Not basketball related, but MIAC related - Tommies just played in (and won) the longest baseball game in D3 history. It was a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 17th to win over WSP in Oshkosh, WI.

Longest playoff game in D-III history.

Ugh. Here's some NOT good news about a former Tommie athlete.

http://www.startribune.com/local/east/45017382.html?page=1&c=y

In unrelated news, I had an eerily similar thing happen in my area about two years ago. I spoke to the angry parent who told me all the details, but no charges were ever filed though so I had to bite my keyboard with the story. Talk about a buzzkill...

any idea if that dude related to the girls hockey player natalie darwitz who played for the U and the olympic team?

The last paragraph says they are cousins.

Off topic but proof that the rich will continue to get richer.  The Tommie women have added a big Division II transfer.  Ms. Booth is a 6-2 sophomore who averaged nearly 12 points a game and over 6 rebounds a game this past year.  She was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament.

I usually play in the event, but do not have a foursome put together...Drake, Maniac and Summ...how about coming up/down?  I will buy the first two rounds of the day.  I am really trying to not play any golf this year, because my lack of game frustrates the hell out of me... I will try to get my lack of game in shape for the event...I have two lessons left with the guy who was giving them to me last year, just need to call him and set it up.

Drake if you do come, we will not refer to you as Drake, but as Fuzzy, the Shark, the Walrus or Chi Chi or something like that...

From Shooter:
Former Cretin-Derham Hall (and UST) star Sean Sweeney, 24, has left his director of basketball operations job at the University of Evansville to become an assistant for new Academy of Art University (San Francisco) Division II men's coach Mark Sembrowich, who is a Mounds View grad. Sembrowich is a former Army, Yale and Stanford assistant.

Shooter also reported that former U of M 11th man Travis Busch will likely sign with Concordia-St. Paul or Winona State. He has one year left of eligilbility.

VOJ, Thanks for the offer. The idea of hooking up with the two other esteemed posters you mentioned is very intriguing. Alas, On June 11th I will be two days into my second trip to Lake of the Woods pursuing old marble eyes!

Heading up tomorrow afternoon with Sum jr. for the long weekend.

VOJ-- thanks for the invite (has hell frozen over?), but I think my purple-clad presence would not be welcome. Besides, I prefer to do my "red" giving to the original institution behind the Pine Curtain, not the Johnnie-come-lately University.  Is BB returning to the air in the fall? I assume he will be on the sidelines on Fridays.

Looks like UST has a shot at 3 national titles this spring. Having already won the D2 LAX title in convincing fashion, the Toms are back in the baseball WS (still the only MIAC school to make the WS, much less win it) with many eerie parallels to 2001, not the least being a loss to SMU and a walk-off hit to beat a WIAC school in the Regions.  And a source I respect says if the Toms middle distance men can come through, UST has a very strong shot at winning the track & field team title.
Daughter Of Summ (DOS) did well at NCAAs, altho the team struggled (but the GAC ladies did well)!!

Not that the spring hasn't been rough, medically. UST's top female golfer (and one of the best in the nation) missed NCAAs due to a serious medical situation and one of the baseball team's pitchers has been done since before the MIAC Playoffs due to a mild stroke/blood clots.

Members of the UST coaching staff are quietly pleased with their recruiting class, no names till Sept when they see the kids in class. But the key words seem to be inside size and athleticism. The former was missing the last several years and you can never have enough of the latter.

Sounds like Mac made a very good coaching choice, although I doubt it will be noticeable in 2009-10 due to the lateness of his hire. He should shake things up over there, and hopefully bring them back to being competitive, at least. But it is a nice gym that's for sure...and a sweet overall facility, too.

Totally off topic, but sat thru the Saints game yesterday. Foster served up a gopher ball. Talk about mammoth shots--- I think that Foster was the only person that bothered to look to see if it went out. I believe it landed at the Maplewood Mall. Former Ole Schmiesing pinch hit in the bottom of 9th with bases loaded and whiffed most feebly.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Maniac, Working on a monumental post for #1,000 or do you subscribe to the C-Mob theory that 1,000 is not all that big?

Maniac...come on, anyone who pays the 125 would be more than welcome...Tell you what, if you come, I will make sure that BB will be in our 4-some since Summ can't make it.  Have not heard from Drake, hell he is probably out on the back 9 of some posch country club as I write this...Summ, too bad you can't make it, good luck fishing, so do you ever chase bass?

I think he goes by "Tiger".  What's the Johnnies recruiting class looking like this year?

Should I take that as an insult that I wasn't invited? I'm sure Jim and t-shirt would love to take my money! I could even wear one of the two SJU practice jerseys I have, uh, acquired over the years ;D

(I already have plans for free golf down in the Wing that day, so this is mostly a jest. Though the way this newspaper biz keeps crashing, I suppose the joke could end up being on me...)

Wonka...it calls for 4-somes and so I went with seniority, so with Summ out and the fact that Drake is MIA or just has not responded to my invite, yes you are invited to pay and play...no freebies here, sorry.  The way things are going I don't think I will be fielding a team as it is...
