Well here we are again. About midway through another season. Another season when different people picked different teams to be atop the conference, yet once again its St. Thomas and Gustavus in first and second place. Some things never change I guess.

One note about today's Gustavus/Hamline game in St. Paul: It was about 90 degrees inside Hutton Arena today.

The building was the birthplace of intercollegiate basketball. It's old. Stuff doesn't work. It's always hot in there. They open the windows on the Snelling side, so that's the side to sit in (FYI).

I caught the opening minutes of the game on GAC radio - Pipers were up 10-7 - figured they'd hold on. 15-0 runs hurt.

DP, That's gotta be in the running for quote of the year??

Sum- here's a little more mean spirited, humorous QOW that I heard on the pregame show before the Pittsburgh San Diego game.  During the post game comments after the Eagles – Giants games, the studio commentators were asked to rate the best young quarterbacks in the league.  Sterling Sharpe led off his piece by commenting earlier that in the day he had noticed a sign at Giant Stadium which read:

"Eli Manning is adopted."

Ouch!  :o ;D

He then went on to defend Manning & said he liked him over Big Ben & Phillip Rivers.

I'm a Manning family hater, but Eli Manning couldn't throw a spiral to save his life. I found these stats particularly impressive: His TD to INT ratio was just 3:5 in the Giants' last six games and he did not top 191 yards in any of the last five.

Those are skewed slightly by the Giants locking up the top seed so early in a run-dominant offense...but he's not better than Rivers or Big Ben. And it's not close.

Chairman — I wanted to go to Carleton, got accepted and received a small academic scholarship. The difference in tuition costs between Carleton and the other schools I looked at (Concordia, Luther, Olaf and GAC) were still about 15k a year. It made telling Guy no fairly easy.

MM — Good enough to hype 5 years later, but not worth a Profile of Excellence? I see how you work...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Gophers turn on beast mode against Penn State to go 15-1. Looks like Sampson is finally coming around. This team could be scary good next season with the incoming recruits.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin' back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" .....Jesus Shuttlesworth

i roller skated to 2 games this weekend that i would like to talk about

third of all

i checked out the CAR UST game on saturday...pretty fun game to watch...UST came out with some intense D to get out to an early lead but Zoro led the knights back into the game...second half UST couldnt be stopped for the first 7 minutes of the half and seemed to be scoring at will...CAR kept playing hard but couldn't quite get over the hump to make it a game down the stretch...UST looked very tough and i dont think they will lose more than 1 or 2 games the rest of the way...game got a little chippy at a couple different points...a combination of some floppying and good hard nosed basketball by both teams fueled the fire...

i think CAR and UST have developed a nice little rivalry over the last 5 years...good crowd on hand for the game as well

now for TUBBY!!!!!

the gophers looked great today...it looks like the JUCO boys are starting to get use to the D1 game...both had a nice game...i love the defensive intensity this team brings to the floor every game...they were also 9 for 9 on 3 pointers today

TUBBY GIVE ME A CHUBBY!!!

Best sign I've ever seen a fan hold up was in Fenway at a Yankees/BoSox game in 2006, after the Yankees had lured Johnny Damon away from Boston:

I've heard in some parts of outstate MN they're still airing this piece.  Alex, Bagley, DL, Fergus Falls, Vergas, etc.  ;)

DP, We got this new fangled thing called "cable tv" up here last year! No more test patterns on the telly when I wake up in the morning.  :(

My best guess is it ain't gonna catch on in these parts....Having to pay to watch TV!

On another note....a whole lot of lustre has gone off this Wednesday's Tommie/Johnnie game!  The 3 game skid by the J's has left them scrambling for their playoff live's. The crew from the corner of Cretin & Summit better watch out.

Vicious!  ;D

Here are a few non-temperature related comments on the Gusties -Pipers game the other day.  Tony Thrasher is still injured, & although he played – 13 minutes, you could see that his calf injury still limited his effectiveness & quickness.  Thrasher, along with several other Pipers was frequent visitors to the athletic trainers throughout the game.

Gustavus looked good.  They don't have as much quickness as say a Bethel or UST, but you can see that Coach Hanson has stockpiled up some quality, quicker guards to contend with the likes of those schools, and ward off the quickness of Hamline.  Nice adjustment on Hanson's part to go with a smaller lineup to counter the speed of Hamline.  In the closing minutes of a nip & tuck first half, the Gusties had FY guards Seth Anderson & Tyler Grey, Soph PG Dan Schmidtknecht, I think either JR wing Jesse Van Sickle/or sr. Robbie Schmidt, & Jr. post Ryan McPartland out on the floor.

During the 2nd half the Gusties frequently went small-ball which greatly benefited Ryan McPartland – a smaller, but quicker post player than Sam Paulson or FY post, Bobby Johnson.  Pipes were banged up on the inside & really had no answer for McPartland.

Sr. Mike DesLauriers was solid at the PG, but I think Dan Schmidtknecht (DSK for short) adds a bit more quickness at the PG.  DSK appeared a little more willing, or has the green light to take his man off the dribble, attack the cup, & dish.  I was kinda down on Schmidtknecht during his FY year, but I think he could develop into a really nice, "Sweeney type" PG for the Gusties.

The Johnnies' 3 game skid, plus blizzard conditions out west, & constant sub-zero temps will keep this poster within the safe environs of the Mpls-StP area codes on Wednesday night.  This is too bad - I was looking forward to a Godzilla & King Kong matchup like the Tommies & Johnnies game in C-Ville back in January, '07.  That game was a MONSTER!  Incredibly loud & packed, bands, obnoxious fans, lines for the concession stands & bathroom, having to sit next to some Johnnies fans, Brady Brink going off, etc.   However, the next two beatdowns administered by the Tommies in St. Paul was even nastier.  Miss those days!  ;)

i have seen a couple good signs the last few weeks...

at the CAR UST game a CAR student had a sign that read "I'd rather have a ZJ than a BJ"
obviously referring to Zoro and BJ the old high school teammates who are now on opposite sides of the line

and at the gophers michigan state game a student held a sign up to the Spartans as they came up the steps on the court that read "ALL 300 DIED"

i always loved the sign OneArmedScott brought to the CAR MAC game a few years back that said "Baquero means "Brick" in Spanish"

A more proactive UST student should have gone the other way & reversed those initials  - a BJ over a ZJ.

I'd forgotten about the Baquero sign.  Didn't our politically incorrect friend also have one that read something like - Kootsikas is Hebrew for (was it also a brick?)

Funny.

Speaking of OAS, I had my annual OAS sighting at the Bethel-UST game last week.

Drake...can't you just call Uncle Steve and ask if you can ride up with him??  I know that the shorthanded J's will give it all they can this Wednesday night.  Saturday was a tough one to swallow, with the Cobbs scoring the last 9 points of the game...its a young team learning that they need to play a full 40 to close teams out, especially on the road.

Jason Fogt
Mike Stiller
Todd Herman
Landon Stanfield
Noah Kaiser

Pretty good 5 that are out for J's, would definitely add depth, shooting and defense...

Sheesh.  It's like the CIA around here.  Guys go missing and nobody talks!  >:(

What the story on Herman, a not insignficant cog on a young Johnnies team?  I didn't even know he was going to be out last game.

A BJ is $12, an HJ is $14, a ZJ is $20.

What's a ZJ?

If you got to ask you can't afford it

No kidding Nites.

Voj – You can certainly make a case that the Johnnies' future chances of winning are somewhat diminished with Todd Herman's injury (what's wrong with him?), but these other players? FY Noah Kaiser hasn't played since the 4th game of the season & the other 3 players you listed haven't played all year.  Plus, from what I understand, Fogt opted not to have surgery & decided not to play his senior year.

The SJU 6 game winning streak & subsequent 3 game losing streaks was built on the backs of your active players, & Herman.  Not those other players you mentioned.
