MIAC All-Name Team Part 1

The MIAC panel of Indo–European linguists & esteemed jury members has returned from their deliberation to present the findings of the 2007-2008 All MIAC Name team & honorary captains.  However, before we move on to the awards portion of this post, here are several interesting items the committee noticed during the selection process.

There is a boatload of freshmen that are currently on the rosters around the league.  Posters such as Mose who have followed the league for a longer period than I have could probably answer this question - - When was the last time the MIAC had 51 Frosh on varsity rosters?  This works out to be slightly over 4.6 freshmen per team.  Obviously, not all will start or see significant playing time, but to me, 51 is a surprisingly high number.  Which of course makes the work of the Naming committee that much more difficult, but we were up to the herculean task.  8)

Freshman Breakdown by team

St. Marys - 9
S. Johns - 7
Hamline – 6
St. Thomas  - 5
Augsburg - 5

Macalester - 4
Carleton  - 4
Concordia - 4
Bethel - 3
St. Olaf  - 2
Gustavus - 2

If Bethel didn't have the 3 transfers, I think they would also probably have 5-6 FY on their roster.  In the case of UST & the Johnnies, their high freshmen numbers are even more surprising, especially when you consider that both schools also field large JV teams.

So what do these numbers reflect – a changing of the guard, or a watering down of league talent?  This year, I would lean to the latter category, but one thing I do believe – the excitement & intensity level should be every bit as high as in previous years.

Drake, Nice work on the all name team! Tough to argue with any of your selections and their literary origins.

Couple of other observations:

Noticeably missing from the J's and CSP box score was Michael Stiller, So, Post for the J's. I expected him to eat up at least a part of Jason Fogt's minutes.

The 94 minutes logged by the Frosh for SJU is unheard of. In the last two years freshman have gotten exactly 11 minutes total playing time!

Brady Brink and Chris Schwartz getting 40 and 37 minutes of playing time! They are going to be worn out by Christmas time.

I wanted to note that Jason Weischedel Fy. G 6-0 Essex, Vt. Essex Junction dropped in a nice string of shots at the Carlton Scrimmage. It might have been the effects of his lucky headband but he is someone to keep an eye on.

Headband eh?? that doesn't sound very much like a coach Kalland type player...im suprised he was able to wear it...they have a strict headband, wristband, and facial hair policy at CAR...bobby schmitz had a beard in the picture on the link too...weird

my predictions

1. Bethel
2. S. Johns
3. St. Thomas
4. St. Olaf
5. Gustavus
6. Carleton
tie 7. Augsburg
tie 7. Macalester
9. Hamline
10. Concordia
11. St. Marys

Sum,

Keep in mind how last year's NCAA tournament team was built...two years of frustrating 8-17 with talented but learning youngsters...then an MIAC playoff appearance and finally a trip to the dance...time to re-load the pipeline...PMac and Foges has been doing a great job of recruiting...the results will be seen over the course of the season.

Oh and Stiller is still on the team but did not play in the last scrimage, that is all...

BETHEL34

A little Bethel news after the first few weeks of practice are through...JJ Palmer is looking to be a solid back up for Moberg this year.  He is a solid 253lbs that is tough to move in the paint.  I am told the back up role is his right now hands down.

!!!BREAKING NEWS!!!

Looks like we are going to see of lot of JJ Palmer on Saturday night of the Bethel Tip Off Tourny.  With the likely match up of Bethany and Bethel in the Championship game, Moberg will not be in attendance.  He will be attending his brothers wedding which is also that night...could be a tough blow for Bethel if they lose that game.  Would hate to look back at the end of the season and have that game be the possible reason they didn't make the Tourny.  That is of course if they happen to not win the MIAC Playoffs.  It is a good chance for Bethel to get some great experience playing with out him though...there could be many of times he is in foul trouble throughout the season where if they can play well without him and get a win, it would give them a lot of confidence knowing they can win with him not on the court.

Good, the Bethelites start to wake up from their slumber.  ;)  You gotta like JJ's last name.

How's Jeff Reck & the Hugoson kid look, & what happened to Max?

BETHEL34

You are right...You can't go wrong with Palmer.  But the JJ makes the Palmer that much better.   ;)

Hugoson is looking real good from what I hear, but I haven't gotten a chance to see them play yet.  Just from talking with some of the players and coach on Sat, I got a little of the info I just shared.

I was really surprised to not see Max on the Roster...that is a big blow for Bethel as he would have made a great impact off the bench for them this year.  Luckily they are solid at the wing position...but he would have been instant offense coming off the bench.  I will definitely dig and figure out why he didn't come out this year.

Haven't heard anything about Rec specifically...

Developing... ;)

Get some help son...please check yourself in to professionals to handle the drug problem you seem to have...If I were Trewick I would play someone else...they asked the J's to play and they said no way...one trip to Winona per year is enough.

Well considering i'm kidding, but being serious at the same time.... I don't need any help

Why turn down the chance to play the number 1 ranked Div. II team in the nation? I would be pissed if I played for the "J's".  (1) you get to play in a great environment (2) theres always the what if factor (as you may recall two years ago when they won the national championship mary's only lost by 13).  Maybe I'm wrong though, i guess i'd much rather play st. cloud state  ::)

Besides Mary's has to play em', it's the battle of the rock baby!

Can Bethel win a playoff game?

Inconceivable!

I'd imagine it has something to do with this post on the football board. Apparently the Royals don't appreciate classic movies lines...
