TommieHoops4Life, if you don't like Northfield teams and covering them then find a new job. Nothings worse than hating aspects of your job. Also, they have a post player, might not be a big, just just as strong. He isn't always a present because he is also a threat to shoot from the outside. He will be above the others in scoring when he is all said and done.

Basketballover,

If you knew ANYTHING about journalism, you would realize your comment is probably the dumbest thing you could have said there. I obviously like my job. I'm not one of those guys that sits in a cube for 8 hours a day and calls it satisfactory. In fact, I'm on here at this ungodly hour because I just got home from producing a sports section. I'm not a "fan" of Carleton or Olaf because, regardless of the fact that I didn't go to either college, it would be a blatant conflict of interest. Ask WW or PI if you need confirmation on that. Journalists aren't fans, and that's a philosophy I'll always hold.

I personally wouldn't consider Johnson or Rosett post players, they're forwards who can back down less-skilled defenders. Moberg is a post player, Fogt is a post player. There, that's my definition. I guess Al McCoy kind of refutes my entire point, but I'm too tired to care right now.

WW,

No worries, not going anywhere immediately. Staying through next football season, then it's time to move on.

For the sake of MIAC credibility and teamwork let's hope this is just a bump in the road and not roadkill.  The stats from the W last night look like the guys are playing as a team again, the minutes were distributed among enough guys that they weren't gassed in OT and Whitmore is directing his rage toward the refs

Sometimes that's ok.

Most of the coaches in the MIAC have been around a long time. Look at Smith he's coming up on his 100th year pretty soon I think.  ;D I have seen most if not ever coach blow up a time or two at these refs. Now imagine being a first year coach and having The Asian Sensation ref one of your games!!  ;D  I'm not sure I would make it through the game without being tossed!!

TH4L- On the topic on Post Players,I agree with your assesment of Moberg and Fogt as post players, but  I would say Rosett is much closer to post player than "Zoro" a.k.a "Goose" a.k.a Zach Johnson.  I would define Johnson as a Shooting Forward. Leads the team in shots attempted- 208 (That is 70 more than Rosett :o), he's third in 3's attempted with 52, and leads in FTA with 92. He shoots the ball alot but I really feel like he doesn't have a great inside game. He's a great player but I really question his shot selection inside alot of times. I've seen him put up some pretty crazy shots when he's had his back to the basket in a one-on-one situation.

EDIT: Happy Birthday to Luke Linz. Could be a big night for him. J's better be ready!!!

I see nothing wrong with a biased sports journalist.  It might be a problem if you happen to be covering two competing programs like the carlies and oles, but nevertheless you can be a fan while still putting logical and fair content into your articles.  There's nothing wrong with a completely unbiased reporter, but they are few and far between, and generally aren't as much fun to read as the biased ones.

ps--think I found out why Bethel fell to the Auggies by double dig..--was watching the news on nbc and Eric Perkins of Perk at Play helped sing the national anthem--he was purposely awful and disrespectful and the Bethel players looked annoyed........plus, augsburg is better than you think.

I love this time of Year Part 2

A Trey, a Trey, for the loss of a Trey, a playoff spot was lost for the Macalester Scots.

On a team with as little depth as MAC, they could ill-afford to lose a live-body in the middle that the first semester FY wunderkund Trey Mullen filled for MAC.  Having his presence allowed Tom Conboy to show some of the discipline in his game that had been missing in the past.

Now after the holiday break, we're starting to see some of those bad habits creep back into TCons' game – the forced shots, ill-advised treys & slow to develop kick-outs when he feels the double-teams coming.  Conboy's game has progressed a lot from the time he first stepped foot on the Mac campus 4 years ago.  It's too bad Macalester couldn't recruit & retain one more high-quality post player to ride coach with him and Abe this season.  The Scots could have been contendas.

You couldn't be more right here, DP. Many times last night Conboy just stood around and watched Abe (wouldn't you though?). I mean, if you have a guy that can pentrate the lane like Abe does, turn into Dean Garrett, and sit next to the hoop and put in a slam or layup off a dump pass.

Instead, Conboy throws up threes, catches the ball at the top of the lane, dribbles a few times and than looks for the pass. For a guy with his size and ability, want the ball more.

MAC has three solid players: Conboy, Ranswick and Abe. That Ham...something kid had a nice night last night, but outside that nobody did that much. They really had no other big men off the bench.

A little help for TC would be nice.  I might give him my vote for POY, if only out of sympathy.  Consider these stats:

MAC is being outrebounded this season by an average of 10.1 boards a game.

Since the first of the year, Conboy is averaging 13.1 rebounds a game.

Since the first of the year, Conboy is pulling down 46% of MAC's rebounds (92 of 200)

Since the first of the year, the highest single game rebound total for any other player on the team is 5 (1 time), and the next highest is 4 (accomplished only 4 times)

It's pretty easy to see why MAC is 0-7 in 2008.  DP, I think you're dead on about the loss of the Trey.

I know I went off on this a little bit yesterday but I would sooner give Conboy the MIAC MVP rather than Madson at Bethel...Conboy may not always make the smart play but he does more for the Scots than Madson does for the Royals, and after watching Abe W....tear it up against SJU I would say he was more impressive than Madson....

You could say the same things about Brady Brink or Luke Linz...the difference they have over the other two is that their teams are winning in connference...Gustavus has Wittwer and he is a viable candidate and I guess if I had to pick one guy from UST it would be Scott...Zorro also enters into the discussion, depends on how they do in the second half...

... and don't forget about Will Wright.  SMU would still be winless if he hadn't poured in 31 points against the Oles.    ;)

AO, I couldn't agree with you more. WOW, I didn't think people would take my comment so literally. Of course no one likes everything about their job, but they still do it. Just thought it was odd covering sports in a city where you don't like the two main teams. Along with that, everyone on here is biased, they like who they like and put everyone else down. I guess it's different when it's your job and personal life.

big_shocker

Nites- Those stats were fantastic. As a former big man, I know the importance of rebounding, and should Conboy get hurt, get into foul trouble, or just have a bad day, MAC will lose the battle of the boards. Maybe they will not be the surprise pick to make a late run at the playoffs.

No one has any examples of teams coming out of nowhere to earn a playoff spot? Being a biased GAC guy, I can only remember my own school's past, which did not include any late rushes to make the final spot in the playoffs.

Reporter: Charles, is there anything about the incident you regret?

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

DP - Based upon the team performance on Monday it doesn't appear that Mutiny on Hewitt is the case, but your historical reference was impressive.  +K!

Rather, these guys will all have their own answers to the ever-popular job interview question, "Tell us about a situation that you had to handle adversity."  Life's lessons come in many forms.

basketballlover - i don't feel like i am biased.  I want ALL the MIAC teams to lose to Hamline equally.  I don't want one to lose more than the other, I want them ALL to lose to the pipes.  What is biased about that.  ;D

im biased towards stuff

Shocker -- just to heighten the drama around the league playoff race, I'd love to see a team such as Augsburg or Mac run the table in the 2nd half.  The most unlikely team would be SMU.  At this point, I'd say they're sitting on the old proverbial "ice cube's chance in hell" odds.

Mose could probably dig up the type of stat you're looking for.  It would be interesting to know how far back a team has come from to sneak into the playoffs. Mose any idea?

I dont have my stone tablets with me, but I remember Hamline going on a tear a few years ago (Jerome W was their PG, and this his Jr year, I believe) to rocket from10/11 to the playoffs (or they missed by a game)... also, Olaf has done the Lazarus routine a couple times in the past 10 years, sneaking in as the #6
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Someone earlier questioned my Madson for MVP comment earlier...

If Bethel finishes as a play-off team...there is no-way Madson isn't MVP:
He is the only one to appear in 7 of the 10 categories listed above...
While playing less minutes than Conboy, Johnson, and Brink (why don't whittwer and linz play more?)...
He gets guarded closer than any of the others on this list (then you say his assists should be higher...Only Johnson has him beat in that category)...

I don't even like the award that much...but now I am fired up...Madson for MVP! (and he will be the MVP next year as well!!!)

I went a little overboard last night Basketballover. Blame that on a 12 hour day and a very busy night. We small town sports guys don't make enough money to not like our jobs. I love what I do and enjoy covering the local teams, I just don't cheer for them to win.

I'm done with that, I've been on here long enough to know this board is about hoops. I also like the new colors on here, makes it easier to look at. I'm intrigued to see what happens around the MIAC tonight.

Wow...that turned out crappy.   ???
