I'm not sure how many of you are tennis fans, but that was a great Wimbledon final that took place this past Sunday between Roger Federer and American Andy Roddick.  I've always like Andy Roddick's public persona but never particularly cared much for his game.

On Sunday he showed that he was more than a 2-trick pony by displaying the variety & consistency that was missing from his game in the past.  In spite of a heart wrenching marathon five set loss to arguably the best player of all time – Roger Federer, Roddick won the respect of thousands of tennis fans.  This post-match quote might demonstrate how he won over so many of us with his heart, guts, and willingness to makeover his game.

Random Quote of the Day:

When Roddick was asked if he struggled to stay positive after losing the second set, he replied: "You know, at that point, like everything else, there's two options: you lay down or you keep going. The second option sounded better to me."

Roddick now has the choice to lay down or keep going. Given what we have seen these last two weeks, he is sure to take the second option.

Saw "Public Enemies" over the weekend.  Good summer movie, although it would have been nice if they could have included some footage from Mpls or St.Paul.

Hopefully there aren't any little Dillingers running around in the north lake country which might explain Sumander's longer sabbatical from the board than mine.   ??? ;)

It is good to hear that Drake Palmer is alive and well.
It has been a boring day at work, so I decided to check out the MIAC Basketball archives.  Here are the top 10 most surprising things I learned while purusing the records:

10.  The MIAC archives prior to 1968 are rather sketchy.
9.   Steve Fritz has been named MIAC coach of the year 11 times!
8.   Bill Sexton (Sexton Arena?) was All-MIAC in 1955.
7.   Dave Boots (Augsburg), current USD hoops coach, was All-MIAC in 1979.
6.   Former Augsburg coach Brian Ammann was apparently a better player than
       coach.  Way better.
5.   Former Macalaster coach Kurt Keitzer (St. Thomas) was All-MIAC in 87 and 88
and finished 2nd and 3rd in scoring those years.
4.   The MIAC used to hold a "Player of the Year" banquet.
3.   Gustavus coach Mark Hanson was All-MIAC four years!
2.   Kelby Krabbenhoft, father of UW's Joe Krabbenhoft was an All-Conference
Honorable Mention in 1980 while playing at Concordia.

And the number 1 most surprising thing I learned while purusing the MIAC archives:

1.   George (Hor-Hay) Drouches (St. Mary's) was All-MIAC in 1978 and tri-coach of
       the year in 1985.   ;D

Supe - thanks for the exhaustive research.  ;)+K for your efforts.  Here's a little more info I've picked up in the last few days or so...

1) I drove by UST the other day & demo work has begun on the old Shoe. The new fieldhouse will be nice but I don't know if I'm going to like the idea of having to walk the equivalent of 2-3 blocks to check out a game. It was the old spur of the moment after work drive bys that turned me into a league fan.

2) (A little poster baiting) – I happened to notice that AO's arch high school rival & personal whipping boy (not), Brett Winkelman of NDSU signed with an Italian team. Winkelman turns his back on Long Prairie  ;D

3) And while reviewing the Howard Pulley Summer league rosters, I noticed a few D3 names scattered across the various team rosters.  Trevor Wittwer of Southwest State (hunh? & Gustavus, Isaac Rosefelt of Bowling Green & UST, Joe Scott – UST, Jontae Koonkaew – UWRF, & Carl Hipp from Hamline.

Nothing to get excited about -a typo by the Howard Pulley staff.  With the constant shuffle & change of player personnel on the various Pulley summer league teams, it's easy for something like this to happen.

As I would think you might know, Wittwer graduated from Gustavus & spent last year overseas playing for a German  team.

Hipp, UWRF's Jontae Koonkaew & incoming Carlie FY, Tommy Sawatzke all play for the same team – Pat Madison Magic.

Local –what's the story on this Sawatzke kid?  I'm guessing he's got some game if he's playing in the Pulley league as an 18 year old. Granted, the Madison team looks to be one of the weakest teams in the league along with a high school team.

I forgot to mention that Zorro is playing on a team – the B-2-X, Wittwer & Ike are both on the Errol Carlstrom Playaz, & Joe Scott is playing for the Sabes/TRP team.

The league playoffs begin next week. Here's a Pulley post link.

Drake - I'm not sure of the whole situation regarding Mr. Sawatzke, but my guess would be that he's playing in the Pro-Am League because he played AAU basketball with Howard Pulley.  That has happened before with other Pulley alumns, despite their age.  I would also add that he is a very talented player and should make an immediate impact for Carleton.
