There is never an excuse for blowing a 22 point lead.  One thing about SMU however is the fact that they never give up.  They tend to play a full 40 min. and i give them tons of credit for this MONUMENTAL win on the road!  Go Cards!!!!!!

Not to steal your thunder for having a two-game win streak, but beating a 1-4 team on the heels of four consecutive losses, and it being Hamline, I wouldn't go as far as monumental.

The Pipers are not a playoff team if they allow 85 ppg. Period. I've seen enough basketball in my life, and enough in this conference, to know when a team has it. Unless Wohler and his former Gopher assistants start focusing on winning ball games 75-65 and not 90-85, I'd expect a 7 or 8 win season for Hamline.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Drake- you said robinson was an mvp in the game tonight against Mac, and he did have 18 and 4 which is a great game, as well as probably playing grat d...but i also think even though ike had a rough game he still ended up with 13 pts, 15 boards and 9 blocks...i mean, i would have to consider a guy who was 1 block away  from a triple double to be the player of the game...obviously ike is expected to do that, especially against a smaller team like Mac, and robinson did play a great game, but i think that ike's performance tonight may have gone a little unnoticed and definitely shouldn't

Having been at the game, I have to disagree with you, D3. Ike put up some nice-looking numbers (on paper), but 5 or 6 of those rebounds were on his own errant shots. The block count is impressive and several of them were (Bill) Russell-esque. But  all too often, he looked lost out on the court. Robinson played well most of the game, and had a few nice drives that lit a fire under the UST offense. For much of the first half, he was the only Tommie to play with any enthusiasm or energy.

I don't know what was said in the locker room, but based on the body language of Fritz  during the latter part of the first half, I dont think he was patting people on the back.

Schnettler proved again why he is THE top guard  in the MIAC.  He drilled home five staight threes in the first 8 mins of the second half, had 3 or 4 second half boards and, along with Robinson, was the main reason that the game didn't turn into a rerun of last January's loss to Augsburg.

A championship team finds a way to win even when they are playing ugly and UST showd that tonight. In the team's defense, it was their 4th game in 8 nights, which is bound to take a toll on any team.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Its been a busy week for the 1000-point club as Sowden and Conboy each reached that mark tonight & Ike did it on Monday. Congrats to all three.

Conboy should break the Mac all-time scoring record, barring injury. That is amazing-- the record stood for over 40 years before (Pat) Russell broke it, then BVT topped it a year later and now Conboy should rewrite it less than 4 yrs after BVT.

Surprise, surprise no one says anything about S. Schafer's offensive performance tonight.  He stepped up when Leiser and Westman were having poor shooting nights.  Also Ohme continues to play well 10pts 5rebs 3dimes 0Turnovers.  Moving him to point guard late last season has really helped him develop his game.  He makes plays through dribble drive and breaking down defenses.

obball- i think the reason no one talked about schaefer's performance tonight (16 pts 5 boards) is because he hasn't consistently done anything, and i don't think that the main stays on this board are ready to give props to schaefer for his performance...maybe if he does this for the next 2-3 games people will have to start changing their opinions, but 1 game just doesn't do it...lonnie robinson had 18 tonight for UST, does that mean that we should all expect him to score 15+ per game the rest of the year? absolutely not...as the saying goes, every dog has his day...but you did make a great point about ohme...he started his career playing pg and played great, they moved him to a 2 and he started to struggle...he is now flourishing again, or at least playing back to old form because he is back in his natural position

i can recall at the beginning of the year when most people said that the pipers would finish anywhere from 1-6 with some putting them as high as third and the majority around 4th or 5th....So i don't know maybe i am wrong, but snapping a 15 game road losing streak and coming back from down 22 at one point, I will have to go out on a limb and say it is a monumental win for this cardinal team....
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

BETHEL34

Another tough loss for Bethel at home.  Carlton goes on a 16-0 run to start the second half and Bethel could never recover.  Bethel didn't score in the first 5 mins of the second half. :o  That is twice in a row they have come out of the locker room with a lead and lossed it in the first couple mins.  They need to figure out how to turn the tables and expand that lead after the break, not give it away like they have been.  Philips made some good shots and has pretty good range, but man he looks terrible dribbling that ball.  7 to's on the night, and it looked even uglier than that.  Everytime he was bringing it up the court with his head looking striaght down i thought he was going to turn it over.

D3b, sure I guess you can say Carlton played pretty good defense, but Bethel was just off all night.  They had a lot of open shots inside and out that they just weren't connecting on.  Chuck had a really off night on both sides of the ball.  His head was just not in the game at all.  A couple easy layups at big points late in the game for Carlton were granted to them by lack of good defense by Meadowcraft.  At one point under two mins, Westy took Chuck out and put in Dean a scrappy defender for defensive purposes.  You know your head is not in the game when you are one of your teams best defenders and you are taken out for a defensive posession and then put right back in for the offense posession.  He just wasn't all there last night and it hurt BU big time.

I still have great hopes for this young BU team.  Couple tough losses here at home, but that will happen for a young team (especially with no real test in the preseason).  They will get things worked out and make a push for that 3rd seed once it is all said and done.  There are just a couple things that need a little tweaking and a couple better decisions needing to be made towards the end of the game, and then these guys will start puting teams away.

Overall pretty ugly shooting night for both teams...pretty ugly night all around!  This was one of the tightest games I have seen ref'd in a long time here in the miac.  There had to be at least 10 calls each half on hand checks out on the perimiter or holds, and that is not an exageration.  Bethel never adjusted to the refs and Carlton was sitting at the 1 and 1 bonus with 15 mins left in the second half and were in the double bonus by 11 mins.  It is hard to amount a comeback when you are giving the opponent 2 shots every foul for the last 11 mins.  Again, a young team not adjusting to how the refs are calling the game.

Now with SJU and STU as our next two MIAC games, Bethel could very easily be 1-4 to start this season just like I had said a month back.  Lets hope they can steal one up in Johnyville or shoot the lights out against STU at home and pick up a vic.

One phrase describes what the UST vs MAC game was

UGLY BETTY!!!!!!

Oh my what sight that was.  It was almost painful to watch, but a win is a win and nobody is going to complain about that.  UST came out like a baby kitty making MAC look like they had NCAA tournament thoughts in their heads!  The game was filled with terrible passes, dumb fouls, and moans from the crowd. But hey, even the BEST teams have games like that and all that matters is a W.

Ike had a performance below his standards offensively, but he almost had triple double.  Hmmmmm, how many guys would say 13, 15, and 9 with a win is a bad game, I can't think of any.   Ike dominated blocking shots and Conboy was clearly befuddled about how to try to score.  Also he was rocking the short shorts with the spandex longer.  Not sure if that style is going to come back, but they do things a little differently at MAC.

Going into the break 6-0 is right where you want to be and the next game vs. La-Crosse is sure to be a good one.  UST owes them one from last year.

Oh yea, Bryan had 7 3's.  A few were shot from the parking lot and his step back is shasty mcnasty.

Wow, the J's pick up another nice road win. This is the first time since the 00-01 season that the J's go on the road and win at CAR and GAC. On a night when there shooters (Lieser and Westman) were a combined 4-20, they were able to pull out a win.

D3, I agree with your assessment of S. Schafer. Until he puts up numbers like that consistently we won't sing his praise. Brink had as many boards in 8 fewer minutes. Also would agree about the Ohme assessment. The games I have seen this year, he is a different ball player. I watched a couple of games last year after he was moved back to the point. In my opinion he struggled trying to remember what his role was. This year it is clear and he is playing with authority!

Drake, rumor has it the J's even played some hard nosed defense last night.  ;D

Nice to be able to have the option to turn to your inside game to when the jumpers aren't falling to bail you out. SJU wins the battle of the paint 36-20.

Yep, he played JV for 2 years.  I don't think he ever felt like he was comfortable in UST's system.

It seems like he's found a good home at MAC and he adds a certain unpredictability to games which often throws opposing teams for a loop.

Was the transfer motivated by BB? Do you think he would have seen the court for the Tommies this year?
