Gusties tomorrow against Luther, gonna be AMAZING!!!

David Collinge

I was at the UST/Stout game, and while I'm no expert, I thought I'd give my observations.

First, UST's point guard (Sweeney) hit a three at the buzzer to make it a one-point game; it was a great game but not really a nailbiter in the waning seconds.

I think what did in the Tommies was the short bench.  They basically played 6 guys; one guy (Worrell) came in for courtesy in the last half-minute of the first half, Dwyer played for maybe 2 minutes, and Peterson basically played the OT when Shimek fouled out.  Three guys played 42+ minutes, and it showed.  I was pretty impressed with Sweeney and Schnettler in the first half, but they had Schnettler pretty well shut down in the second, and Sweeney was totally gassed by the 10:00 mark of the 2nd.

The starting 7-footer for Stout was pretty much a non-factor, except that in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half he got aggressive and hung 4 fouls on Rosefelt, taking him pretty much out of what I suspect is his game.  In the OT, most of the offense was run through Rosefelt, but he looked like he was afraid of the charging call and tried a bunch of reverse driving layups, mostly unsuccessful.

UST was in control of this game at the half.  Stout pressed the whole game, but UST beat it with little difficulty every time (until once in the OT when Sweeney was forced to call a TO to avoid a 10-second call.)  UST was able to get a couple of layups by beating the press, and otherwise they moved the ball around well and shot very well, especially from outside.  Stout came out for the second half with a lot of aggressiveness and took advantage of a rapidly tiring Tommie team.  UST hung in and managed to force OT by staying in their offense and executing well, but they didn't shoot nearly as well (38% vs. 58% 1st half, and only 20% from deep in the 2nd vs. 56% in the first) and got outjumped and outhustled pretty badly by the fresher Stout team (Stout played 11 guys, 10 for 12+ minutes.)

Somebody below said it was usual for UST to play a 6-7 man rotation.  Maybe that works well for them; it's hard to argue with their success.  But it hurt them tonight, in my opinion.

They'll have no trouble with K'zoo tomorrow, though.

gusties...what the hell is so "amazing about GAC facing Luther. Big deal....Luther is not very good and GAC mongers eat lutefisk! You're so excited...what are you, the team  monkey??!!!!  :D

iowa_transplant

huh...the tommies get edged by stout tonite; the season's just started so that game prolly doesn't mean a whole lot but generally speaking, what's the word on the WIAC this year?

gusties

yes indeed, i am the team monkey...hahaha...  what is so wrong about me being excited for my team's season opener?  sorry for showing my emotions, i'll try to remain as Scandanavian as possible on the board from now on...

kar_v:  my thoughts on your picks. You did a nice job, but I've got some question marks on some of your picks:

1. GAC 18-2   [GAC will be 15-5 or 14-6]
2. UST 16-4   [UST will be the one that's 18-2]
3. CAR 14-6   [this sounds 'bout right]
4. BU 13-7     [won't finish in top 6]
5. Concordia 11-9   [Cobbers will be 14-6 or better]
6. Macalester 10-10  [MAC won't be .500]
7. Hamline 8-12    [HU will have 10-12 wins]
8. Augsburg 7-13   ['bout right]
9. SJU 6-14    [disagree, they'll be in the top 6, probably ahead of HU]
10. SMU 4-16 ['bout right]
11. St. Olaf 3-17  [can Koz even win 3?!!!]

gusties....no problem with you being excited for your team. Just coudn't figure why a GAC-Luther game is labeled as "amazing!!"

The amazing part will be to see if Whippler can make a move and get a shot off in 25-30 seconds!!   ;)

big_shocker

"Amazing" is a great word for having waited since March to watch your team play again. Don't see why it's such a big deal to use it.

Wish I could be there to see it, but duty calls.

Reporter: Charles, is there anything about the incident you regret?

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

David - Thanks for that info, that's just the type of thing I was looking for. By that analysis, it looks like finding shots won't be the issue this season - it will be finding minutes.

After reading Drake's analysis, I love this paragraph from the UST SID in the game write-up.

"Greg Chandler had 20 points to lead the Blue Devils, who have three 7-footers on their roster. Stout shot 60% from field (30-of-50), outrebounded UST 33-23, and made several free throws in the end of regulation and overtime to offset 20 turnovers (they finished 66% from the line)."

Talk about putting some good spin on a poorer than expected start. Also, I couldn't help but laugh at the Koz comment. Even if you don't dig my style, I like the honesty, funbb :)

I'm excited about tomorrow, but not quite excited enough to drive 90 miles to watch them play Luther. Radio will have to do, with random updates on SJU/CC football with the Gophs on muted tv  :)

Who was it that had the Broback scoop again? I just heard the inside story. Sounds nasty :(
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

WW
of course its the maffia that has the inside scoop...u gotta remember i always hear "the word on the street" and yes...not too pretty

also if BIG IKE had foul trouble against 7ftrs that are none factors whats he gonna do when the little guys push him around again like last year??????? or maybe he will prove me wrong?

also SJU will finish 3 or 4 in the MIAC led my OHME AND LEISER

i had a hotdog tonight at the gophers bball game that look like something i wont mention on this board

one more thing

ak47
how can we have to many scores if we are ave. about 80pts a game....not counting our horendous shooting night in our last game and we still found a way to pull it out against a tough gritty SJU team...that bad shooting could also be credit to that team we played...we love to run n gun...not gonna lie...and neil anderson is money and rebounds like a maniac....our teams should play next year in a 7 game series for a box of cracker jacks...i bet it will come down to the final shot in game 7 ;)

Wonka....what do you mean "I don't like your style?" You're cool....!   ;)

funbballer

maffia....careful what you say about my stress balls, that's a very sensitive subject, if you get my drift!

I'm curious tho, what kind of hot dogs are they serving at Gopher games that you can't mention? Is it a distinctive size, look, taste? I'm curious!   :o

Showtime Presents Real Men of Genius

Today I salute you Mr. Tiny Thong bikini wearer

Beach goers the world over see you coming and say,
Hey, check out the wooly mammoth in the rubber band.

Defying the natural laws of physics, you manage to squeeze
a fortysix inch waist into a thirty inch suit.

Like ground meat crammed into a sausage skin,
you take to the beach an proudly strut your stuff.

If you've got it, flaunt it. That's your motto. Which is ironic,
because you haven't got it.

So crack open an ice cold budlight, sweet cheeks.
And know that if you weren't wearing that suit, we'd ask you to take a bow.
