two questions:
1.  how in the world did sto beat bethel twice this year?    something rotten there.
2.  will both sju and ust send thank you notes to bu for losing to sto?   gac has been owned by sju this year,  and johnnies have struggled in splitting with the royals.   and playing oles instead of gac for tommies had to have been a relief, as gac apparently had no fear of ust as evidenced by their defeat of tommies a couple of weeks ago.
mauer, mauer, and spanier worked game in collegeville.   which one was mr. T tonight?

Johnnies win in style. The bandwagon keeps rolling!! Sowden kicked the ball in the first half for his first T, then mid way through the second half he was called for his 4th foul, while walking to the bench he yapped something to one of the refs and that got him T # 2. No more than 2 minutes later he was on the bench and must have said something again, the same ref tossed him and gave him another T. The Gusties also got a T for an ineligible player. Wittwer ended up with 0 pts on 0-1 shooting. The game itself was rough and very physical. The Johnnies shot the ball 10 times better than they did last Saturday. The Gustie post players were their only weapons tonight. Sowden and  Doble had some nice moves inside but it wasn't enough.  Brady Brink ended up with 16 for the J's. C. Schafer and Leiser go for 13 with Westman following with 12.

The Johnnies need to send a letter to Koz and Co. GAC was out matched tonight again. They gave up to start the second half.

I believe Spanier was Mr. T.  Sowden kicked the ball all the way to the other end of the court for the first one and after that he was on Spaniers bad side.

I'll be interested to hear GAC's take on the reffing when I see the boys tomorrow.

However, I'll reinterate the hatred for the Mauer power-mongers that I first mentioned a few weeks back. Regardless of whether the multiple T's were the right call tonight, I'm sure they went home with smug smiles knowing that they were the show and got to flash their muscles for all to see.

Mean Gene just put me on the media list for Saturday! I wonder what he'll say if (when?) I'm wearing a #78 SJU practice jersey when I flash my pass...

I'm guessing St.Thomas hasn't built a bigger gym since last Saturday?  :D

Watch - I'm just trying to figure this out. So on the 2nd T, Sowden was kicked out of the game correct?  Then he must have said something while sitting on the bench & the ref slapped the bench/ team with their 1st T & Sowden was banished from the bench to the lockeroom?  Then the Gusties got another T for using an ineligible player.  Right?  The boxscore has Sowden with 2 Ts & the Gusties with 2 Ts.

That's a tough way to go out.

ok...im really confused

why did my last post get deleted??

im really confused on that one and i have no idea why it would be deleted...an explanation would be glorious

I don't recall deleting a post of yours. The only post I deleted in here any time recently is the first post from a new poster that felt he had to make his debut by telling an off-color joke.

HOWEVER, the entire Hall of Fame has the ability to delete posts. There are 10 of them. If they felt you crossed the line on something they could easily have hit the button. Do I want to even know what the post was about.

And nice to see WW is back to his bad assumptions. For a week or so I thought he might have reformed.

Oh, I also deleted a post somewhere, maybe on this board, that said there would be no more regional rankings this year. I didn't have time to go through the explanation that that poster was incorrect but removed the misinformation so I could get to work.

The last team I saw the Mauers screw over was during a football game two falls ago. After four straight personal fouls — one when the captain of the team approached field judge Mauer for an explanation of the previous call — a linebacker took matters into his own hands and played smear-the-Mauer. He took a running start and blasted the dude standing in the playing field in the back as soon as the ball was snapped :)

Sure, he was ejected and suspended for the first game this season...but I'm sure he felt a whole heckava lot better about it afterwards than Sowden does right now.

I wasn't even at the game and I'm getting fired up — the Mauers are a joke.

Sorry, I gotta expand farther on the previous example...the Mauers refused to explain any of the calls (which ended up handing the game-sealing touchdown to the other team) to the head coach of the offending team, despite numerous pleas. However, they had no problem running their mouths — and badmouthing the offending team and players — to the guys holding the sticks, while I was five feet away and able to hear. Talk about your classy crew...

The First bench T came in the first half right around the time of SOwdens first. The second bench T was because of Sowden but they could only give him two. After that he was sent to the locker room. He had some nice gestures to the SJU fans as he left too.

I was at the SJU/GAC tilt tonight and the officiating was interesting to say the least...they allowed a lot of physical play in the first half...GAC took what looked to be 3 possible charges and didn't get one of them. They probably weren't going to get all three, but they should have at least got one of them....Then in the second half they started calling everything. At one point in the second half GAC had been called for 9 fouls and SJU had been called for 2....then they called eight straight fouls on SJU in the matter of 3 minutes.

Sowden's first Tech was legit....then he got called for 2 personal fouls in a row that were poor calls in my estimation which led to the second tech on the way back to the bench. Then the third tech was called while he was talking to a teammate on the bench...at that point the official was feeling very high and mighty....whether you agreed or disagreed with any of the calls made, it was a shame that the officials took center stage on what was probably going to be an SJU win regardless.

The other bench tech was interesting....from what I understood of the situation...the official book had the correct number of GAC players in the book(which is why GAC didn't catch the mistake in the pregame), however Tyler Kramer was not in the book (he was also omitted on the SJU program for some reason, which might explain why he was not in the book) so when Kramer subbed in for the first time, a tech was given to the GAC bench.

What are the odds? All three times the Gusties face the Johnnies, it's with referees who call an extremely loose game beneath the basket. The finesse post play of the Gusties cannot handle the brute force of the Schaeffers if the refs aren't calling fouls. For the first ten minutes, the Gustie posts did a great job adjusting to the situation and taking advantage. They created opportunities that forced the refs to blow the whistle. The game, which had started with a pace favoring SJU, was gradually drifting into a the Gusties' control.

Then one play changed the whole game. After a messy struggle for a rebound that easily included 5 fouls for each team that weren't called, Kane Sivisend manages to secure the ball. He then taps Schaeffer with his elbow, not remotely as hard as most contact that had been allowed for either team. Sowden got a T, St. John's got free throws and the ball, Gustavus turned it over, and they could never recover. I can't excuse the technical, though there certainly should have been a foul called on somebody long before the play reached that point, and the turnover certainly didn't help. But overall, it was an unfortunate coincidence that derailed the train for the Gusties.

Nice win for the Tommies over St. Olaf tonight. Don't be fooled by the 77-61 final, it was a pretty close game throughout and Olaf had it down to seven in the second half before UST pulled away.

The Oles really played hard tonight and shot well early, but Ike, Schnettler and Keating were simply too much tonight. Schnettler had 13 of his 21 in the first half, and Ike had 16 of his 25 in the first half. I actually thought it was a pretty well officiated game overall, barely even noticed the refs. Congrats to Koz and Olaf on a nice stretch run.

The key stretch in my mind was late in the first half. Tommies were up eight with the last shot, and Robinson hoists a three from about 25 feet. It hits the front rim, bounces straight up in the air and somehow goes in, UST up 11 at half. The Tommies then scored the first seven points of the second half, and looked in control until Olaf made its run and pulled within 57-50 before UST delivered its knockout punch. This St. Olaf team was a lot better than the one that got blown out by the Tommies twice this year. UST is good enough that it doesn't need many breaks, but they got a few in this one.

Ike is simply a man inside, he got the ball at will in the first half and scored pretty easily over Bain. He also had a lot of offensive rebounds in the second half. Schnettler hit his 3s in the first half, then got more aggressive and drove to the hoop in the second half. For the Dwyer doubters, 8 pts, 9 assists, 1 turnover and 5 steals. How does that taste?

I don't care how well the Johnnies played tonight against GAC. If the Tommies play on Saturday like they did tonight, they win by 10-15. Let's see if Lieser and Westman can combine for 0-40 on Saturday! I'm going to do everything in my power to get Saturday off and use my media pass like WW!

TommieHoops4Life

One other thing. What are the odds that a call can be made to the MIAC offices to officially ban Panning from officiating the title game? The crew tonight at Schoenecker was pretty solid. Let both teams play physical, stayed pretty consistent with calls and let the players dictate the outcome.

Good win for the Tommies, but some tightening up is neccesary for the rubber match on Saturday. Need to be tougher on the defensive side of the ball, as the Oles got way too many quality looks deep in the post, and a lot of opportunities off dribble penetration. That wont work against SJU, who thrives off those two situations. Game was never in doubt, even when Olaf made a small charge to trim the lead to 7 midway through the 2nd. That said, the Oles were game and didnt back down or fold at any point of the contest. Tip of the cap to Jon Bain, who played a tremendous game, scoring at will in the paint during the first half. Oddly, the Oles didnt go to him nearly as much as they should have after halftime (1-1 from the field-ONE SHOT?!, 14 minutes in 2nd half), and became a much more perimeter orientated team. Wag of the finger to Bergstrom, who drifted when the Oles needed some scoring and provided more than a couple "really?" type shots. Olaf shot 25-42 inside the arc, as UST looked a little lost on D, but rushed their offense and casted from outside earlier than I thought they needed to. UST did clamp down a little after the half, so those midrange looks were harder to come by. Feel the need to point out that the Oles are a classy group; dont talk, complain very little, help opponents off the floor, play clean, etc. I respect the way they play the game, and no one can question their heart.

Rosefelt abused Haugen down low, especially early. Was very aggressive in going towards the hoop, not settling for fadeaways as he has a tendency to do. Probably forced it a little too much in the 2nd (thus the poor shooting %), after Olaf started collpasing hard on him and showing 3 guys in the paint. Thats fine, it was good to see him charging at the rim. Schnettler was extremely active, and showed a desire to put the ball on the floor. Made Butala honor his drive after three layups, and that gave him more space off the screen to work with. Very impressed with Lonnie Robinsons performance. He played solid D, as usual, but also distributed the ball particularly well and displayed a nice touch from midrange. That should be a springboard for him to Saturday, as well as the NCAAs, where he'll need to shoulder more of the scoring load. Dwyer came back from probably his poorest showing against the Johnnies on Saturday in a big way. He chalked up 9 assists 8 points 5 steals and only 1 TO in his best game of the season.
