David Johnson saw some clock late in the first half and I believed scored a bucket. At 6'5 I believe, he'll fit in as a nice four but I think he is a year away from making an impact.

Nate Huessner played a little as well. Not much to say about him yet but looks to be athletic.

DeRock will be an MVP candidate by his junior year. He just has that look of superstar. I'm trying to think comparisions. Mark Buri waas a complete player that did everything for UST. DeRock will be that type of player, maybe not as good as Buri, but a fun one to watch.

Thrasher looked outstanding today. He was able to make some nice post moves, but then knock down a three the next time down. Played with a lot of composure and confidence.

Like I said earlier, I think Wohler has too many options and it might take a while to figure out a rotation. Tough stretch ahead before XMAS for the Pipes.

Willy, Drake & PI - I didn't get a chance to see the Hamline game today as I was visiting family up north.  I just got back and thought I'd check out the game statistics before I called it a day.  Unfortunately I see nothing on the HU website.

While I'm not sure what happened today against Northwestern, I will agree that right now the biggest issue the Pipers seem to have is finding a group of five players that work well together at both ends of the court.  Kyle Foster shooting three-pointers to win the game?  That's not the way I would draw it up.

I agree that Jon DeRock is going to be a heck of a player in the MIAC.  He's a tough match-up with his quickness and ability to elevate quickly.  I'm not impressed however with his defense, although most freshmen aren't good defenders.

Tough schedule as has been mentioned for Coach Wohler and his team the next couple of weeks.  Three conference games against what everyone is saying are the three best teams in the MIAC.  I'm going to try and make it to Gustavus next week, as it's not far from home.

South Dakota Gusties

The 4th annual MIAC Pick 'em contest is about to begin.  Hop over to the MIAC Pick 'em page, and get your picks in before the first tip off on Wednesday.

As I was throwing together my spreadsheet for the pick 'em league, I ran across this...

2/1/2006 (Wednesday)
Hamline vs. St. Olaf @ Metrodome, 7:30pm

Does anyone have any details on this game?  Why are they playing there?  That is a VERY large venue for one average team and one really bad team.

SDGusties - I have no idea why Hamline & STO are playing at the Dome.  Local or PI will have to chime in on that one.  It does seem rather odd to me.

Willy, Uncle Patrick has got a nice little writeup on one of the MIAC's own from the mid ninetes UST's Karnell James.

Carleton defeated Lake Forest College of Illinois 58-42 today.  The Knights are now 2-1 on the season I believe.  Tommy Drake leads the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  The box score shows that the total second half score was 19-18 for Carleton.  Slow down basketball?

Drake - I'm not sure why Hamline and St. Olaf are playing a game in the dome?  Next time I see or talk to the Hamline coaches I will ask them.

Speaking of Northfield basketball...what's going on over at Olaf? The roster lists 15 and I've heard they had trouble just getting that many out. There are only four upperclassmen on the roster, including two who've seen VERY limited action in their previous years. That leaves Butala, Nerd Bain and 11 freshmen or sophomores.

Losing upperclassmen like that (much like the GAC football team has in recent years) doesn't bode well for the future of any program...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Gotta love that Coach Koz.....he's the big time recruiter, isn't he?  He thinks he's a prime time coach...all he did for Clem was run his camps. Seems as if the "brass" at STO are only concerned about the football program. (what was the score of that SJU game again???!!!!)  ;)

MIAC game at Metrodome - I don't know if this is the actual reason or not, but I know a few years ago when the dome hosted the Final Four there were opportunities for MIAC teams to play game there but nobody wanted to give up a home game.  The dome personell use this as a way to get ready for NCAA Tourney Regional games that I believe the dome is hosting this year.

Well sadly football season is over for the Cobbers, so I will have to take my postings over to the basketball boards now.

Atleast the season is ready to really get rolling now, it should be a great winter.

Good wins for the Knights over the weekend against an above average Chicago squad and a sub-par Lake Forest team.  It appears that many of the problems from the Aurora game were remedied prior to the subsequent contests.

The Knights have an exhibition game tonight against the South Australia Sports Institute (SASI I think).  After back to back games this weekend, hopefully the starters will play minimally tonight to rest up for their big first MIAC game against St. Thomas.
