WW, just started watching with about 15 to go. Cole was playing then. Saw him hit a 3 and a driving lay-up. He hasn't played in the last 7 minutes.

Mac beats SMU 68-65 to break a ridiculously long losing streak. Conboy had 26 and Abe 16 I think. And I think this moves Conboy past Ben Van Thorre to become Mac's leading career scorer.

This info from the live broadcast by SMU.

The pipes drop yet another game.  They kept it close with flashy passing from Hayes and the home town kid.  Anderson has 11, Hipp with 22.  Scott shot the lights out with 26 and McCoy played well chipping in 14.  St. Thomas is a complete team, they play well together and they play within their roles.

Gusties 69 - 54 Royals (Paulson cementing his status of MIP  ;))
STO 69 - 45 Cobbs

Yeah.... how bout that SMU MAC game? With a center scoring as much as he did, you would think it'd help to have some height in there.

Any talks for who gets freshman of the year? That kid from St Thomas could really play.

Was at the GAC/BU game tonight and have a few thoughts:

1) The Gusties played solid. Not spectacular, but very solid. Lots of good passing, hard crashing the boards, great defense, and a pretty much even keel the whole way through.

2) Moberg dominated the post early on, as WW reported, but in the second half, I can't remember him making a play. Meanwhile Paulson ripped everyone up inside in the second half. He looked timid and out of position early, but then made some nice post moves and hit a few shots he shouldn't have, including a seventeen foot jumper from the top of the key and a writhing lay up through two defenders. Paulson was the stud inside tonight when it mattered.

3) GAC hit some threes tonight, showing no hesitation launching from outside. And they hit quite a few of them, too. It was a different look than when I've seen them earlier in the season, when they didn't look to take as many shots from the outside.

4) Madson hit nearly every fifteen foot turnaround fadeaway in the second half, although he clanked just about every three and didn't look all that spectacular. BU did not play well offensively, and were broken by the GAC offensive system on the other end.

5) Not much of a crowd in attendance. Little noise at all, quiet as a church. The only real action from the crowd was when a front row BU fan jumped up to protest a call and landed in bounds, right in front of the ref as everyone was coming down the court. The ref actually stopped the game, had an official sit by the kid, and watch him the rest of the half. It was quite comical.

6) Jeff Reck looks like Taylor Hicks with his gray hair.

Reporter: Charles, is there anything about the incident you regret?

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

Is there any way we can make the playoffs a four-team thing? Outside UST, GAC, SJU and CAR, name me one team that truly deserves to be in the playoffs? NONE!

No doubt about it he is a good player...but also no doubt about it Will Wright is the most dominate freshman in the miac and it shows in the scoring leaders list i believe he is 3rd....he might not get it because of their poor record, but if it is given to the "BEST" freshman it is clearly Mr. Wright

The Gustie Royal game was a very tight game throughout the first half.  This was the first time I could recall in recent memory when Bethel was actually setting real hard screens rather than just running around the court.  They were running a lot of two post set action with Moberg & Jeff Reck.  Both Corey Laugen & Jeff Reck did a nice job of getting the ball into Moberg from the top of the key.  Once Reck had a pretty little move when he caught the ball at the top of the circle, took one or two dribbles to his left, & feed Moberg on the left block.  Once Moberg catches the ball that deep in the lane he's almost automatic.  On the defensive side of the ball, Bethel was really making Gustavus work for their shots & nothing was coming easy for them.

Two pivotal sequences in the game:  With one minute left in the first half, GAC is nursing a 5 pt lead at 32-27.  Jesse Van Sickle misses a 3, Royals rebound the ball & try to set up for one solid possession.  Moberg slips free from his man, gets the pass, & is wide open, going in for a big momentum changing dunk.  His pivot foot slips & he gets called for a travel.  Gustavus gets the ball back with 0:37 sec., patiently runs down the clock & Robbie Schmidt nails a trey.  So instead of the Royals being down by 3 points, they trail by 8 pts, 35-27.

Critical opening minutes of the 2nd half, Laugen turns the ball over in the Royal's opening possession, Wittwer scores. Madson scores a FT & a basket, Wittwer scores again, & boom, next thing you know,15 minutes left in the 2nd half,  GAC has a 10 point+ lead and looked very, very solid.

On the other side of the ball, you could almost see the wind go out Bethel's sails, as they were forced into a catchup mode & sorta forgot about Moberg & their gameplan.  But if Bethel coaches can keep their players' spirits up, I think we could start seeing the team we thought we might see at the beginning of the year.  I thought they looked better in the one half tonight against Gustavus than they did in their win against Hamline on Saturday.

GAC has at least 2-3 members of the All MIAC Hair team which will be announced at the end of the season.   ;D

A couple of other Gustie highlights:  In the 1st half, FY Dan Schmidknecht had a "migawd did a Gustavus player just do that?" moment when he had a nice crossover, penetrate, & drive into the middle of the lane to hit a nice little floater.  Also, in the closing minutes of the 2nd half, Wittwer had a nice dribble drive & kick to Van Sickle in the corner for a trey.  Mike DesLauriers was very solid with the ball & had a tough floor game.  Plus he got in on a little scoring action, finishing up with 8 pts.

Completely agree....he is third in scoring and not only that, but he can defend and rebound.  One of the things I love about the way he plays is how he pushes the ball up the floor and gets to the hoop.  He is the best freshman, but I don't know if he'll get it due to the cards poor record.

P.s. I'm still waiting for a congrats on my 100th post.....anyone?  ;D
