One down, 3 to go - Cobbers get their roll on

How is it one down, 3 to go when it's only SJU and HAM?

Besides UST, I can't think of two other MIAC rosters that I wanted to see a few weeks ago.

What, did you take your Wonka pills today?  My point was that there were four,  now three teams left that had not updated their rosters - Bethel, SJU & Hamline.

If your smarta$$ reply is that you don't care..  then I'll laugh myself silly when one of these anonymous teams proceeds to whump your Pipers' butts senseless. During the process, they look you up in the stands, & channeling their best Muhammed Ali yell in scorn -"what's my name chump?!?"  ;D

No smarta$$ from me...you just mentioned SJU, CON and HAM in your post and I forgot that I hadn't seen Bethel's roster either. My bad. And I meant to say two MIAC rosters that I wanted to see more a few weeks ago. I'm intrigued by what HAM has and what SJU got. Then again, we have seen many of the incoming SJU players in Frank's blog.

Among them is Townswick from Willmar, who I saw play once. Nice guard. Maniac, don't remember Hagemeyer for some reason.

All's good. In hindsight, I think I may have lead to some of your confusion when I replied to your post on Thursday PM.  I said --

Still no rosters for Hamline and St. John's  ::).  I know there is a new SID on Snelling, but come on, it's November. Nothing up for any winter sport.

I'm very intrigued to see the Pipers roster.

Nor the Cobbs, or Johnnies.  Like you I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what these 4 remaining teams will bring to the games this winter. ...

I meant to say or should have said - Royals.  My bad also-- it ruins or lessens the impact of my punchline.   ;D

*****
Mose - pretty heady comparision if you're comparing Mr. DeLaney to a certain Karnell James.  That would be sweet if it's true.

Interesting to note that the Cobbers probably have as many kids from the StC Times area as SJU does...and they landed Hagemeyer from Willmar. I'd assume PI might have seen him play-- a physical presence in the paint?

Maniac, Seen Hagemeyer play a couple of times. Nondescript would be the first word I would use to describe him. Those Willmar teams were Kyle Townswick and supporting cast! I would be surprised if Hagemeyer sees the court for the Cobbs this year.

After a quick skim of the Cobb's roster I noticed a couple of positive & negative things.  The Cobbs appear to have done a nice job of recruiting.  They got a handful of prized recruits in 6-6/6-7 swingman Darrin Olmscheid & 6-1 Pg/W Karl Olson of 2007 high school state champs, Buffalo.  From what I've heard, Olson could really push senior Anthony Boike for time at the PG spot.  That could be a good thing since taking caring of the ball was not one of the Cobbs' strengths last year.   Also, 6-4 Erik Lien from Moorhead is very nice player.  I'm not familiar enough with the other new players to comment.

On the negative side of the ledger a couple of conspicuous absences -- seniors Gavin Ganab, Eric Meischner & Brock Citterman. Also SofaKing's prized recruit –Brain Lebsock must have decided to return to the Montana plains or hang up the sneakers.  The biggest loss would seem to be Citterman who played much like the Dow Jones has done recently -- up & down.  However, the new recruits might help off set these personnel losses. You just hate to see college seniors not go out their senior year.

Size wise, looks like the northern Lutes will look alot like their Lutheran cousins in the south – the Gusties: a bunch of tall, rangy players between 6-3 – 6-7.  Time will tell if the Cobbs & Gusties have comparable talent.

This is weak sauce fellas!  The coaches release their Coaches' Pre-season Poll & we're still missing rosters from Bethel, Hamline & SJU.  And to boot, the Johnnies release their season preview & guess what - no flipping roster. ::)

1. Bethel (10)
2. Gustavus (1)
3. St. Thomas
4. (tie) Carleton
5. (tie) Saint John's
6. Augsburg
7. Concordia
8. (tie) Macalester
9. (tie) St. Olaf
10. Saint Mary's
11. Hamline

Now I understand the coaches' near unanimous pick of Bethel for 1st place (who picked against them?!?) but the Gusties 2nd & UST 3rd along with rest of the picks?? Mebbe the coaches had their student trainers fill out the ballots this year.  Sheesh  ??? ;)

I'm not sure if a coach can vote for his own team; most of them probably think its classier to vote for someone else. Sounds like the posting crowd is much higher on Olaf than those in the coaching circle; vice versa on Carleton.

SUM-- thanks...I only know Hagemeyer is big, and athleticism runs in the family, as his older bro was a 20-some time All American swimmer who had the build of a vicious post player.

This tells us who voted for GAC.  I'm very suprised by this poll.  If anything this points to an exciting season.

That is correct...coaches can't vote for their own team.

I couldn't stand the suspense anymore & took in my first college hoops game of the season.  ;D  It featured the Oles vs. the D2 Golden Bears of Concordia STP in an exhibition game on Saturday.  By the way, Concordia will also play SJU in another exhibition game this Saturday.  As expected, CSTP won the game 73-68, but it was closer than anticipated.  Although the final outcome was never really in doubt, CSTP had to put their starters back in the game & ran a full court press in the closing minutes to seal the victory.

CStp is going through a transition this year with the graduation of All NSIC performer Kyle Marxhausen of Rosemount (Cmob's younger brother's former HS running mate).  In the NSIC pre-season poll, the Bears are picked to finish 6th in the 10 team league.  However, CSTP did pick up a former D-1 player, Matt Cadwell, who transferred from South Dakota State Univ.  SDSU is in the 3rd year of transitioning from DII to D-1 status.

CSTP appears to be even more of a perimeter oriented team this year, with marginal size & height in the post.  The Concordia guards were larger & more athletic than the Oles at the guard spots, but the Oles had the advantage in the post.  Bobby Hunter & Mitch Haugen both played well, each scoring 16 points, with Hunter grabbing 7 boards & 6 boards for Haugen. In particular, Hunter did a nice job of passing out of double teams on the baseline to feed either Haugen or McMahon on the weak side.  6-8 Brady McMahon also looked relatively smooth & showed a nice jumper from the top of the key.  Outside shooting though for the Oles was less than stellar, with Chad Norberg going 0-7, & Mark Torell 1-4.  In fairness this was due in part to the athleticism of the Cord guards.  However, I don't think the Oles will be winning a lot of games by jacking up a bunch of jumpers this winter.

Based on what I saw Saturday, I expect this Ole team will be a MIAC playoff contender this season.  But it does appear they might be bothered by a pesky, quick team i.e. St. Marys', Augsburg & perhaps out-talented by a team with comparable interior height such as GAC, UST, maybe the Cobbs & for sure Bethel.

A little bird told me that while the SMU Redbirds haven't gotten any taller, they have a couple of FY guards that have some jets.

So the poles are out and i was wondering what everyone thought about how Augsburg was going to do this year. They look strong with only losing three seniors and still have Femi and that Jon Cassens kid, who in my opinion could one of the best point guards in the league and is going to be one of the best 3 point shooters agian this year. Also i was wondering if anybody has heard of this Scott kid who is going to play for the tommies, he is a transfer and i think he went to De La Salle high School; i saw him play this summer and he is pretty amazing. any thoughts? ???

Thanks for the CSTP/Ole report Drake. I will return the favor with some feedback from the MAC/MSU Mankato scrimmage yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised with how well MAC l competed with MSU Mankato. MSU "won" the first half by 10+ points with a big run against the second teamers and needed a tip in at the buzzer to "win" the second half by 2. My guess would be the MSU starters beat the MAC starters in the 3-5 point range. Based on my observations, look for 4 FY players to play in an 8-9 man rotation for MAC. They deliver the depth MAC sorely needed to be a playoff contender. Too early to make bold predictions, but I will say that if the MIAC coaches had seen MAC yesterday against MSU, my guess is that they would be picking them higher than 8th.

Note to Drake: Your man Colin Keeley has some skills. Needs to add some lbs., but has a nice touch and plays "long" in the post on defense. What Trey Mullen lacks in height at 6'3", he makes up in strength and skill. He will be a front court force in the MIAC and I will be surprised if he isn't an all MIAC FY team candidate.
