speaking of SJU...they stepped up big time tonight against Morris, clubbing them 81-65...Morris was up 42-35 at half, but SJU shalacked Morris in the 2nd, doubling them up 46-23...Sam Blank led the Johnnies with 19 on 7-7 from the floor, including 4-4 from 3 and 1-2 from the stripe...13 for Lieser and Brink and 11 for Schwartz...UMM was led my Will Jenson with 20 and Phil Allen with 19...great line for Aaron Burtzel tonight for SJU...didn't start, but had 4 points, 10 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals and 0 turnovers in 33 minutes...8 guys with double figure minutes for SJU
and Fogt was a factor ---8pts 4 boards 2 steals 3 blocks in 15 minutes of action

D3BO - Wittwer has to play consistent in every game, or at least the majority of games.

totally agree Drake...so far Wittwer has been inconsistent at best...but in the 6 or 7 games I have seen him play in he has stepped up big time, especially in the big games...I would expect nothing less this year

Carlies boxscore is up, but no game story yet.  No Tommy Drake for the Knights, but they still win with one of last year's All- Name Players -  Morris  Nwogwugwu, admirably filling in. Morris gets 10 points, 2-2 from the 3-pt line, 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal in 30 minutes of work.  Nice job by him & the rest of the Knights.   Zorro leads all scorers with 21 points, 7 rebs, & 3 assists.

Wittwer's inconsistencies this year have been mostly due to foul trouble. He hasn't been on the court enough to be consistent.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Gusties beat Bethany Lutheran 88-76.  Wittwer with 25 points (19 in 2nd half) & 10 rebs.

And sporting a new 'do-- the Marine cut appears to be in vogue on the GAC team (No cornrows this year, for sure). Solid all-around game by TW, some lights-out shooting from Sivesind and nice stretches of "traditional" GAC defense ... all in all, a fun game to watch

Drake didnt play due to surgery to repair a broken nose. He should be back & 100% by next MIAC game, so it was good timing for the surgery

95-38 Bethel over North Central.

Oh my....for North Central's sake I hope that score was posted wrong!! That is a butt kicking.

As for SJU:
Nice second half comeback! Down 7 at half and come out double up Morris in the second half. Sam Blank is another freshman that apparently can shoot.....who knew! What's the deal with Leiser... 6-15 on FG and 0-6 from 3pt land??? I think this is a big win for the J's. 29 bench points tonight is pretty close to what they have scored in the previous 6 games combine!! This could be a dangerous team if everyone stays healthy.

At least Bethel didn't break any NCAA records.

---If you didn't catch the story- Grinnell made a premeditated effort against North Central to break the all-time single game assist record, and they succeeded with 34 assists for the Coach's son in something like a 150-110 game.

No mistake. Here is a link to the box score and stats: http://athletics.bethel.edu/sports/mbball/2008/stats/ncu-mbb.htm#GAME.BOX

Bethel could have run up the score it they wanted. I was happy to see they kept up the defensive intensity all game long.

+k - nice photo Watch!

Say, what's the latest on Fogt?  I understand he's not available for the game against Morris tonight, but is he still expected back by the first of the year, or the holiday tourney?
I don't know why people are so hung up on Fogt.  He is not that good.

I don't think Fogt gets enough credit. Last year he shot 56% from the floor and 75% from the line. In my opinion, he should have seen a lot more minutes than he did. He is a solid defender, above average on the boards and plays with abandon. I saw him set some picks last year that rattled peoples teeth.

Good to see him back in the J's line up last night. He changes the character of the J's. Teams will have to respect his inside presence which in turn should open things up on the outside.

Drake - Can categories still be added to the post-season award presentations?
Consider adding, "Team Most Likely To Cause PDF"  (and that would be Public Display of Frustration, or "going Foster" as one poster called it.)

We've covered the Carr incident but there's another that flew under the radar this week.  A little bird told about the intentional foul that was called in the final minute of OT in the Saints / Pipers game.  HU had battled back from an ugly deficit to force the OT.  One of the Saints apparently earned the foul by pretty much throwing Piper Luke Anderson to the floor.  Anderson made one of the two free throws, the Pipes got the ball and came away with a close win.

Maybe this influenced the final outcome of a close game?  Maybe not, given the momentum at that point.  In any case the frustration couldn't be missed.  Let's hope he completes his upcoming anger management class.

The funny thing is that Anderson is the poster child for long & lean and a stiff wind could probably have the same effect...
Is is March Madness yet?

Drake - I've never heard or seen that name before. I'm getting old.

Hasse was a sophomore D2 transfer from Rockhurst in Kansa City.  He played ball at Mankato West and was on the Gustie roster for all of a week.

C'mon, you didn't know this? It's official - the golden age of the Gusties is over.  ;)
