UST obviously didn't play their best game and I don't think Scholastica could have played any better.  If they played again, the game wouldn't have been close.

UW-River Falls stomped some crappy North Central team from who knows where, 110-66. (It wasn't the good North Central team from IL, that made the NCAA's last year)

North Central is a Bible school located in or near downtown Mpls & plays in the NCCAA (?) association which is a loose affiliation of Xian schools acrss the country.

North Central is NCAA Division 3, not yet playoff eligible I think, so they elect to play in the NCCAA divison 2 playoffs since they are members of each association.

Scholastica definitely could have played better when you look at the box score.  Their leading scorer and rebounder, maupins gets only 4 rebounds and st. thomas gets 6 more boards, but scholastica still got up 8 more shots.  Give the tommies some credit, they shot 9-12 from three, 19-23 from the line and 55% overall, not bad at all.

CAR loses their second half lead to Mankato St and lost by 3...from what i heard they did a good job on the pre season D2 player of the year Luke (i am your father) Anderson...would have been a nice win...oh well...any updates on UST??

At one point UST was down by 20 & at the half they were down by 15 points.

UST up 80-79 with 13 seconds left. RF player makes the front end of a Ft misses the 2nd Schnettler takes a 3 to win, misses, 2 offensive rebounds & couldn't control the tip End of regulation 80-80.

Keating fouls out

UST up on McCoy's and 1 83-82

BS fouled hits front end of FT up 84-82.

Drake Palmer

BS hits the front end of a pair of Fts, Tommies up one.

Al McCoy gets an offensive rebound of a Schnettler miss, gets a bucket,

UST up 87-84

Dwyer at line misses both Fts

RF calls TO with 10 seconds left. Misses a trey

Tommies very, very, lucky. But a win is a win.

Does this mean that the Gophers won't me Monsoned anymore?  ;D

Happy New Year everyone!  +k all around to get the year started.

Since the Gophers & the pros seem to be generating more negative excitement, lets' hope at the D3 level we'll be reveling in news of a more positive nature!  ;)

Back to the pros for a minute, yesterday's Pioneer Press had their annual "Loop Achievement Awards."  This send up is similar to Patrick Reusse of the Trib's Turkey Awards.  They're online if anyone cares to read them.  One of the musical awards that I particularly enjoyed was the song dedicated to the Vikes' own Dwight Smith:   ;D ::)

"Stairway to Heaven"

There's a lady who's sure
That her fever I'll cure
So she's climbing our stairway to heaven

Though there's grime on the walls
And some kids down the hall
She is climbing our stairway to heaven

Should be home in the sack
But this baby's got back
So we're climbing our stairway to heaven

Oooooh ooh ooh Ooooooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
And she's climbing our stairway to heaven

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
And nowhere to go
The stairway's calling you to join it

Dear lady, can you feel the wind blow?
Keep the door closed
This stairway's fine for a postgame whim

(Guitar solo)

And as we grind on down the road
I hear a voice spoiling the show
Oh, officer, just let us go...
We can't stop now, we're in love mode
A couple drinks just turned to gold
And if I concentrate real hard
Her name will come to me at last
They're all like one and one like all, yeah
The NFL, that's how we roll...

(Guitar solo)

And she's climbing our stairway to heaven.

Yeah, but scanning the boxscore I noticed "Waren Sapp's" name was nowhere to be found.  Then I realize that Alex Washington, the soph Sumander was raving about didn't get in the game either.  So I did some further digging around, & notice that Washington & Terrence Smith's names are no longer listed on the team roster.   And unless my eyes are failing me, they've pulled Washington's stat line from the team stats categories.

Drake any further update on this situation?

Happy New Year and +k to all the usual suspects!

I've been a longtime Sooner football fan, but my hat's off to Boise State!  What a gutsy, ballsy performance in the Fiesta Bowl.  Their coach had a great game plan & went mano-mano with the Sooners.  Then when the time came for it, they pulled off some clutch plays with the coolness & flair of seasoned, riverboat gamblers.

On a sidenote, I don't know if I've ever seen a team covered with so many tats per player.

Ut oh in MIAC land... ???

The Johnnies go down to the land of Disney & soundly loses to Ursinius 73-49 & shoot an abysmal 29.6% from the field.

Back in MN, the SMU Redbirds get back into action & works Nebraska Wesleyan 76-61.  Good win right?  Yeah, but scanning the boxscore I noticed "Waren Sapp's" name was nowhere to be found.  Then I realize that Alex Washington, the soph Sumander was raving about didn't get in the game either.  So I did some further digging around, & notice that Washington & Terrence Smith's names are no longer listed on the team roster.   And unless my eyes are failing me, they've pulled Washington's stat line from the team stats categories.

Extreme Tuber or Flip the Red Bird, what's up? Hopefully this isn't more bad news, or is the end of a bad news streak for a school that has had more than their share of negative news in the last few weeks.

Terrance Smith, Alex Washington, and Rayshawn Redmond are three players who did not meet academic standards at the fine institution of saint mary's university of minnesota.

concordia of the north

concordia at macalester tomorrow.  one of them has to win.  one of them has to win even more than the other, actually.

i can't believe uwrf took ust to overtime.  they did not look like a smart basketball team at all when i saw them in bethel's gym.  their defense was gutsy but poorly managed.  if ust was organized at all they should have picked them apart. did anyone see or listen to the game?

Tuber – sorry to hear about your team's personnel losses, especially for Terrence Smith.  You hate to see a senior drop out of school when the academic finish line is so close.  Not to speak of the educational investment --both time & money already spent, & potential career earnings lost by not getting that degree.  Plus the opportunity for him to play one last time in an organized sports setting & for us as fans to watch.

CON – I did listen to the final minutes of the UST-UWRF game the other night, but I'll let other posters give their perspective.  I will say this – the Tommies appear to be struggling trying to find their team identity this year; & the temporary loss of Rosefelt makes the struggle a little tougher.

IMO, they've yet to find the right mix of players to replace Sean Sweeney & Joey Shimek from last year's squad.  Shimek provided strong post defense; rebounding & other intangibles, while Sweeney provided the floor leadership, D & ran their offense.  Based on his recent strong play, maybe Alex McCoy can provide that solid interior presence? I still don't know about the PG spot.  It seems they've tried everyone there this year with the exception of Brian Sames.

d3bballfollower

unfortunately for UST they do not have a guy on their roster who is as talented at the pg spot as sean sweeney...none of the players have the experience, the toughness, nor the leadership skills that sweeney possessed...plus, i don't think any of those guys can be counted on in the cluth like sweeney could...if the toms still had sweeney they would be a final 4 team right now...but without him and as others have said, without an identity they are maybe a top 6 or 7 team
