At one point, they had eleven consecutive days when the nighttime lows dropped below -0!! Three times the temperatures dropped below -20.  That's chilly.

It keeps the rif-raf out though! ;)

Here is the game story on the Johnnies win over the Redbirds. Brief mention of Lieser's woes in the story. Frank the Tank has a quote from Lieser in his blog!

And now if the F-M area could keep the riff-raff out of the women's locker room.    ::) But don't worry, we have plenty of those sad stories here in the cities. Almost makes one want to move Moorhead - Not.  ;)

Hmmphh- internship credits eh?  Oooh, ok.  ??? ;)

Somehow this reminds me of the old Beach Boys song Sloop John B. Johnnies ship getting ready to head back out on the high seas.  ;)

From Franks blog...

OK, on to today's games. I was at Sexton Arena where the St. John's basketball team defeated St. Mary's 75-61. The Johnnies were playing without senior wing Ryan Lieser for the second game in a row. Lieser is sitting out while he attempts to resolve a credit situation regarding an internship he completed.

"Basically what happened is I thought I had my credits in order," Lieser said. "But it turns out I was short two. I have the work done for the credits I need. I just have to get it approved."

Lieser hopes to get the situation resolved in time for his team's game at Carleton Wednesday

Its a crappy situation...too bad Ryan has to miss games in his senior season because of a small technical screw up...so now the cat is out of the bag and everyone has an idea of what is going on...Ryan is a great kid, he deserves better than this...

First things first...

Paulson played until the first whistle of the first half and immediately went to the end of the bench when he was subbed out. He did not return. It was around one minute of play, no matter what the box says. He's battling a bad back and would seem to be very questionable for Wednesday's big battle with Moberg and the Royals. GAC's performance without him would seem to cement his status on Drake all-improved team.

Femi absolutely destroyed GAC's three backup posts with 1-2 hard dribbles to his right shoulder (called for charge once, could have been a few more) and a little spin back to his left for a right hook. He did the same move roughly 95% of the time and no one ever figured out how to stop it. Frustrating...and not boding well heading into play against the (alleged) best post in the league.

No one else did much offensively for Auggie Tech...but they didn't really have to. The other four starters combined to shoot 9-24, though GAC allowed many to pad their stats by fouling for the final 2 minutes.

GAC struggled offensively. Wittwer could get any shot he wanted, but forced a few. He also missed three straight bunnies with about 5 minutes left that would have cut the lead to three (I think). Instead, he missed them all and Tech went on a little spurt from there to regain command.

The refs also allowed it to become a very physical game. This benefited Auggie, who did a lot of clutching and grabbing to slow the Gustie offensive movement.

Interesting stat in the Gustie program yesterday...when Van Sickle scores double figures, GAC is undefeated. Now, all four losses have come when he doesn't. He's shot 9-33 in those games.

VOJ - WTF couldn't you share that info about Lieser? It's hardly earth-shattering.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I was getting a little worried about you Willy & thought maybe you weren't going to man-up & post a post-game summary. Good job.

If the Royals continue to play like they did against Hamline, your Gusties might still be ok.  I was at the Bethel/Hamline game yesterday & here's an excerpt from a follow-up PM/email  exchange.  I cleaned up some of the opining on my part.

I think Bethel plays XXX. They should have buried Hamline today but IMO, they had a poor game plan.  Whenever UST or Gustavus has the lead in the latter stages of a game, they make the other teams come out & chase them, get to the FT line, get layups or dunks.  Bethel is getting no fouls called on Hamline, they're shooting jumpers & keeping Hamline in the game.  Moberg had 8 lousy touches for the game.

...Today's game is a classic example.  9 out of 55 shots went through the post, a lousy 18% when you arguably have the premier post player in the league. He should be getting as many touches as Isaac Rosefelt did at UST. That's a shame.

As for the SMU situation...

Trewick was not in the final three in consideration for the GAC position. Having talked to many people about this opening over the summer, I'd be VERY surprised if Trewick actually applied since his name never came up. But I can't imagine there being anything illegal about it, if he did.

People came to SMU as basketball players, decided not to stick it out for four years for various reasons...and this is Trewick's fault? This is an extremely weak argument IMO. I'll use personal examples to debunk this alleged fault of SMU's head man.

I came to GAC with, probably, one of the deepest recruiting classes in school history. I was one of three freshmen to see significant time right away and we dressed 6/7 on varsity. SMU currently starts 2 frosh and has 8 on varsity.

I'm pretty sure GAC's JV team did not lose a game in our first two years. Multiple all-conference players — outstate and metro — played on the squad. We started with around 20-25 in the class and graduated with 5, which is extremely high. The previous three years, Gustavus had graduating classes of 3, 2 and 2.

If we're going to continue having this conversation about Trewick, it'd be nice to know what exactly was said/done by the captains to merit the dismissal. Otherwise this is all just idle musings by uninformed hacks :)

Cormier went in for a short meeting and coach's told him hes had a bad attitude.  Wouldn't you if you were a leader on a 1-14 team??  Talking to the players, nothing was out of ordinary.  And as far as bad attitudes....theres been players that have done much worse things that I'm sure cormier has, such as players throwing there jersey and walking out on their team mid-game, and players walking out during practice, but they continue to be on the team.  Maybe I am wrong and you're right, but i'm just saying not only my opinion, but the opinion of mostly all the players on the team.

WW- During your sophomore year, the JV team lost one game, at SJU. But that was it.

Reporter: Charles, is there anything about the incident you regret?

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

Didn't get a chance to attend a conference game yesterday as I was out of town visiting friends.  Thanks to everyone for those lovely recaps.  ;D

I just got done checking out the MIAC standings.  It looks like barring a major collapse that UST, GAC, and Carleton are all in the playoff picture.  The Johnnies and Cobbers both need solid finishes to remain in the mix.  Bethel is so up and down that I won't even try and predict where they will finish.  Those 6 teams would be in, if the season ended today.  The only teams on the outside looking in that I think have a legitimate shot are Hamline and the Oles.  I believe the two teams split their head-to-head meetings this year.  Either way both will probably need to win at least 5 of their final 8 games to make it in.  What does everyone else think??

One final note.  I had heard "Auggie Tech" had a pair of new additions to their roster and sure enough my source was correct.  Looks like Coach Greiss added guard Floyd Daniels (Burnsville HS and then Minneapolis CC) and Brady Soule (Lakeville South HS and I believe he played football at Augustana this fall).  Definitely two nice additions.

New additions to Auggie Tech is old news. But how about the holdovers?

Jonathon Gholson has been a part of the Techsters since the 2002-03 season. I played against him then in a game where he got 27 minutes and I'm old. He's averaging 8.4 this year, his super not-so-duper senior season.

But at least he hasn't quit yet :-*
