Name to watch for: Pierre Harris - new point guard out of Henry Sibley for Hamline. He played some tonight - scored four points.

88-84 win for Piper Nation. Clute for 40. Kujo had a couple of second-half dunks.

Northwestern has a very nice squad and was a great test for Hamline. Throughly enjoy the yearly battle.

Excited to see WXYZ's pictures tomorrow. Saw him shooting Brandon Hayes' clinching free throws.

HAM 86, NWC 84 :20 left .... Clute for 40 so far

I love the Hamline webcast. Hard to beat it, especially when I'm sitting on my couch 90 minutes away.

How many bandwagons can one person ride?  Yazz Flute ends up with 40 crumbs.  Nice to see Baron Zev get out of the doghouse.

Off the Vikings ship, never was on the McLovins and I wait until playoffs for the Born to be Wild. Gopher hockey is terrible, so all I have are the Pipes. We need something to cheer for. We've been longing for a start like this in any sport.

Nah, I was actually poking fun at myself - I'm on the Scots, Tommies, Dawgs, Pipes wagons etc.  I had to run out during most of the 2nd half to your old stomping grounds Highland area - how did Zev look?

How is the old gal doing?

Zev had a few nice dunks and an alley-oop. He might be in the mix again.

I agree on seeing Zev get it going.  I was following it on the Web, however it was challenging to see those slams with some text HU webcasters have across the screen right over the basket.  However, the announcer was very good & made up for the video.  I am a bit curious about how Whitmore is handling the inside game.  Hipp seems to be sliding into a freshman slump.  He has 6'3" Kwame Herzog playing back up post tonight as he did against St. Scholastica...guarding their biggest man & picking up two quick fouls.  He seems to love Tanner Anderson, who is an okay player.  Brad Brake is buried on the bench never to be found & that Whitmore can't seem to figure out how to leverage the size of Erik Gusaas (I think Drake earlier referred to him as Nasty Inside Brusier or something like that), who if I recall correctly had some big games after the Foster exit late in last season.   The kid seems to take up a lot of space inside particularly on defense...so, I don't get it.  Is he simply a guard lover or no experience with real big men or both?  Regardless, the Pipers battle back to pull another one out with exceptional scoring by Clute & a little dunking exhibition by Zev!
Is is March Madness yet?

Some notes from the box:
* Brandon Hayes has turned into a player Whitmore is in love with - 30 minutes
* Hamline led by 10 with eight to go
* Mike Anderstrom from NWC was t-ed up
* 13 Pipers played again - three for four minutes or less
* Thrasher had nine points on 11 shots

Anybody know what to expect from the Harris kid? Never saw him in high school.

No Auggie score just yet, but it looks like the Gusties kept things rolling out east.  They beat UMass-Boston, 73-66.  Wittwer had 16 and Van Sickle 15.

Wasn't able to make it down for the Piper game, but it sounds like another dandy.  3 weeks off and Clute still has it going!  40 points on 22 shots is pretty darn efficient.  As for Carl Hipp slumping, I wouldn't call it that.  It's hard for most freshmen to remain consistent, but he had 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 16 minutes.  Not too shabby if you ask me.  For the season he's averaging nearly 13ppg and 6rpg.

PI - The Harris kid from Sibley is a nice player.  If I remember, a physically strong guard with a lot of quickness.  Not very tall though.  Sibley has been a solid program the past few seasons producing a few college prospects each season.

Not being too familiar with how things work in the MIAC but being very familiar with how Coach Whitmore functions, I'm going to chime in after a long hiatus. His style at Brockport and I would assume at Hamline is up and down (though I haven't seen them play). He needs players that can get up and down. If someone can't get up and down, he won't play them very much if any at all. He will sacrifice size for speed and quickness if it is necessary. His former player at Brockport, Brandon Williams, is a perfect example of that. A 6'2" center that did a heck of a job last year during the NCAA tourney. Just ask the Oklahoma Sooners football squad about that philosophy right now.

He has had plenty of quality big men including several all-conference players (Alex Smith, Brandon Mills, and Brandon Williams) and three All-Americans (Mark Wadams, Mike Medbury, and Charlie Croff). Though I have never seen Gusaas play I would assume that he isn't exactly the creme of the crop. He is 6'10" and playing D3. No knock on D3 (Guilford's got a great 6'10" guy), but generally speaking if you are 6'9" or taller and not playing with a scholarship chances are you aren't very good.

And by the way, the Pipers have won 5 of their last 6. Not too shabby for a coach unfamiliar with the conference. They were picked to finish last in the league and they are going to be alright.

AO

Pretty sloppy game tonight at Sutton.   2 steals quickly followed by turnovers in the last minute by Northwestern.  Though I should assume that the charge called on  Discher with 12 seconds to go was another terrible call (ala giving abe free throws with a second to go a couple nights ago).

Give credit to the the pipes for finding Clute on the offensive end regularly.  When he came out, the hamline offense struggled.

I don't know how it is that NWC is losing more games the season after I leave.  ??? We sure look more talented than we did a year ago, and the teams we've lost to look less talented than they did in previous years.   Senioritis?

Best of luck to Hamline the rest of the year, would be fun to seem them make some noise in the playoffs.

SQ - you've got Whitmore's style pegged.  From what I can tell he doesn't necessarily want to give you "40 minutes of hell," but just physically wear the other team out.  This is why 9 games into the season he's still playing 13 guys in a 4 point win.  Plus, I got the sense a couple of players might have been in his doghouse from the holiday break.  Erik Gusaas is a good athlete, but he's nowhere near as quick as the FY post Carl Hipp.

Local - you must have a better memory than me, because Pierre Harris wasn't even a blip on my radar screen.  I think I saw Sibley play twice last year, & his name didn't even ring a bell.  Last year's 20 win Sibley team featured Phil Haig, who got a football scholie to Illinois, the Halvorsen brothers, Anders, who is now a FT at UST, & Chris who is a senior this year.  In addition, they had PG Peter Leslie, (older brother Dan plays baseball for UST), & a couple of wings, whose names escape me.  They were definitely 6 feet or taller though.

Sorry AO, I've heard it takes 2 -3 questionable ref calls to offset one terrible non goal tending call.  ;) I think things should be just about even by now, & I wish your NW Eagles a good conference season.  You've got a nice club.
