That is unfortunate but not extremely surprising.  Any info on how many Madson put up?

Congrats to the Tommies on today's victory.

I guess it's our turn to win the next one. ;D

the Shoe was electric. 400 people get turned away, anyone arriving after the start of the JV game found themselves in the upper deck. Tommies weathered a tough shooting day from Schnettler (4-12 2-9 on 3s) and severe foul trouble for Dwyer (16 mins) to pull out the W. Tuma and Zittlow did a nice job maintaining when they were in at the point, and UST didnt seem to get out of synch. Keating bounced back with a double double, 21 and 13, and Rosefelt aided that with his own (20 and 12). Johnnies were atrocious from outside (3-20), but C. Schafer played very well inside and kept SJU competitive. Westman and Lieser were awful, combining to shoot 3-28 (2-15 3s) and keep the Johnnies from getting into a rhythm. Rough stretches for both sides on the offensive end of the floor, not really the most fluid game to watch. Definitely intense, however. Lots of scrums, a double technical foul, and some heated exchanges that kept the refs on their toes. Schnettler and Westman were going at it all night, jawing and eventually getting slapped for Ts after an altercation in front of the Js bench. Tommies showed an ability to win when forced to play D, and rely on their inside game. Bodes well for the MIAC playoffs and beyond.

Also telling that neither Lieser nor Westman took a free throw. Even with the Tommies getting saddled with fouls early in the 2nd half (7-1 and 10-4 at points in favor of SJU), those two didnt attack the rim and settled for the outside jumpers that werent falling. Thought that could have made a major difference for the Johnnies. The UST bench did very well in a limited role, with Grant and Shimek making a couple key plays each.

Big props to UST on the win today and to the seniors.

Westman and Lieser were downright terrible.  They were absolutely pathetic.  Biggest game of the year and those two shot SJU completely out of the game.  Way to step up.  Schafer and Ohme played pretty good.  Ohme should have shot more.

I was suprised that Westman and Lieser didn't try to get to the hoop more.  At least if you're shooting bad, get your points at the line.

The Big 3 came to play today.  KEATING was the difference, not Brink.  Take that to the house Sumander.

Should be a nice little sneak peak for a rematch in a week from now.

Very fun game to be at today.  Although it ended up a double digit victory i would have to say that for the most part it was close the whole way.  SJU was always one big three pointer away from making a run and taking the lead, to bad they never made it!  Looking at the boxscore I would have to say if I was SJU i would be pretty happy only losing by 10 or so when you shoot 20 percent in the second half and only 30 percent for the game.  Biggest dissapointment of the game was Jim Smiths coaching.  Craig Schaeffer was literally going to WORK ON IKE and Coach Smith pulls him and sits him for 7 straight minutes in the second half.  I felt like IKE played really really well today and keating also played well.  Schnettler again i think is overrated or just cant shoot/get open with liesure guarding him.  Last but not least the reffing did not cost SJU the game but brad Panning (aka hollywood) did a terrible job today.  The officiating was awful!!  I expect next saturdays game to be another great battle.      ps...how sweet was it that we almost had a bench clearing brawl!!!!!!!!

I have a request for St. Thomas -please get a bigger gymnasium.  You're supposed to be a University, not a High School!

Lieser is a good defender, no question. Schnettler, however, is not overrated. Chalk up his less than stellar shooting display to a good defender, and a nice defensive gameplan to take him out of the flow and regulate his touches. He still scored 18 pts, and opened up the middle for Rosefelt and Keating, who more than took advantage of all the open space. Even when hes not hitting, he demands full attention and limits the chances to double team USTs posts. His impact can be felt when hes limited from the outside, as evidenced in todays game. You missed the "Schnettlers Overrated Bus", as it dissapeared on this board weeks ago. You cant be overrated as a shooter when youre the 2nd best in all of DI-DIII.

Of the schools for which we have gymnasium capacities in Division III, St. Thomas' gym is way above the average. Even if the capacity is exaggerated by 900, it would still be average.

Pat, wow I'm really surprised by that, thanks for the clarification.  I just figured with an undergrad enrollment of I think 7,000 students, St. Thomas could do a bit better with their gym.  I guess we are spoiled at St. John's.  Does St. John's gym have one of the bigger capacities in the country for DIII?

Concordia's gym has a capacity of 4,500 which I would imagine makes it the largest gym in the MIAC. Off the top of my head I can't remember a gym in the MIAC thats larger as far as seating goes. GAC's Gus Young has a seating capacity of 3,500.  SJU's capacity has to be around 4,000.
