who does everyone think is the most underrated player in the MIAC?

I'll go with Brady Brink on this one. He is a fantastic player and will suprise alot of teams and fans this year.

watchmen- i really like your pick of brink...however i think he won't get as much chance to shine this year, but next year will be his coming out party when westman, ohme and the schaefers are gone and he becomes the right hand man to lieser...

My thoughts...

Schnettler is the best 2 in the league...You prepare for him more than anyone else, and that is how I would judge the best.  BU should have prepared some more for him in the past!

I hope by years end that Laugen will be mentioned in your top 5 list of pg's.  He may not put up the points...but I believe he will handle the ball great and be a floor leader.  I hope he leads Bethel to a lot of W's

I will attend the BU/Ham game on Saturday...and am hoping for a good one.  I would be very surprised if Ham could top the Royals considering their domination of the pipers over the past years.  They have all been close games...but BU finds a way to win against Hamline.  Over the past 6 seasons they have won 11 of 12 games.  I don't think Bethel has beat anyone more in that time.  And that only victory came on a last second buzzer beater from near half court by a little point guard...his name slips my mind (he went to cooper for HS).  Anyway...hope the streak continues..."At the Birthplace of Intercollegiate Basketball" :)

That would be nice but Leiser is a senior academic wise so he may not be around next year.

Drake ~ Did I hear that right?!?!?! Mark Buri and DeRock in the same sentence!  Now if that's not a big compliment to DeRock I'm not sure what is.  I'll agree he's got a big upside but I think I'll have to wait until this year gets going a little bit before I put him in that elite class.

I like the Laugen pick for pg's.  He's gonna be good and I think he is underrated.  How's he been playing this year? I haven't seen any box scores for Bethel.

well, after reading this debate on the best 2 guard in the conference/ best guard in general i hear the name schnettler and liesure over and over again with the majority of people picking schnettler.  I am pretty disappointed people are putting Tyler Westmans name in there for best shooter/ 2 guard.  He shot 44.5% from the 3 point line last year (ahead of schnettler and leisure, westman ended up 3rd for most threes made in the conference and he only played in 20 games last year when the average person on the list played in 26.  Tommies for life talks about schnettler creates so many shots for others with his passing and driving skills yet schnettler was not even in the top 15 in the miac for assists, or for assist to turnover ratio.  With ike and keating to pass too, i really think if schnettler possessed these skills he shoudl have been in the assist leaders but he wasnt.  I am not saying westman is the best but i sure think he deserves it as much as liesure or schnettler does!!!!

Mark Buri is an old Nativity Native. Gotta love him.

Had my first Hutch H.S. game tonight. Man, do I miss basketball? Former Piper Jesse Hendricks was in attendance to watch his senior brother Brady, who is going to make some school lucky next year.

Willy Wonka

PI - Red Wing, thee of 5 wins last year, topped 4th ranked Marshall tonight 59-57. Barry "I'm the man" Wohler was in attendance and watched his recruit miss the game-winning 3 at the buzzer.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Bow - Sorry for any confusion I may have caused with my earlier statement.  I was trying to state that if DeRock continues to work on his game, he could in the future be compared to Buri.  At this point he's simply a young player with a tremendous amount of potential.   I wouldn't want any candy peddlers to misinterpret my comments.   ;)

Ho-hum - Bethel dominates Hamline once again 93-89 & and for the most part, the game really wasn't that close.  Bethel lead at the break 48-35, & was cruising through the 2nd half when the slumbering Pipes work up against Bethel's 2nd & 3rd team players.  FY Chad Rich hit a couple of J's for Hamline & then it was into the full court press which initially, Bethel handled poorly.  But Corey Laugen & Moberg hit some clutch FTs down the stretch for the Royals to ice the game.

I haven't seen a boxscore yet, but the scoring match up between Madson & DeRock was fun to watch. I'm not sure, but I think DeRock may have edged Madson out in the scoring column.  They both had a couple of highlight shots, with Madson doing a jump stop in traffic & sweetly kissing a J off the glass.  DeRock answered right back with a tough baseline J, & later on hit an awesome trey toward the end of the game to make the Bethel faithful a little nervous.

Bethel did a better job of trying to get the ball into the post & occasionally were even showing a little hi-lo action with Meadowcroft & Moberg.  Other highlights-- in the first half Laugen, had a great full court drive & dropped a dime to Meadowcroft.  Strom came through with a tough, acrobatic drive to the hole for an and 1 in the 2nd half.  And for 28 – 35 minutes or so, Bethel did a pretty decent job playing defense.

Right now Hamline seems to need another big body to go along with Foster, & they sorely miss the presence of Charlie Goode.  Or they could have used David Johnson to work the inside against Bethel today.  Still no signs of Joe Smock, & Korey Kelzer played very few minutes today for the Pipes.    When Hamline uses their quickness to move the ball rather than play one on one, dribble, dribble, they're a much more effective team.  And yes, I agree with Wonka, selling out for steals doesn't always mean one is playing good defense.

BU 93, Hamline 89 - Sounds like a defensive struggle compared to:

Lincoln pours in 201 pointsNo. 11 Lincoln shattered the Division III record for points in a game, trouncing Ohio State-Marion 201-78 in a tournament at Division II Salem International.

The Lions twice set the record for most points in a half, scoring 97 in the first half to edge Redlands' previous mark of 93 and adding 104 in the second half.

Samie Wyle shot 23-for-44 from the floor and 21-for-41 from three-point range to finish with 69 points. The 21 three-pointers are another Division III record.

Through the first 4 games of the season (they lost the 5th last night), Wylie was only 12-39 from beyond the arc.

WW - Your man Olson came up big in the scoring column (19 pts) AND on the boards (5 rb).  In fact, he outrebounded Sowden, Doble and Stein.

Interesting stat in that young Cassens had 0 assists in 36 minutes.  Gusties must have taken Augsburg out of their offense.  Cassens seems to very adept at taking care of the ball as he only had 1 TO.

Warning Long Post Ahead

From Collegeville, same song second verse. Johnnies had the the Redbirds on the ropes and couldn't deliver the knockout punch! Johnnies led by as much as 19 early in the second half, by the 12 minute mark the lead was down to 7! Once again I have to give props to SMU, they out hustled the J's during that stretch. They were on the floor scrapping for loose balls and fighting for rebounds. The J's just seemed a step slow. After a 30 sec TO Lieser hit a 3 that seemed to deflate the Cardinals. While the lead was never comfortable, it never got below 8. Once again the J's hit some FT down the stretch to seal the deal!

C. Schafer led the J's with 20 and 11. All 5 starters for the J's scored in double figures. Go figure, after touting Lieser as a good shooter he struggled with his shot today. Watching Westman in warm ups it looked like he was spot on. The game proved this out. He had his best shooting night of the young season. The thing that has impressed me most so far with Westman is he is not forcing shots. He is taking what the defense gives him. Ohme quietly had another solid game. Thus far, he has played very much under control. I will go out on a limb and say that by the time the meat of the MIAC schedule rolls around (after Jan 1) Brady Brink will be starting in the 4 spot for S. Schafer.

The Redbirds were led by B. Haywood. The guy was unreal from deep, 5-7(these weren't toe touching the arc shots either) and I couldn't remember the 2 misses! He does a nice job of creating his own shot as well. The player for SMU that impressed me was #24 frosh Alex Washington 16 pts and 10 reb. If there was a Mr. Hustle award he would have won it hands down! If he continues to develop he will be a force in the league in the future! Finally, is it just me or does T. Smith get away with murder on the inside. It was deep in the second half when he got whistled for a foul. I expected it to be #4 maybe # 5 and it was only his second! He is a master at clutching and grabbing and getting away with it!

Just like last Wednesday, a win is a win. Holding serve at home is what you are suppose to do. Monday night the J's take the show on the road for the first time this year when they go to CAR! It should be interesting.

Mr. Ypsi

Considering that OSU-M has ONE senior and ONE junior on the roster, and dressed only SIX players for the game (and IMO would probably lose to Cal Tech or UMPI by 20 - to choose two of d3's worst), does this tell you anything about Lincoln's sportsmanship??!! :(
