Gold and Black

Willy - have you heard that GAC has likely won the recruiting sweepstakes for a certain PG from Benilde?

Drake Palmer

G&B, I've seen Benilde play 3-4 times in the past couple of years & IMO, there really wasn't a PG of note to speak of. However, with that being said, they did have a nice all around athlete, Mike DesLauriers (sp) a 2G who was probably their leading scorer.  He is noted more for his baseball abilities, & is a nice fielding shortstop with a big stick.  He was one of the metro leaders in batting average this season.

Drake - I think that is whom Gold and Black is referring to.  I saw the Red Knights play once this past season and thought he would be a nice role player in the MIAC.

On another note, at a recent golf outing that I attended, I was told that the Johnnies are getting a couple of 6-7 transfers.  I didn't think they needed any help in the front court with the two twins but I suppose that size never hurts.

Gold and Black

Local MN Coach - I think the Gusties might have higher hopes for DesLauriers than just being a role player. He might be role player for a team like St. Thomas, but GAC has a tendency to take players who most would call a role player and turn them into a starter who plays 25-30 minutes.

I had not heard that yet, but that is good news. The coaching staff was pretty high on him I think. This brings about an interesting situation for next year as GAC should again have some options at PG. Hoff, Tyler Kaus and the new guy may all compete for minutes.

OAS,

You are correct.  I think Rosenberg acted against his better judgement in allowing the mascot. I think it is most unfortunate, and I am fearful that it will generate or provoke additional athletic embarassment for the school.

WW,

The news about DesLauriers is interesting.  Earlier this year he had signed with D2 Concordia University to play baseball, then he had an outstanding baseball season which stimulated some D1 interest and offers.   And now it turns out he's heading to GAC.   Wow!

KA-
I agree.  A mascot is a worthless attempt to build hype around athletics.  Winning teams build hype.  Great student athletes build winning teams.  And a committment to athletics attracts great student Athlete.  No commitment has been made yet so as far as I'm concerned, MAC is still a mess when it comes to athletics.

I look forward to meeting Feezell.  Although I have concerns with him not having experience overseeing a football program as Whitman does not have one.  I still think the second half of IrVanessa needs to go and go quick.

I think Rosenberg is moving in the right direction and people close to the department seem to agree but can we get the football team back in the MIAC and the women's hoops team playing a FULL MIAC schedule before we drop lots of coin on some Brewers looking inflated Scottish dude to pump up our mediocre crowds??

WW-
I read your National geographic for the articles.

I got nothing.

WW,

Check your voicemail when you get into Red Wing. I left you something about Sunday's Miesville/Dundas game on Sunday.

Did anyone else check out the NBA summer league at the Target Center this weekend? Reeeediculous, but really fun. Larry Legend made an appearance and my buddy shook his hand. Naturally, I went to see Artest and he gave the crowd these two doozies before ignoring them again.

"I'm from the ghetto, I don't need money."
"F*** Nike" - he quickly apologized after seeing the teenie boppers in the front row.

Hoops Fan

Knights Armor - I am just a casual fan of the Pulley League.  Go to gopherhole.com and click on the Howard Pulley link on the left, then on rosters.  I noticed a couple other names on the rosters that are MIAC or other D3 alums:

Ben Van Thorre - Mac
Geoffrey Reed - Aug
Tom Conboy - Aug
Tommy Chatman - Aug
Rich Melzer - UWRF
Doug Everling - GAC

Those are the only names that caught my eye, there may be others.  I think Andy Gilbert (BET) played last summer.

KnightsArmor

HF,

Thanks...earlier the gopherhole site did not have rosters posted.  I heard BVT had just returned a week ago.  And, bye-the bye, Conboy plays for Mac, not Aug.

Lunchtime Legend

WW -  I know you don't golf so how would you know what a good hole is?  The local watering holes don't count.  How is the new job going?  Playing at the 'Y' yet?  The MIAC might want to start with the Iowa schools first.

Local MN Coach

I had some down time at work today and so I browsed through the various MIAC Men's Basketball Sites.  Here are some recruiting and scheduling tidbits that I discovered.

St. John's has announced a 6-man recruiting class that includes three college transfers.  Tyler Westman, a 6-foot-3 wing from the University of South Dakota, Jason Fogt, a 6-9 post from Jamestown (N.D.) College, and Pat Wotta, a 6-1 point guard from Gustavus who apparently played j.v. last season, have all confirmed their decisions to transfer to St. John's.  They will be joined in Collegeville by incoming freshmen Matt Anderson, 6-6 of Detroit Lakes, Stashie Mack, 6-8  of Fridley and Cole Isetts, 6-3 of Red Wing.

Does anyone have anything to offer regarding any of these players?  I also find it interesting that the Johnnies have such a big incoming class as they graduated virtually no one from last season's team.

On the St. Olaf web site they have 4 freshmen listed on their 2005-06 roster.  They are Mitch Haugen, F 6-6 210 Rockford, Minn. Rockford & Brady McMahon, C 6-8 230 Cottage Grove, Minn. Park &  Matt Christensen G 6-1 175 Northfield, Minn. Northfield & Jake Mortinson C 6-8 200 Northfield, Minn. Northfield.

It appears that UST will be playing in the Wooster (OH) Tournament at the start of season.  In addition to the Tommies and the host school, UW-Stout and a team from Michigan will participate.

I have also learned that Hamline will have 8 or 9 new faces on their roster this season.  I do not know all of the players' names yet and there is nothing on the Piper website.  Some of the names I remember include a point guard from Southern Minnesota named Jon DeRock & wing players Nate Heussner from St. Croix Lutheran and Zev Kujolic from Minneapolis Southwest.  Also a forward from Wisconsin that was previously mentioned named Tony Thrasher and another forward named David Johnson who played in the post-season all-star game this year.  Also in the Pioneer Press the other day Charley Walters said that Chris Babcock, son of Rob Babcock, will transfer to Hamline from MSU-Mankato.
