CAR did indeed beat the Cobbers tonight. 67-52. Zach Johnson pours in 24 and Tommy Drake adds 10. Jake Philips scores 5 points on 1-5 shooting?? Whats the deal with that stat. Jay Melson added 14 for the Knights as well.  The Cobbs were led by Linz and Erik Johnson each with 14 points and 8 and 9 rebounds respectively. The Knights were 10-27 from beyond the arc...while Concordia shot 48% from the field!

Watchmen,
Didn't get to see the cobber men tonight or the stats.  But how can they shoot almost 50% from the floor and score only 52 pts.  That's unbelievable!

Cobbers need to get it together and quickly if they want a shot at a playoff run!

interesting to note from tonight's cobber/ carleton game-

linz and johnson each played all 40 minutes
dyshaw seems to still be the only player knocking down triples for the cobbers
no brock citterman at all (is he injured? or is siverson sitting him due to poor play?) someone know the answer?

if concordia doesn't win their next 2 conference games they can kiss a playoff spot goodbye...next 2 games against Mac and Hamline...then they have to play Gustavus, Bethel, St. Thomas, Augsburg, St. Mary's and St. John's......we'll give them St. Mary's and 1 game due to them playing at home...but given those circumstances the best they could be is 3-7...not good enough to put themselves in position to make a run in the second half of the schedule

Johnson and Drake play 34 and 31 minutes, respectively, and haul down 1 rebound a piece as the Knights get thrashed on the boards 36-22.  Johnson does manage to hoist 22 shots while hitting 11.

10 treys and winning turnover battle appear to have been the keys to victory.  Only 5 TO's for the game while Cobbers had 22.

Citterman didn't play tonight.  I take it he's hurt???

I watched about 5-10 minutes in the 1st half on the webcast & the stat crew got something mixed up on the Cobb side of the ledger.  I saw both Linz & E. Johnson come out of the game.  And the other interesting stat is this -- they have Anthony Boike down for 0 minutes played yet his stat line reads like this: 1 FG, 1 foul & 2 TOs. I saw him play for at least a couple of minutes.  I also get the sense that the coaching staff is trying to  shake things up & Citterman might be caught up in this.

One other comment about the high number of Cobb TOs this year.  After watching the webcast, I think it's from trying to run the Princeton style offense when the passer tries to make the pass from the FT line to the cutter trying to go backdoor.  They were forcing it & I saw 2 TOs in just my short time watching the game.  It's just seems to be taking them that much longer to learn how to read the defense & run their offense this year.

Nice line for Melson from CARL --4-5 from 3s & a basket for 14 points?!?  He's a tough, athletic player but has never been known as a perimeter threat.  Nice game.  The knights semi-right the ship.  This lack of rebounding strength may come back to haunt them later on this season.

drake- if the cobbers were trying to run the princeton style offense i can totally understand the troubles they are having...i ran the princeton style offense in college and when we were first learning it we would throw that one handed bounce pass from the top to the backdoor cutter all the time, and we would turn it over a lot....once we got it though we were hard to stop.....once the cobbers get it they could be tough too, but they will need some guys to start knocking down triples to open up space inside the arc for the cutters

QuoteThe Pipers are not a playoff team if they allow 85 ppg. Period. I've seen enough basketball in my life, and enough in this conference, to know when a team has it. Unless Wohler and his former Gopher assistants start focusing on winning ball games 75-65 and not 90-85, I'd expect a 7 or 8 win season for Hamline.

73-67 is close enough. Then again it was the Oles.

Gusties become the first MIAC to fail to crack triple digits against UM-Morris tonight. I suppose they can take solace in being the first team to hold them under 77 points though, winning 91-58. That's a big positive for a defense that's been spotty so far this season.

FY Jesse Van Sickle should continue to get more and more minutes as the year progresses. Everything I've heard says he'll be a stud.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Amen Willie. Van Sickle is going rock.  The D had a few vintage Gustavus-defense moments this evening. Morris was stuck on 15 and 38 for quite awhile. Actually, a lot of the points Morris scored came from mistakes by the Gustavus offense. This team has the pieces, and it's up to Coach Hanson to put them together. Somehow, I think that bodes well for the Gusties down the stretch. I'm calling a 2nd place regular season finish followed by a MIAC Playoff championship.

Sounds like Morris is limping into their game with the Johnnies on Wednesday. If Morris isn't ready watch out. The J's will be a little upset about Saturday nights setback.

How do Johnson and Drake have that few of rebounds!?!?!?!

Johnson shoulder is probably sore from jacking up that many shots and couldn't hit the boards..........

C Nation, don't mean to rain on your parade, but the Cobbs have zero chance of making the playoffs! They have 3 conference losses now. they have 2 games with UST, 2 with GAC and one each SJU and CAR. That is 9 losses right there. That also means they would have to run the table against the rest of the league! Not going to happen.

The Cobbers will not make the playoffs this year...they are too young and don't have enough talent surrounding Linz...sorry but those are the facts

As for Gustavus...good team, but they have some defensive problems against those that can spread the floor and have multiple scorers...see the Johnnies game for example...I thnk a second place finish would be over-achieving and a playoff championship would be hard to do seeing as how they would have to be on road for two games...

What are the chances both the Johnnies and Tommies are undefeated come 1/17/07?  Johnnies only have a couple of road blocks to that happening...road trips to MAC, AUG and HAM...J's don't seem to match up well with Ham for some reason...
