looks like the root of the cobbers problems was the INCREDIBLE discrepancy in free throw shooting.  This is not typical.  The cobbers enjoyed a reasonable advantage in free throws attempted last season.  however, over the course of the Wartburg tournament they were out shot almost 70-20 from the stripe.

i know we think dixon fouls a lot, but 50 surplus free throws can't be all his doing, can it?

megal....appreciate the update.

I had heard UWEC isn't very good. Gotta believe that coach is on borrowed time. Players don't really care for him all that much....so be the rumors.

But, they beat BV....and the Gusties are good so they should win by 30, right?   ;)

My bad, poor word choice. I meant to say pre-conference season, since that is what teams play for -- conference play. The national seen will take care of itself.

I disagree -- not with the idea that conference play is of paramount importance, but with the idea that the national scene will take care of itself and that the St. Thomas vs. Wisconsin-Stout game is therefore of minor significance. I'm pretty sure that the Tommies aspire to a berth in the NCAA tourney this season, which means that every game they play against a West Region opponent -- be it a MIAC team or the three WIAC teams that they're also scheduled to play -- is very important.

GS....YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!

All these regional games are very important come the end of the season. If your team has won the post-season tourney, that's fine, if not regional matchups mean everything. (unless of course you have an outstanding record, like 1 or 2 losses total and happen to get upset in conference tourney, then you might have an outside chance, but doubtful)

UST better pay attention and win those other 3 regional games or come NCAA time they may be in a world of hurt if they haven't automatically qualified.

Quite some time ago, someone on the board described the "at-large possibilities, but I don't remember what it was.

But, all of that is a long ways away. The key is win every one of your regional games so if you need an edge come tourney time, then it will work in your favor.   ;)

I thought I would offer some comments from opening weekend.

I was able to catch Bethel once at their tournament and I came away impressed.  Despite what they lost in Gilbert and Jones, if they can get consistent production from Perry that will help.  I still think that Andy Cook will have to play more then 10 minutes a game though or they will be a little thin on the front line.

How about Phil Sowden's big effort against Luther!  That's a huge plus for GAC if he can get a double double a game.  It's also nice to see Adam TeBrake starting out where Espenson left off.

I was surpsied to see Craig Schafer of St. John's as the team's leading scorer against River Falls.  He obviously played well, although Ohme didn't shoot well according to the box score.

Hamline apparently hung with NDSU for three quarters of the ball game.  It looks like they gave up a lot of free-throws in that second half though.  The stats had freshman Jon DeRock as the Pipers leading scorer.  He had 14 points along with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.  Nice stat line for your first college game, which just happened to be against a Division I team.

What happened to Concordia?  0-2 and Eckhoff obviously didn't start off like many thought he would and no one else was able to carry the load.

My final thought is this.  Why can't Mr. Rosefelt of St. Thomas play like he did on Saturday all the time?  I understand that he won't put up 31 and 19 every night, but there's absolutely no reason to think he can't score 15 and 15 at least, especially if he's going to play 35 minutes.

localcoach, Ohme's stats were pretty consistent with his career averages I think (including high school)..... He may have had 1 fewer turnover than avg. Leiser is a good addition to the offense and should help improve sju's overall picture by a couple wins this year. River Falls wasn't much of a barometer for SJU's purported improvement in the off season. Shafer stats show Smith still coaches the same game as ever.

Hey fellas - sorry to rain on everyone's conference season before some teams have even stepped out on the hardwoods, BUT.... we have a problem.

I am declining the pick'em this year.  Too much work for me, but I can pass on my methods and spreasheet to whoever wants to pick the ball up and run with it.

BethelGuy has graciously given of his time to run the "MIAC Pickem" in the past, but unless he's changed his mind, he's declined to do it again this season. So if we want to keep this event running one of you young gamers, Bill Gates juniors, MBAers types etc. need to step up to coordinate this.

Conference play begins next Wednesday 11/30.  I personally would nominate one of the Gusties, they seem to have won this event more than any of the other posters.   Where are you Westie, or SDGustie?

Local - if I'm Barry Wohler I'd be feeling guardedly optimistic good about my squad right about now.  I think that was a pretty impressive showing by the Pipers against NDSU.  I'll have to check them out for myself later on this week & see if I'll need you to hold a spot for me on the Hamline bandwagon.   ;)  They shot the ball fairly well from the perimeter whiuch was a definite weakness of theirs last year. By the way, what happened to Greg Koba/Kuba from Hutch?  I noticed he didn't play.

If I'm not  mistaken, I believe Eckhoff started fairly slow last year as well.

Meglo - didn't I recall seeing that you're were going out to Ohio to watch UST in the Wooster tourney?  We're missing your perspective on their games.

Longtime follower of WIAC basketball...

Very eager to see the early season matchup between Stout and St Thomas at the Wooster tournament. Will actually be in attendence. UST is the frontrunner to take the MIAC title, so playing a strong Stout squad should give everyone a good idea of just how could they could be. Especially posters on the MIAC board, who consistently downplay the strength, and veritable dominance, of the WIAC. UST is loaded this year, so it should be fun.

Local - I got the distinct impression that Kalamazoo, the team that UST beat down on Saturday was the MIAA's equivalent to an STO.  I'd love to see a stat line of 31 & 19 from Rosie in a match up against one of the top tier teams.  But yes you're right, 15-15 wouldn't be asking for too much from a player of his talent.

Any one making their way over to watch Mac & UW-Stout tonight?  This one could could get ugly for the Scots if their guards have problems with their counterparts from Stout.

Didn't Ike start last season with a 15 and 19 effort as well? People were jumping on his MVP bandwagon then like they are the Hamline team right now. We all know how that ended up. Plus, it's only natural that a D1 team wouldn't be too excited to play a bottom level D3 team while the Pipers would come out to the 9s. I still don't understand the connection there or why it got scheduled. Nonetheless, DeRock's start is still impressive.

I don't think I've ever heard of Ohme having a "good" shooting game. People keep hyping him, but I've not seen much to back it up.

As for BV...I agree, they seem to be way down this season. If not by their record, then by the lack of IIAC trolls over here asking for matchups of tomorrow night. Still, the Beaver Den is a tough place to play and GAC has lost to them each of the last two seasons (failed to convert on last second shots to win each time I believe). Hanson said on the radio after the Luther game that BV was considered to have the top recruiting class in their league each of the last two seasons. I'm not sure if that's true, but I believe they graduated 6/7 of their top 8 from last year. It could be they struggle to start the year and are right there to end it again, since they've been the top program in that league for the past 5 or so years.

Unfortunately, I can't do the Pick'em poll. I'm not sure who'd be willing to step up on the Gustie front...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

TommieHoops4Life

I agree with Mig's assessment a few days ago that UST has way too much talent to only be playing six players in a game as it sounds like that's what they did in the loss to Stout. Fritz knows he has plenty of capable players to substitute if somebody is in foul trouble, is tired or just isn't having a good game. It sounds like Saturday was an improvement all around. Nice to see Ike come back with 31 and 19. I look for the numbers to get spread out more evenly as the MIAC season starts. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see 4 of the starting 5 in double figures. The Tommies won't have success relying on one person to score 30 per game, they'll need solid contributions from 5 to 7 players to be successful this season, and they're capable of spreading the ball around.

Willy,

Are you going to be gracing your presence for RW at the state swim meet this week? If so, I'll see you at the U Tuesday and Wednesday. For some reason, Northfield just can't get by your squad this year.

Drake Palmer

Willy, after reading your last post one word immediately came to mind:

dour

Main Entry: dour
Pronunciation: 'du(-&)r, 'dau(-&)r
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin durus hard -- more at DURING
1 : STERN, HARSH
2 : OBSTINATE, UNYIELDING
3 : GLOOMY, SULLEN

Life's good

It's a beautifull late fall day along the Mississippi river
Turkey day's 3 days away
Gusties are 1-0
Their rivals the Tommies are not meeting pre-season expectations
Buena Vista looks to be down this year
AT is firing on all cylinders
Phil(ly) Sowden throws down a double- double in his first game out of the chute
UND women's are picked to win the NCC
You just reached your 800th post
Your karma count is out of the negatives

Life's good.

Give me some good news.  :D
