Tuber - where's Michael Rohr been for the Birds?  He's not been getting a lot of clock lately & it looks like they could have used him or another body to throw into the rotation.

Rohr did go down with a knee injury against mac before the break.  i know it was causing him some pain earlier, but he played about 10 minutes against Nebraska Weslyan.  My thoughts are either he re-injured it or he's just not playing 100%

0-of-17 from three-point range....You've got to be kidding me.

Game time of men's basketball is 5:30. How can Stoner not get the box score to the Trib by 11?

I also may have said third at some point. I'd be happy with sixth now.

You sure that's the case, or is it possible they just didn't choose to print it?

Article in this mornings Fool-Em on CORDS coach Duane Siverson's lack of success transitioning from the women's side to the men's side.

I like this quote in particular :

Siverson said he has probably gone head-to-head for a recruit with St. Thomas, St. John's, Gustavus and Carleton more than 100 times in his 15 years with the men and pulled in only one commitment.

Don't you think you might change something if you aren't having success doing it?

Wow wa wee wow!!!  That is a NASTY streak. 1 for 100+ over 15 years!!!  I have only limited ideas of how to turn that around.

-Search for more Dakota prospects
-License an executive jet to reduce travel time
-petition the school to change the mascot
-send a hot female liason to do the recruiting

A-Snow, I think#4 might be the ticket. The asst. coach he has doing the recruiting now sure isn't cutting it.

That's a juicy topic you've thrown out there Sumander!  I'm certainly not an expert & I wish I had more time to discuss the issues.  Awhile back, I think "Bennie" on the MIAC football board discussed recruiting challenges for the small liberal arts colleges.  Mose could probably chime in on this as well.

Recruiting of all types – athletic, academic, music etc. is a huge issue for all colleges and with escalating tuition costs; the challenges grow each year.  And at the small liberal arts colleges, recruiting poses many unique challenges with a number of different factors & angles to consider.

For many of the "privates," athletic recruiting is also a lifeline to remaining a viable institution.  This is one reason why St. Scholastica in Duluth opted to incur the additional significant expense of adding a football team to their sports program.  Help build up the male enrollment.  And interestingly enough, at the other end of the state, St. Mary's decides not to add football.  Recruiting & building endowments – that's the liberal arts colleges' mantra for the 21st century.

DP,

I talked with Carleton's SID last night, and Melson has some sort of mysterious lower back injury. Don't know how bad it is, but that's why he's out.

Melson is actually out with a stress fracture in his foot...they are not sure how long till he is back...right now the time table is 1 to 5 weeks

That's a tough blow.  His loss shrinks an already lean Knights rotation from a decent 7-8 players, to 6-7 players.  Good luck.

...But I digressed – back to the Cobbs.  When you factor in the Cobbs' perceived "remote" location in the NW end of the state, the challenges grow even larger.  Funny thing though, the football team seems to successfully cherry pick players from around the state.  However, basketball seems to be a different story.

It's my understanding that Cord typically tries to recruit one strong group every 4 years, develop them, & by the time they're seniors they're in the hunt for a playoff spot.  (If you look at their roster this year you'll see they have no seniors.)If you look at their record under Siverson, you'll see a spike in their Ws & a playoff berth approximately every 4 years.  In light of this year's record thus far, it puts a lot of pressure on the class of 08 to perform next year.

Here are some of my suggestions:

*Secure the Valley – from Grand Forks thru Wahpeton on I-29 - lock down any recruits 50 miles east & west in the Red River Valley.

*Own the Dakotas
*Cover the lake country – Alex, DL etc.
*NW MN

*Continue to support Cobb alumni who run AAU teams. (A few years ago a Cobber used to bring his AAU team down to the cities for spring tourneys)

*Run Sports camps
*Run Summer leagues

*Conduct interviews with current & former players, & transfers that are from the cities - find out why they stayed, attracted them to Cord & the F-M area – i.e. Mark Dixon, Gavin Ganab, Anthony Boike.  Or why they left

*Work with admissions & develop an ad campaign selling the idea of a vibrant, safe metro area of more than 160k population.

*Do like the U of WI & run shuttle buses back & forth between the cities on weekend.

*Build better/stronger relations with high school coaches

*Work the alumni networks ( I've gotta believe this is how Erik Johnson from SoCali showed up at Cord)

*Actively recruit the minority student-athlete – ND State School of Science a jr. college just down the road from Moorhead in Wahpeton ND has been successfully recruiting twin Cities kids for years.

*Find out what makes the NDSSS athletic programs successful & take their best practices.

In visiting with more than one local BB coach their is a perceived aloofness in the CORD program. The Cobbers are more interested in players from far away than in their own back yard. This is contrary to Terry Horan (CORD FB coach) who is in every high school in the area on a regular basis. High school coaches in the area have given the heads up to CORD on ball players and no one ever shows up to take a look at them! If this happens a couple of times you quit calling.

Or if you want to appeal to a different demographic, elaborate on the wild game and waterfowl hunting opportunities.

****Sum...if what you say is true, then the source of the weak recruiting has been discovered.  In a place as remote as CORD, the players will not fall in your lap.  If were in charge of recruiting, I would be on the heels of Mr. Horan.

Once again, hearsay, but that is how they landed Mr. Eckhoff

fair enough.  that could explain the lack of recruiting success.  why reject fate?? concordia has some sort of nexus of the universe associated with it that brings quality players to it every 4 years.
