fun year in the miac, less than 3 weeks!

local coach- NDSU and Concordia actually won't play this year.  the other d2 team on concordia's schedule is cross-town rival MSU Moorhead.  Northern State should hold a considerable advantage over the cobbers strictly on the basis of their superior personnel.  However, look for a relatively evenly matched game between CC and MSUM.  The cobbers should realistically expect to play with and beat the dragons.

I heard MSUM cut several upper classmen, and took freshmen instead. Is that true p...rim?

NSU has a couple of dandy games with Kentucky and ???, was it Vanderbilt. Coach Meyers doesn't believe in the "cream puffs" like some of these miac coaches, does he?

pacific rim

I think that is correct, funballer.  MSU is young, i suppose.  Should be an exciting game.

BETHEL34

Word from Bethel.  I wasn't able to get to the game tonight but was talking to a player who said they beat up St. CLoud State pretty good tonight.  They played 3, 20 min halfs and I guess after the first two 20 mins, they were up 20 pts.  Then the last one the starters didn't play much.  I don't know how good st. cloud state is this yr, but either way, beating up on a d2 team can sure give you a lot of confidence.  I heard we shot it pretty well tonight from behind the arc and Andy Cook I guess played very well against their 7 footer.  Jones, i heard you were there for awhile.  How did we look?

Yes I did make it to part of the scrimage.  Bethel looked smooth, large in part to Cook playing well on the inside.  He is a different player this year, he looks great!  St. Cloud is pretty weak this year but either way...Bethel played excellent.  I just hope that Bethel doesnt have Cook front anyone this year because when he gets big in the lane and gets his hands up, he cant to shot over with accuracy.
