SUMMIT!!!!!

I've finally figured out why Duke haters hate Duke. Coach K finds kids like Hansbrough, who have D-I talent combined with D-III enthusiasm & energy.

(but then again, I'd rate Laettner in the top 5 college hoops players I've seen play...useless in the NBA, but he dominated college ball in his era like few others have.  And if the Gophers ever got a PG who was half as good as Bobby "Vampire" Hurley, they could be taken seriously.)

Because they would become the North Carolina Tarless Heels and that doesn't sound right,  or perhaps you would advocate a change to the North Carolina No Tar Heels.

PI-
Congrats on your 1,000th post!

I believe I've hit this mark three times now. Pat keeps deleting old threads and I lose post numbers.

It's all in the benjamins baby!

Did anyone happen to notice that in this week's Top 25, Carleton and Bethel are in the "Receiving Votes" D3 Hoops Top 25 category?  Carleton is at #38 & Bethel is # 39.  I can sort of understand the Carlies being ranked after the big win over DII Chaminade back 2-3 weeks ago, but getting votes after the loss to St. Johns at home??

And Bethel?  How do you defend a sparkling, winning non conference record against the likes of Mt Marty & Poor Shepherds of the Valley University (aka North Central Bible College, now known as North Central University) but also lose at home to Saint Johns?

Sheesh, I say let's rank Saint Johns!! Unranked but rising with a bullet!  (Did I actually just type that?  ;))

Quit pandering for karma from the Johnnies posters!   :)

So why is BV ranked No. 9?  They barely beat the Oles and they lost to Gustavus who lost to both Augsburg and to AO's team from the vaunted UMAC.

Some of the early season rankings are still based on what teams did in the past year rather than what they've done this year.   And as we know, the Buena Vista Beavers had a nice tournament run last spring.  I think we'll start seeing some real movement in the rankings after the first of the year and conference play begins in earnest.

In the meantime, Nites  - you can chuck these Dallas Maverick shoes at your least favorite sports personality.  ;D

I think Sutherland hurt his left shoulder. I'm not sure how bad it is but he went out of the game against St. Olaf. I'll see what I can dig up...

Yep. It's his shoulder. It gives him problems from time to time. He hurt it against St Olaf but was held out mostly as a precautionary measure against a non-conferance foe. He could have played.
Well hell...

Losing to Northwestern wouldn't hurt anybody's rank as was shown tonight when Concordia st. paul needed a miracle to come back from down 8 with 3minutes left.  CSP got a few calls and tied it up with a three at the end of regulation and managed to pull it off in OT.  The tommies should be able to give the golden bears a run as well.

Did I mention that once again Northwestern is 3-0 against the MIAC?

Is there anyone Else?!!!!

So should we crown them?   Really I think they are who they thought they were, and I am sure they were let off the hook, we will see if they are around in March...

oh and I did give +K to Drake...being a Johnnies poster, winners of five in a row, you gotta love it

Shameless pandering, Drake, shameless....  Even worse, it worked.   :o

And by the way, AO, that vaunted UMAC team I was referring to was Bethany Lutheran.  Northwestern hasn't played the Gusties.

Dang Nites - why you gotta be like that?  ;) Besides, "The Lord giveth & the Lord taketh away."  I'm not saying names or nuthing, but certain posters have been known to karmelize & smite another poster in the same day. Must be split personalities or sumthing.  ;D

But you gotta admit, the Jays have been on a roll recently.

And yes, I realize that at times I may come across as being biased toward the Tommies, but for the most part, I'm biased toward the league & excellent players.  It just so happens that in recent years the majority of those outstanding players seemed to have found their way to the corner of Cretin & Summit.  But I've also liked or enjoyed the performance and antics of players such as Espo, Trevor Wittwer, Dan Forkrud, & Abe W.  I've also enjoyed personalities like the Johnnies' "Nebraska" twins who were actually from Anoka, the reviled Duke floor slap by recent vintage Gusties, Big Country – Jason Fogt, Travis Jones, Brady Brink, & one of my all time personal favorites - the Cobbs Big E – Keith Eckhoff.  I was probably more heartbroken than anyone else when Keith Eckhoff went down with a knee injury his senior year.

A new player I've previously touted this season who seems to be finding his way is the Johnnies' Todd Hermann.  Off the top of my head, he & SMU's Will Wright, along with Bethel's Tim Madson & Augsburg's Jon Cassens are the best at creating their own shot & attacking the basket.  Madson tends to pull up & hit the ridiculous "How did he make that" type jumper, while Wright & Herman can finish at the rim or hit the pullup.

The Jays are going to be a very dangerous club with Herman, Chris Schwartz, Aaron Burtzel & the FY version of the "AB" boys- Andy Burns & Aaron Barmore.  I'm definitely looking forward to the match up between the old kids on the block – UST, & the new kids – SJU.  I think the Tommies have got the slight edge in height, more depth, better team speed, shooters, & defense. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.  Burns & Tyler Nicolai - wow! (I think we'll see a platoon of Tommie players harassing Burns all night.)
*****************
On another note, doing the comparative scores thing is tricky & sure to mess with your basketball sanity.  ??? Augsburg got handled by Winona State last month while Gustavus looked respectable against Winona.  Augsburg proceeded to get spanked & mauled by the Tommies, turns around several days later & snatches a victory away from the Gusties in St. Peter.  Last Saturday, Augsburg can't get one lousy stop in the closing minutes of the game & loses a heartbreaker to Northwestern at home.  Northwestern then scares the mess out of Concordia- St. Paul before losing in OT last night.

What about those Concordia Golden Bears?  Well, they have a nice win under their belt as they went down to Winona & beat D2 national champ Winona State for the first time ever, & are currently in first place in the NSIC.  Granted, the season is still quite young & there's still two more months left in the conference season.  Craziness I tell you.

I always enjoyed watching Keith Eckhoff play.  He came to play every night, and was an assassin when it came to dealing with his opponents.   His acl injury costing him his senior year was a blow to the Cobs and also to the league.   Travis Jones could do SO many different things---sometimes I thought he fell in love with the 3 instead of getting to the rack---and could rebound with the best.
I love watching Tim Madson and Jon Cassens play; Madson's in-traffic pull-up is impossible to guard.  And Cassens can hurt you from anywhere on the court.  The fact that DP is including Todd Herman in the same paragraph with Wright, Madson and Cassens tells me this kid must be awfully good.  Will get a chance to see the J's play right after Christmas.  Sounds like they have got it going on.
