Some posters sure didn't have problems calling for Barry Wohler's head over at Hamline & he even managed to get the Pipes into the playoffs one year.

Well, these are slightly different circumstances. Last time I checked, Trewick and staff hadn't gotten wasted at a local establishment and yelled at the top of their lungs that they were the best ****ing coaches in the MIAC for all to hear. That kind of creates some pressure to live up to your own lofty standards...

How long was crazy man Biebel at SMU before Trewick stepped in? I'm pretty sure he was there at least 6 years and I don't think they ever went anywhere...

I don't doubt this story of your's may very well be true, but what's with the kid glove treatment of Trewick?  Even longtime Coach Siverson at Concordia who has had a solid, but certainly not spectacular men's coaching career, has taken more random flak than the underperforming Birds of Coach Trewick at SMU.

drake in response to your eralier post rohr and cormier are both done and the cards don't seem to distraught over it from what i hear!!!

Skibbity???

word has it smu put in a new defense and offense after their embarrassing loss to the tommies? i heard some major reconstruction is going on in winona???
and why aren't they reconstructing the coaching staff? hasn't it been long enough?

There has been major construction going on in Winona since Trewick got there!  :D This is not a knock on Trewick at all. He's in a tough situtation down there and hopefully he can turn it around and make some progress towards the end of this year.

i hope trewick eventually gets that ship righted.  he seems like a pretty good guy.
any medical update on the M*A*S*H unit out in the country?

Super – From the rumblings I've been hearing, the MASH unit had to refer one of the cases to specialists to address the overall symptoms the patient was exhibiting.

Some of the symptoms displayed: "malaise, agitation, lack of focus, & general disinterest in scholarly endeavors."

I'm pretty sure "kid gloves" is not the right term. I spoke with Trewick a year or two ago about the recruiting situation and it sounds like a difficult place to carve out a niche. The location, fairly unique religious affiliation, lack of recent success and inability to also play football (the reason I ruled SMU out of consideration right away) are major stumbling blocks. I've got to imagine the reality of being the clear second-fiddle to WSU in all things athletic only adds to the difficulty.

Where is SMU supposed to recruit from? Rochester is already heavily recruited by GAC and STO and how many cities kids do you know who want to leave that setting for a comparatively po-dunk town where bars close at 1 a.m.? Four of the best female athletes in my nine-school coverage area — which is roughly 45 minutes from Winona — immediately ruled out SMU because of its location and size, despite it being 3-10x the size of their home town. SMU has bus after bus of Chicago-area kids visiting based on the religion tilt, but convincing those players SMU is the right fit for them would seem like an extremely time-consuming chore.

Instead of being able to specifically recruit guys who will "buy in" and "fit your system," I've got to imagine you'll take most anyone with a lick of talent who will consider your school. Only Concordia has a comparable recruiting roadblock, though I'd argue SMU's situation is at least twice as difficult. Based purely on this hypothesis, one can't help but wonder if this has played a part in the current problems involving Rohr and Cormier.

If the facts above mean I've shown more compassion toward Trewick's travails than Wohler's incessant chest-beating charade (while playing with his predecessor's players, no less)...can you blame me?

That said, I wonder if Trewick has tried talking Doug Lubbe — SMU's all-time leading scorer — out of retirement yet? He might not have any cartilage left in his knees, but there's a good chance he'd still be able to step in and start right away :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Drake,

Oh, I see.    And do the 'doctors' feel that he has a chance to improve anytime soon?

You say "potato", I say "potatoe."  IMO, Trewick's getting off easy.  And be assured, I have no dog in this fight, or no axe to grind.  As I've said before, even Siverson has gotten more flak than Trewick.  One of the last articles that Sum posted noted how the Cobbs had languished near the bottom of the league standings for years.   What, did Trewick buy your silence with some Mountain Dew or some Mike & Ike's?  ;)

I'll concede the football argument, lack of recent basketball success, but what's with the "unique religious affiliation?"

SMU is Catholic - LaSallian or something like that right?  I can't imagine its' too far off the mainstream Catholic path.  Sean Sweeney as you well know, attended UST, a very mainstream, & some would say secular Catholic university, while his younger brother Mike is at SMU.  As far as I know, SMU is not a Catholic version of the Lutheran synod – Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran, which is very conservative.

Location - you'll get no argument out of me that its difficult to recruit to the southern MN, WI, & IA river town colleges. But, many of those colleges have been successfully recruiting out-state kids for a number of years.  Winona State is a good example with John Smith coming from a Chicago suburb, Jontae Flowers from Cottage Grove WI, (which I believe is a Milwaukee suburb) and Quincy Henderson from Madison WI.

Further south in Dubuque IA – Loras, another Catholic school has been successfully recruiting from the same areas as SMU - the greater Chicago land area & Catholic preps.  Last year, Loras won the IIAC & scared the mess out of the Johnnies in the opening round of the NCAAs.  This year they're currently in 2nd place in the IIAC and check this out:  Seven, or 8 if you count the player from across the river in Galena, IL on the 16-player Loras roster are from the state of Illinois.  I'm not 100% on the towns' locations,  but I believe most of the IL towns listed on the Loras roster are either Chicago suburbs, or not too far from the Chicago metro area.

In fact the top 4 scorers for Loras are from the Greater Chicago area –

White, Kyle..15.4 (Antioch, IL)
Kolze, Ricky.13  190  14.6 (Palatine, IL)
Slater, Luke.12.4 (McHenry, IL)
Centella, Brian.12.3 (Grayslake, IL)

One point I will readily agree with you is that for several years there was a very vocal Wohler bandwagon here on the board.  So if that created additional animosity, I certainly  understand some of the board sentiment & Wohler backlash.  And at times, I too was questioning Wohler.  Likewise, I don't believe Coach Trewick should be excused from at least a closer examination.

I'm not sure Supe.  There seems to have been a quarantine placed on the general area, so there's been very little news coming in & out of the area.  I trust the poor lad will be able to successfully respond to treatment.   :D

SUMMIT!!!!!

SMU is run by the Christian Brothers, the same order that runs (or ran) Cretin and a few HS in Chicago-land (not to be confused with the brandy)
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Well it has been a slow evening, so I was wondering what people think about the Carelton vs. Concordia tomorrow. Game of the day? If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Concordia. I really like how tough with the cobbers play, and there depth is a huge advantage. I feel like this is a match-up nightmare for carelton because Concordia is so tough inside, I feel Carelton will have to become a jump shooting team and that isn't there strength. Don't get me wrong, the knights have good shooters, but I don't think that they have a team that can win a game by purely hitting from the outside. I think the second time around will be a lot tougher for the knights from carelton. I think they could slide as far as fifth in the standings with the Johnnies bringing up the sixth spot.

VOJ

Sparty...interesting observations and some good points, I saw the Cobbs play wed and they were D-ing up well, I was very impressed and their freshman are really developing...They will be a tough matchup for anyone else the rest of the way...
