GAC lost tonight 84-66 to SMSU, but a glance at the box score shows it doesn't appear to be nearly that bad. Care to comment, klomp44?

The Gusties played their starters roughly half the game, while Mustangs played a more regular (I assume?) rotation based on the minutes played. The game was tied 32-32 at halftime before things got ugly when GAC went to its bench.

I'm assuming SMSU didn't have much of a scouting report on the Gusties, so Van Sickle got some easy looks from the perimeter (14 shots, 14 points). Paulson also performed well, posting 12 and 6 in 22 minutes...though he did shoot like I used to from the FT line (4-8). As Loco said earlier, I've heard good things from Biewen...but 3 TOs in 11 minutes isn't gonna help him earn any clock right away.

Too-good-for-the-MIAC Jon DeRock finished 3-9 off the bench for the Mustangs.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

SMU's roster is posted. As Teardrop posted earlier, no Knights twins, but they pick up a potential bluechipper in FY W/F Chris Palmer from Bethlehem Academy.  Willy was singing the praises of this kid earlier this spring.

Palmer averaged something like 26-15 against small-school competition last year and led BA to state (along with Drew Mathews, who's playing at UST). He has good range and is a very good rebounder at 6-4ish. His squad played almost exclusively zone, which could put him behind the 8-ball in terms of PT to start the year. I didn't see the new guy coach down south last year, so I can't speak to his tendencies there.

But Palmer could easily play post in the up-tempo style SMU figures to use with Holland and "the other" WW. He's a very nice pick-up for the Cards. With a core of those three guys, SMU could be one of the most fun teams to watch in the MIAC over the next two years.

I'm not sure what to think about the game. We are clearly not the same team as the one who went to the DII E8 last year. I will also say this was our second exhibition game and our second different starting five used. The coaching staff is trying different combinations to see what works.

I was impressed though with your team's performance.

AO, Care to backpedal now??

I thought being a former athlete, you would relate to behaving off the court. Apparently getting caught stealing, then getting suspended from basketball wasn't enough for Royce White. What a joke if it turns out he's now stealing lap top computers.

On to better news... A great moment at Carleton yesterday. They were doing a swimming event for a guy who died of cancer during his sophomore year, and for the last 15 minutes Guy Kalland brought his team in to cheer on the swim team during the end of its relay. They gave them a standing ovation, then went back into their gym to finish practice. It was great stuff.

Royce is definitely off to a rough start, I'm not going to defend his actions.  I'm also not going to assume he stole a laptop, just because he stole a pair of jeans.  I believe Tubby'll straighten him out.  I've seen Royce play several times, and he definitely appears coachable.

I agreed with Cmob & AO up until that last post from AO.

AO - Knowing the "thin ice" that White was standing on, he shouldn't have been in any type of situation where his actions could be misinterpreted, let alone be charged with theft.  I'm all in favor of kids & adults, getting 2nd chances, & sometimes, even 3rd & 4th chances, but from the sounds of it, Royce White may have maxed his chance card out.

On another note, Augsburg has their roster posted.  Based on sheer numbers, it seems they have the personnel to try their version of the Tommie shuffle, & run fresh players in & out of the games.

As some posters had predicted, SO Marcus Brumm, QB for the football team will be trying his hand at playing hoops as well.  He was a pretty good player in HS, so I think he should do alright.  One other minor surprise, 5th year senior, David Olson is back to take advantage of the new MIAC redshirt ruling.  Hmmpph, Dawgs look like they could be tough, real tough.

And finally, I was saving my pet peeve until last.  Why is Bethel always the last team to post their roster & post their games scores???  Every SINGLE, FLIPPING YEAR!!!  ::)

And then to add insult to injury, they're usually the only game in town during the Thanksgiving break so I have no other D3 choice but to drag myself to a game & watch them pound the daylights out of a school from Saskatchewan or someplace.  I'm sorry, I guess this year's team is Nebraska Christian.  It's almost enough to make a guy quit following the MIAC.   ;)

Fortunately, Crown College is putting on a decent tourney this year & has invited Loras from the IIAC, Augsburg, & UW-River Falls.  Crown will be lucky to make to the finals of their own tourney. Bethel on the other hand ...

TH4L   no surprise here.   guy kalland has been a class act over the years, and it looks like nothing has changed in that department.

dp, i echo your bu sentiments----regarding both the roster and the pre-season schedule.  and because nobody from bu is posting, it makes it even more frustrating.  i doubt whether you could find a bethel player over the last 15 years that has been happy with their non-conference schedule.  there HA$ to be some rea$on they do thi$.  doe$ anyone know for $ure what it i$?   ???

double post coming.    in addition to olson's return,  note that zach krumwiede is back after a TWO(?) year layoff.  i always thought he was a pretty tough kid and wondered where he had gone.  anybody know the story on this?

DP, a little too much coffee yesterday afternoon? Seem just a little high strung.

Drake - The Bethel roster is posted.  The SID is just trying to be a little tricky.  If you go to the BU men's basketball page and click on their roster you have to change the year in the top right hand corner.  The drop down menu reveals 2009-10.

A quick glance at the Royals roster and the biggest addition is obviously sophomore Taylor Hall, who transferred from Bemidji State.  Mr. Hall had a superb freshman year for BSU and I would expect big things from him this year.  He will be a tough match-up for the rest of the conference.

Other notable additions include former Andover High standout Scott Jesser, who I believe transferred to BU from Valley City, freshman forward Zak Mathson from Cambridge-Isanti who is a hard working, undersized power forward and last but certainly not least is 6-6 freshman Taylor Sparkman from Minnehaha Academy. I expect he will make an immediate impact as well.

...and to brighten your day my friend (Drake) I will make an early bold prediction (subject to change, of course) now that all of the rosters have been announced.  My first gut feeling of the final 6 who make the post-season in 2009-10 will be:

1. St. Thomas
2. Augsburg
3. St. John's
4. Bethel
5. Gustavus
6. Hamline

Fire away....

Sum- You know how it is.  Some things just make your blood pressure spike. ;)

Supe- Krumwiede was on the bench in warmups for a portion of last season at Augsburg. He never played, or was listed on the roster but he was on the bench.   Academic challenges & outside issues may have lead to his absence from the game last year.   Any similarities between Krumwiede & Todd Herman at SJU?

LC – I'm willing to bet they just posted that this morning or last night. And even that is kind of dumb how they did it. "Say, let's prominently feature a photo of last's year's team on the front page of the website & make people go on a treasure hunt to find our current team roster."  ::) They should remind themselves of the old Sunday school song – "This Little Light of Mine" & let the light shine on their roster for crying out loud!  ;)

Re. Bethel players:  In addition to Taylor Sparkman, Bethel also picked up 2 other members from last year's highly regarded & ranked Minnehaha Academy – David Burnham & Greg Myer.  Those kids can play some ball. The big question will be how well their game will transition to the college ranks.  Plus, Bethel has also got SO Eric Hugoson back on the roster.  Bethel 34 was real high on him last season.  And they have former Gopher great Randy Breuer's kid – Chris Breuer.  Looks to be a nice recruiting class for the Royals.

I'll list my projected league standings after I pour through my databases this weekend. Not.

That's probably just as well.  Based on of your last posts I don't think your post game observation would have been too objective - "I'll be wearing my WSU t-shirt." ;)

Mebbe, Mose had a last minute change of plans & he's heading down there.
