Pipers lose a close one. The ball just wasn't going in for them today. Brown didn't play. He is out with an injury until probably next week. Hipp led all scorers with 24. He should have a monster year. I think it will be a very solid year for the Pipers after Brown returns and the freshman get some seasoning.

As Yao Stated the pipers had a hard time putting the ball in the bucket from 3-point land.  1 for 12, ouch.  A few observations from the game.

-The Pipers sport an extremely young and athletic team.  They move the ball well on the fast break with unselfish play.
-Hipp led all scorers but will need help cleaning up the glass.  He's contesting every shot which brings him from the basket where he can't grab the boards.  Even though he finished with 24 and 20, his second 20-20 game of his career, he needed some outside shots to fall, which they will.
-Dan Anderson going scoreless won't happen very often this year.

It looks like nellie got his athletic ball-handling guards and wings to run his offense/defense.  It should be a big year for Hamline once Ray Ray comes back.

To expand on the Chairman's previous post.  Carl Hipp had 24 points and 20 rebounds today for the Pipers.  What's more amazing is he did it all in 27 minutes against a quality opponent in Elmhurst.

The game was tied at 38 at the half and was a two-point game with under 3 minutes to play.  The interesting thing is that Hamline did not get a basket from Hipp late in crunch time.  I'm not sure why as I was not in attendance?

Hamline's main problem today was their shooting.  They finished 32% from the field and a dismal 1 for 12 from the 3-pt line.  Tough to win many games with those numbers.

I wonder what will HU look like once Mr. Brown returns?

papahoops

I made the trek to Joe Hutton arena this afternoon and was very disappointed the Ray Brown was not in the Hamline lineup due to an arm injury (supposedly out a couple of weeks). Other than an outstanding effort by post Carl Hipp, Hamline just didn't have enough perimeter offensive firepower and shot poorly from the field/ 3 point line. Elmhurst was well coached, fundamentallly sound, and pulled off a nice road win, but their front court is very suspect and I would expect they will struggle year against  teams with any kind of quality front court. I believe having Brown in the lineup would likely have made a difference in the outcome of this game. Unfortunately it looks like we will have to wait until the MIAC season for Brown's return to action to evaluate Hamline's real potential in the league this year.

Some observations from the Elmhurst-Hamline Box Score

http://www.hamline.edu/hamline_info/athletics/mens_basketball/0910/stats/elm-hu.htm

Looks like it was though shooting day for the pipers only shooting 32% from the field and 8% from three point land.  Hard to win games when the team can't score.

Carl Hipp with a monster game scoring 24 points and grabbing 20 boards.  BEAST

Chris Childs leads Elmhurst with a nice game scoring 21 point on only 10 shots from the field, plus a three and some free throws.

Will be interesting to see if Coach Whitmore will be able to turn the pipers losing ways around this year.  Third times a charm.

TearDrop

SMU opens the year with a win against the University of Dubuque 73-62. The Cardinals had four guys in double figures led by Lukas Holland who had 25 on an efficient night going 7-9 from the field and 9-9 from the free throw line. It sounded like Will Wright struggled a bit shooting the ball going 4-16 from the field but he led the team in minutes. FY Chris Palmer led the team in rebounds with 9 and chipped in 11 points. Up next for SMU is UW-L on Wed. If they can pull off a win against a team that knocked off Winona State then I might think that the Cardinals have a shot to be pretty good this year. On a different note, I am not surprised that the coaches picked my birds to finish second to last but I think they could surprise some people seeing as how they have two of the best players in the league and they are now juniors. The history of the league seems to show teams that have upper classmen as leaders that they tend to be better. I am going to go out on a limb and say that SMU will make the playoffs this year!! (Maybe a little over excited after a win to open the year)

toolmore

I agree with bendres01. Carl Hipp is without a doubt a beast. However, Whitmore better get a reality check if he thinks that Carl can score a third of the teams points on a nightly basis without a little help from others. Knowing Whitmore he will send Dan Andersen to the end of the bench for not making a shot, even though all he likely had was an off night. We have seen it time and time again in the two years Whitmore has been at Hamline, someone will be starting or one of the first off the bench, have an off game and then Whitmore will send them basically to the end of the bench. What a great way to help maintain/build your players confidence, demote them for having one night. A great way to develop inconsistency

Great Observations so far about the Pipes-Jays Game.  The one question I do have is Toolmore - are you part of the "Goose is loose" fan club or the "Zev 4 3" fan club?  I have "particpated" in basketball in Minnesota for MANY, MANY years - so to say you "know" Whitmore - means you have sat down and talked with him - RIGHT?  Looking at the previous seasons stats below, explain to me how your theory holds water.

The statistics below show that with a style and tempo like the Pipes - there are plenty of opportunity to get minutes if you bring more than one thing to the table.  It does not matter if you are the Crafty Veteran Coach in Fritz or Smitty or the Out of Towners like Whitmore or Greiss - The game of basketball is not just about offense.  It is also about Defense, Rebounding, Transition and Match-ups.

Before I start on "DA" (as I heard him referred to in the game), I am going to state he will be fine - he is a senior with height and a good stroke, but since you brought it up (and I have seen these types of posts before and was at the game) I will continue.  Now this could include any player in the league - but player A (DA) must work to do something more if they are not scoring.  If the ball is not going in then you have got to rebound - 2 is not OK.  Also to have only 1 assist when you have players that run the floor or have the "Vanilla Thrilla" in the middle is also not OK.  DA must work on Defense not just on the ball but off as well.  Can't leave shooters open and if you are on the wing - gotta run the wings (something I was REALLY impressed with by the Freshmen Class).

There were several players yesterday that missed opportunities to establish themselves as the new era, but it was only one game.  The one GLARING thing that I noticed about the Pipes was in a game like yesterdays, if you don't have the senior leadership this early in the season - these are the games you will lose until the freshman and sophs get their seasoning.  Over all I came away a believer that the New Hutton Era has arrived and if the Seniors play within their limits and up to their potential - John Galt will win the 2009-10 "Carnac the Magnificent" award!  (That's Right)

It's not fair to say that it's "Not OK" for DA's rebound total to be so low when Hipp had 20 rebounds and basically swallowed any board that came within a 10 foot raidus. The other 2 highest rebounders were Easter(pg) with 4 and Voigt with 3 (only played 5 minutes). Also, it's tough to criticize the kid for not having assists when the team shot 32% and 1/12 from three. Hipp had 10 offensive rebounds and 6 of them were off of his own misses. Those are all missed assist opportunities as well.

You bring up an interesting point about the senior leadership. A few weeks back I came across an interview with Coach Whitmore on the HU athletic site. He talked about  the school tradition, the new recruiting class, and the overall direction of the program. When he got to the topic of his seniors, he went off on how great of a leader Carrol is and how he is the heart and soul of the program (he may have even said he is one of the best defenders in the MIAC). They could have used some leadership in that second half and I'm not even sure if Carrol played in the last 15 minutes of the game. Not saying that he should or shouldn't have, it's just interesting that the proclaimed "leader" isn't called upon in the crunch. I thought they could have used him.

I'm excited about this HU team, probably the most potential I've seen from them in a long time. Coach Whitmore has definitely done the recruiting part of his job. Now it's just time to put together the pieces of the puzzle. I'm confident he will. I will be shocked if these guys don't make it to the postseason. The tempo of the game yesterday was awesome and I'm not sure how many teams will be able to keep up with that pace for 40 minutes.

Greek Tragedy

Point beat St. John's 81-57 and I don't think the Johnnies got any closer than 13 in the 2nd half.

Eau Claire beat St. Scholastica 87-47.

I highly doubt Coach Whitmore's plan was for Carl to score 1/3 of their points. I don't think it was his plan for the starting three guards to shoot 2 for 26. I don't think it was his plan for Ray to be hurt. It's one game. Whitmore has not had the personnel his first two seasons to effectively run his style. It looks as though he has that now. DA is a solid player with a great stroke. I'm all for some constructive criticism, but why don't we give this years Pipers more than one game before we light the torches?

If the number of new posters from Hamline is any indication, it should be a banner year for the Admiral and his Pipers.  ::) ;D  Not including incumbent posters – Miac Lost Prophet, the Chairman, & PI, there are count 'em, 6 new Piper posters. It will be interesting to see how many are around at the end of the season.  Hopefully one of the new posters is PHDhoops reincarnate under a different name. The guy had the posting gift. Pulitzer posting material if you ask me.  ;)

By the way, SR Nick Carroll picked up 3 first half fouls which limited his play in the 2nd half.

TD- nice win by your SMU Redbirds over Dubuque. I'm not sure how strong the IIAC is suppose to be this year, but Dubuque was picked to finish 5th in a 9 team league.  Nice season opener. It also looks like Willy Wonka might be right. FY Chris Palmer had 11 points, & just missed out on a double-double as he ended up with 9 rebounds.

A real interesting test for your squad comes on Tuesday. SMU takes on UW-LAX who we all know knocked off Winona State in an exhibition game to kick off the season.

Time once again for the annual Drake Palmer MIAC Freshmen All-Name Team & other miscellaneous items.

First, here's a breakdown of freshmen & or transfers by team:

Augsburg – 4 FY (includes 1 transfer)

TD- nice win by your SMU Redbirds over Dubuque. I'm not sure how strong the IIAC is suppose to be this year, but Dubuque was picked to finish 5th in a 9 team league.  Nice season opener. It also looks like Willy Wonka might be right. FY Chris Palmer had 11 points, & just missed out on a double-double as he ended up with 9 rebounds.

A real interesting test for your squad comes on Tuesday. SMU takes on UW-LAX who we all know knocked off Winona State in an exhibition game to kick off the season.

Are you really questioning my scouting skills?

I said Palmer would probably be an undersized post at SMU, but he's a good rebounder; he got 9 boards off the bench. I said he's got range; he hit the only trey he tried. I said he'd fit the up-tempo system well; he was one of four players in double figures. What else can I do to prove myself here? ::)

PS - Holland is better than Nicolai. I hope people can finally accept that as fact this year rather than making me read any more debates about it.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I was merely trying to draw attention to your individual scouting skills & deflect criticism away from your game predictions.  ;)
