Hmmm PI, i think you might be on to something with that guess work.  Perrel was an ex-assistant when BVT was around a had a pretty good couple of years there.  Hayes would be a good coach as well, he knows the miac and has been working with a very successful program in carleton.

A no big east ncaa final? ??? who saw that coming!

No doubt Macalester had their best run in recent memory when Dan Perrel was assisting Curt Kietzer. He is a defensive guy and look at what made UST go this year - their intense defense - it wins championships.

I wonder who did the recruiting back then, Van Thorre, Russell, Erik Jackson and then Conboy later on. PapaHoops, maybe you can answer that? If Perrel had anything to do with getting those guys (ie he can coach and recruit), then he is the no brainer pick.

With Hayes, you are getting one of the best recruiters in the MIAC. He's a guy that has been waiting for his chance to lead a team. He did a great job under Coach Gilles at Hamline and now Coach Kalland at Carleton.

Then again, maybe neither is interested  ;D

papahoops

Based on my experience, Kietzer's assistants have not typically had a significant recruiting role. I do know Perrel was a respected assistant for Kietzer during the BVT years. In addition to teaching high school, I believe Perrel was getting a graduate degree at the U while he was assistant at MAC, so it would not have left much time for recruiting. He left MAC for Hamline because the Hamline assistant position at the time was more of a paid position, and he left with Kietzer's blessing. I don't think he liked Wohler's style, which is why he ended up at Bethel.

I will say that recruiting will be a key factor in turning around this program. It is not easy to recruit at MAC, but Carleton has consistently out recruited MAC in recent years with similar academic standards. The new coach need to turn this situation around.

Can't win em all Larry.

Wayne Ellington makes me sick (stud)  ::) ;D Can a team shoot any better than UNC did last night, & can a team be any tighter than Michigan State was in the first half?  Oh well, nice run Spartans.  Nice talent & team UNC.

Random Mad March Props:

Pittsburgh's' Sam Young – best shot fake around
MIAC equivalent - Concordia's Keith Eckhoff

UNC's Wayne Ellington runs one of the prettiest pop, curl & shot
MIAC equiv. UST's Bryan Schnettler & SJU's Tyler Westman

Nova's Scottie Reynolds last second drive against arch rival Pitt was fantastic/ MIAC – Mac's Abe Woldeslassie

MSU's Durrell Summers' dunk over UConn's Stanley Robinson  in the Final 4 game was awesome.

MIAC equiv:  The Joe Scott reverse dunk in the closing seconds of the tightly contested game against UWSP.  Big nads.

Good March Madness!

Ok, fast forward 6 months to the NBA – who do you like better?

Tyler Hansbrough vs. Kevin Love
Blake Griffith vs. Michael Beasley

Much good luck to Bryan Schnettler.  Rosemount could be a tough spot to break in as a rookie head coach.  Cmob- I've heard they've got some fairly intense parents down on Hwy 3.

I have to take Love over Hansbrough and Griffin over Beasley!!

Kevin Love will help a team win a championship someday. He will not be a 1st or 2nd option type a guy but as a 4th option he will be better than most guys at that spot. Hansbrough will have a solid career I think and probably will continue to be the guy that people hate to play against simply because he plays harder than anyone I have ever seen. The thing that will level the playing field for him is that he will not get bailed out by the refs anymore.

As for the other matchup, Griffin proved a lot in the tournament about his toughness. Before the tourney I thought that he was soft and all teams had to do was bang him around and he was not good. As for Beasley, I think that he will be a guy that five years from now will be looked at as a huge bust for being a top pick in the draft. He is too small to play the 4 and not skilled enough to play the three.

Just my opinion and I am truely bored at work today!!  ;D ;D

that is what happens when a duranged athletic director fires a coach and hires himself for the pure purposes of pure individual glory only to fall flat on his face, but yet remaining too oblivious and self absorbed to not realize it and re-direct any failures he had on other people...

errrr somethin like dat

Told Watch, You could see it during the introductions. MSU looked like the were carrying the weight of a whole State on their backs. UNC players were all smiles, they looked loosey goosey.

Between the semi final and finals Ellington was unreal. Wonder what UNC would have been like if they hadn't lost Ginyard 3 games into the year!  :o

Willy Wonka

Been swamped at work the last few weeks (remember when I didn't work? That was awesome. Kinda.)...but I'll pop in to share a few thoughts.

Love will be a MUCH better pro than Psycho T. He's a better passer, a better shooter and a better rebounder.

I'm torn on the Beasley and Griffin debate. Beasley has been a semi-stud since the AS break, but defensively he still doesn't have a clue. Offensively, he's more than ready to contribute. Griffin could be a stud...but he could also be a system guy. I like his chances much, much better in an up-tempo attack rather than a plodding pace. I still haven't seen him hit a J.

I can confirm that former Mayo great Jim Hayes had an interview with Mac. I think that was awhile ago now, though.

Whenever I find some free time (it may not be until next week...), I'll share some...interesting news on my blog. Could even sustain these boards for a few days/weeks. It's been kinda dead here/there since the season ended :-[
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

AO

Dwight Howard doesn't have to hit too many jumpers to be a pretty dominant player in the league.

Anyone else think the NBA needs to think about adopting the college style of defense if they're going to become relevant on a nightly basis?  Defensive 3-seconds?  are you kidding me?  That's great that Kobe can go out and score 70 and teams can put up 100+ all the time, but if he's shooting 30 free throws on weak calls, it's pretty watered down.  Maybe it's just the fact that we're in Minnesota that makes it seem like the NBA is down.

Dwight Howard is also the Defensive POY. Griffin just had an article on ESPN.com questioning his defensive ability/interest, much like Beasley a year ago. There were games early this year where Beasley didn't get off the bench because he didn't have a clue. While you can get on the court at Bethel without playing defense, but most coaches make that a requirement.

(For the record, I hope the Wolves are lucky enough to be in position to draft Griffin.)

And if you think the NBA is down right now, you're crazier than I thought. I just sent an email to some friends last night saying I'm ready for 40 in 40.

Heck, we've even got beat writers (who write longer than a certain MIAC SID) hugging NBA coaches after clinching. Anything is possiblllllllllllllllllllllllllllle!
