From Shooter:

QuoteJoe Scott, 6-foot-4 son of former Gophers guard Kelly Scott, is transferring from Colorado, where he made 59 three-pointers as a freshman last season, and could end up at the University of St. Thomas.

nca11

scott was a freshman last season at colorado-colorado springs, which is a division II school. he started all 28 games, averaging just over 10 points per game.  prior to that, he played at delasalle high school, where he was a major contributor on their 2006 state championship winning team.

Big difference!!

NCA11 - You're too kind. I realize it may appear that I've been browbeating reporters this summer -- but really!! Hartman & Walters in particular need to do a better job of checking their sources.

As soon as I saw Shooter's tidbit earlier today, I was immediately leery.  Joe Scott is a nice player but D1? Not exactly.  The Walters' blurb would lead the reader to believe he  played for the University of Colorado.   ::) NCA11 is right - let's try D2 University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.

Joe Scott played on a talented DeLaSalle team that won the state AAA HS championship in 2006.  The Islanders featured as their best player, Cameron Rundles who would receive a D1 scholarship & start for the University of Montana his FY year (who by the way knocked off the Gophers last year). In addition they had Jamar Diggs who played for D2 Wayne State in the NSIC & was selected Co-Newcomer of the Year during the past season.  Teddy Archer, a Tommie FY who sat on the UST bench last season also played for the DE Islanders.

NCA11 – it looks like Scott had a decent year at Colorado Springs, any idea why Scott's transferring? If the Tommies do land Scott & some of the other guards they recruited, they might be able to shore up what could still be a glaring weakness at the guard spot.

Scott, who played in the shadow of his high school teammates, Rundles & Diggs is a nice, athletic all around player who seems to do all the little things well.  I'll admit, the numbers he put up in his frosh year in college impressed me.  Although he's certainly a very solid player, I didn't think he had D2 type of talent.   Could we be hearing a Joe Scott - Mike Keating comparison in a couple of years?  If we do, it won't be from me.  ;)

when in doubt, double check anything that shooter or sid say.  sloppy is a word that could be used to describe their journalism, but that might be too kind.  the tommies recruited scott pretty hard out of high school, but he was really hoping to get a d-1 scholarship.  my guess is that he tried his hand at d-2, but decided he'd rather be close to home.  i'm very interested to see how the tommie roster plays itself next season - lots of new faces and talent, but will it all be ready and mesh by the start of the year?  my guess is a slow start, especially with their difficult non-conference schedule, and then a solid to strong finish in conference play.

on another note, that delasalle team might be my favorite high school team from the past few years.  rundles is a great kid and a warrior on the basketball court - i've never seen a kid with a bigger heart.  diggs is also a great kid and is having great success at wayne state.  plus they had scott, cedric mcbounds, and a young royce white.  quite the team.  i'll stop drooling now.

i like shooter...but only because over half the stuff he says is as pointless as the majority of my posts  ;D

Its been awhile and so I thought I would read what I had missed and then comment...

On Barry W...there were times when I felt he was really comfortable in that situation and then other times where he just seemed not overwhelmed, but maybe unsure of the team, the situation...I hope he does well in his next stop...

The question you should ask is:  "can someone win at Hamline?"

By the way I can echo others statements, Tyler Westman is not coming back, I am hoping Lieser still is and of course Brady Brink and Fogt are great building blocks, the J's should be in the top 3 in the conference.

Not surprised the Toms could come up with a big transfer...to help out...this team should take a major step back or am I wrong?

VOJ, Welcome back. The last word I had heard out of the Johnnies camp was Lieser is definitely coming back. Although two other players with eligibility left will not be coming out.

It will be interesting to see if Jim Hayes applies at Hamline and, if offered, would actually take the job. I've got to imagine he bears a little ill will to his alma mater after getting passed over for Wohler and my Carlie insider says Guy Kalland has begun grooming Hayes to take over. We could have an interesting situation on our hands, if that's actually the case.

As an aside to Woody, Kalland runs both the offense and defense at CAR, with the assistants left to pipe in when and where they can. The offense, while typically efficient, is even more methodical than at GAC; I remember Scotty C being told where to dribble on the court and exactly how many dribbles he had to do so. I can only imagine the beef you'd have with Kalland...

Yes, that's the sound of me relentlessly beating this topic to death :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

What "coy"?  Sum, that's not your style.   :o  ;D Share with the rest of your MIAC Posting Up brothas.

Off the top of my head, I would say Bethel would be the favorite for the league title next year followed by the Js.   That's assuming the 2 players that Sum mentioned aren't key parts of the lineup.

The Carlies, UST, GAC, & the Dawgs will be fighting it out for the remaining 4 playoff spots.   If the Cobbs can get some stability out of their guards, & a decent outside shooting threat, they "might" challenge for a playoff spot.

To protect the innocent, I won't name the former MIAC player who does a terrific send up of a Gustie guard mechanically going through their options before they make a pass. It's hilarious!  ;D

And by the way, it's only out of respect for the Gustie program & successes that I believe any of this lighthearted taunting has taken place.    ;)

I'm sure Willy doesn't mind the taunting. He's probably heard worse things in his day  :D

Sum – Kneez follows western WI HS hoops & he might be able to fill you in on Tyler Etheridge.

Etheridge is a very good all around player, and I think will be a premier guy in the MIAC towards the end of his junior year in Collegeville. Interested to see how the shoulder surgery affects him. Will be a nice 3 man, because he can hit from the outside and is very good off the dribble. Looks rail thin, but is deceptively strong. Top rate passer, which might be his best attribute. A Smith kind of guy, very fundamental and versatile. Extremely smart player, and passionate. Defense is average, but not a glaring weakness. And even though it may sound like I do, I dont actually have a man crush on him.

Kneez – I thought you might want to talk about a Tommie "40 Minute Run" by the big guy – Coach Fritz. That was a sweet video.  ;)

I guess thats the new thing, because it was always "grind it out". Quite a change of pace from the old UST recruiting tools. This ones glossy, hip, and relevant. They neglected to show any recent UST legends, which could bridge the past to the present without dating the video, and I think that omission diminishes the history of the program. A clip of a Buri crossover to pullup J in Buths face; Finns NBA+ 3 to send the 02 NCAA Tourney game to OT; a shot of me on the bench in my warmup suit with ice on my knees; you know, the things that people think of when they talk Tommie Hoops. A little history would have been nice, thats all Im saying.

Apples and oranges. Scott was a nice player in both high school and college, but Keating was a Mr. Basketball finalist and a D2 Frosh All American. People knew Mike would make an impact right away when he came to UST. While Scott would have a role next year should he transfer, I doubt purple backers are expecting that to be the missing piece between the Tommies being a borderline playoff team and a contender. I know thats not your position Drake, but theyre not even comparable IMO.

Real happy for Ike, I know thats something he really wanted. And Im glad he'll have an opportunity to continue his playing career in a place like Spain. Considering a lot of guys end up in places like Slovenia or the Philippines, you could do much worse than live and play ball where hes heading. Law school can wait  ;D.
