just heard a rumor that tubby has a certain influence over a kentucky mcDonald's HS all-american who could possibly play for the gophs...

Jai Lucas, a PG out of Houston, and Patrick Patterson, a PF out of W Virginia, were both being heavily recruited by Smith for more than 2 years when he was at Kentucky. Both are Top 20, blue chip recruits. There werent any McDonalds All Americans from the state of Kentucky this year, so Im presuming your info must be about one of these two players.

Patterson on possibly following Tubby to Minnesota: "Oh no, not at all. Theres not a chance of me going all that way. Too cold." Haha, he isnt tough enough to make it in the Big 10 anyway  :P.

As for Lucas, he hasnt ruled out Minnesota now that Tubby has the reins. "He told me the situation and the direction he wants to take Minnesota. It sounded good." The Gophers, however, are not on his short list of schools.

makes me wonder, who was the last non-mn all american to play as a gopher?

I dont know that, other than Rick Rickert in 2001, the Gophers have even netted a McDonalds All American. And, obviously, he was a home stater.

Snow - good question.  I'm assuming you mean high school AA as opposed to a college AA??  I don't have time to do the research, (but what makes me think Kneez will?  ;) ) My guess would be  Mark Hall, Darryl Mitchell & or Quincy Lewis. Of the 3 I mentioned, I think Mitchell is the only one that might have been a high school AA.

Not a bad track record down in St. Pete for assistant hoops coaches that have moved on -a head coaching position at Central College in IA, head coach at Eden Prairie high school, & now the head coach position at Dakota Wesleyan.

Sum- you'll have to let us know what happens with Driscoll at NDSSS over the next couple of years.  It'll be interesting to see how he develops.

One other comment about the new school additions to our rival D2 conference, the  NSIC.  You can be sure the NSIC coaches are going to be playing the - "kid, you'll be playing in the premier D2 conference in the country" card.  However, the "kid" will still have to prove his D2 ability.

EDIT: Kneez you posted before I finished typing my post... you  haven't found the answer?? I'd like to know myself.   :D

Here's another "home-stater" - Kris Humphries out of Hopkins was a high school AA.

Drake, Quincy Lewis was Player Of The Year in Georgia, but he did not make the prestigious team in 95. I thought he possibly was one, as well.

Also, Pryzbilla in 97 was a McDonalds All American, but he was another home stater.

Hey, my job is boring and monotonous, and Im in front of a computer 75% of the time. Researching stuff like this is inevitable, :D I spent about 10 minutes trying to find a list of all-time rosters for the McDonalds game participants, but was not successful.

i think both the gophers bball and football teams are going to have a couple of great recruiting classes....football already has 6 verbals for this next season...iowa doesnt have any yet and i know there are some iowa fans that are very angry about that...especially since the gophers got maresh because many thought he would probably end up at iowa

as for the basketball team i think tubby has a great chance of bringing in a mcD's all-american just for the simple fact that they can be the star of the team and start right away and i think tubby can bring em in

as for the miac...im suprised they havent had any McD's all-americans yet ;)

Hey fellas...

From what I heard Tubby and his staff were not in on any of the top 50 for this year...Kentucky was just not their first choice...So lets not put the cart before th horse, yes there is a nice buzz on for Minnesota basketball and Tubby is a step in the right direction, but lets see where this goes.  Besides if he wants a quick turnaround he will have to go to the JUCO ranks, because any Freshman he brings in will need time to develop...

BTW...good article in the St. Cloud Times about the J's football team re-loading with recruits...

Beat it by only a day! Here is a story from the Fargo Fool em on VanHavermaet signing with MSUM. He had considered CORD and U of Mary. I had also heard a rumor that NDSU had asked him to walk on.

The Daily Planet article VOJ talks about is here .

Kneez - after reading your post, something about it just didn't seem right.   ;) So I did a little research myself & here's what I found: Quincy Lewis was from Little Rock Arkansas, not Georgia.  While Lewis might not have made the McDonalds's high school AA team, he was named an Honorable Mention All American by Street & Smith as well as Blue Chips magazine. My source for this info was Gopher Basketball Rosters.  I still wasn't able to find out anymore about Darryl Mitchell.

Too bad the Haskins scandal occurred; a lot of player information was missing from the Gopher website.   I think it's a combination of removing the "tainted" records from the Haskins era & incomplete Gopher website archives.  For instance, they had no personal information on Bobby Jackson that I could quickly find.  Also, while skimming the Gopher site, another player I'd forgotten about was Willie Burton who might have been another high school All-American.

I tried doing a search of Parade All-Americans & the only archive information I could find was on the football teams.   Parade had football player information going back to the 60s, but I couldn't find anything on their basketball teams.

Drake, thanks for keeping me in line. I read Arkansas right off the NBA.com Bio on Lewis, and yet Georgia made it on the post. I think you missed one obvious Gopher who had the sterling high school credentials and decorated college career of a possible McDonalds All American..Hosea Crittenden. How does he not make your short list for guys to research?  ;D

VOJ, youre incorrect with the statement that Tubby and the staff at Kentucky werent in on Top 50 recruits. As my earlier post stated, Jai Lucas (a Top 10) and Patrick Patterson (a Top 20) were, and still are, serious about playing for the Wildcats. Kentucky is still #1 on Lucas' list, and #3 on Pattersons-according to Rivals.com. The Wildcats 2007 class is ranked 35th by Scouts Inc., even without commitments from those two, so obviously Tubby and his staff were bringing in some talent. His inability to bring a consistent stream of McDs All Americans to Lexington, a la UNC or Florida, is what the majority of Tubbys critics at Kentucky cited as a failure of his tenure. This looked like the season he might bring in the multiple studs the Wildcat faithful had come to expect over the years, and if those two recruits end up in Kentucky blue, that class will jump into the Top 10.

First Team All West Region and Fourth Team D3 All American Joe Werner, of UW-La Crosse, had a workout with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday. Anyone who saw UWL play this year knows Werner is a bit of an athletic freak, and his workout numbers were pretty good (4.78 40, 36" vert). Not that I think hell be drafted, or even invited to training camp, but it brought up an interesting question. Anyone in the MIAC with the physical tools to maybe have a similar experience?

I can't think of any MIAC hoopers who could possibly give it a go, but LAX's Werner was a specimen.  Cat had muscles coming out of his eardrums!

Sum - I think you mebbe right with your Lou Hudson guess.
