Carleton comes back from an 8 point deficit to beat Wartburg 71-66 tonight. Rosett and Sutherland had 14 each. Miserable night at the free-throw line for both teams - Carleton was 14-34 and Wartburg 15-26. It definitely looked like the first game for both teams.

Olaf beats Bethany Lutheran 90-50, Jaryan leads the way with 22.

Nice wins by the Northfield boys.  In fact, I would say an eye opener by the Carlies. Wartburg was picked to win the IIAC this season.  So far against the IIAC the MIAC is 2-0.  But on the other hand we're 0-1 against the CCIW & WIAC.

Hamline fans better be concerned about Northwestern Tuesday night.  NW has some talent and & can score from inside & outside.

Point beat St. John's 81-57 and I don't think the Johnnies got any closer than 13 in the 2nd half.

Eau Claire beat St. Scholastica 87-47.

Anybody see either of these games and could give a recap?

With regards to the SJU-UWSP game...Pointers were very impressive, they have some outstanding talent...Krull, Hurd and Moses are a great three headed starting monster...

Krull is a very tough match-up 6'7" with ball handling skills, didn't see him post up much but he definitely can take it to the hole, in fact most of Points attack was based on spacing and breaking down the Johnnies one on one...only 10 assists on the 29 FG supports that...

Harris off the bench was very good...he was comfortable shooting the ball from deep and has great quickness.  Hoelzel looked great doing the dirty work and had some nice dunks.  The Tillema brothers are solid off the bench, its a very workman-like team.

As for SJU...they will be better as the season moves along, had some shooting woes in the first half but doubled their offensive output of the 1st in the second, that was nice to see.

Cobbs win their season opener in OT by defeating the co-favorite team to win the UMAC – UM-Morris.  Nice job!

Tonight, Hamline gets a chance to play the other co-favorite in the UMAC – AO's favorite team, Northwestern.

I like it; Concordia & Carleton throwing down the gauntlet, warning the other teams in the MIAC – "bring it, we're ready to play."

Nice blog Barkley (Avon). You'll have to become the board's go-to stats guy. Now if we could just find a way of statistically showing which post player has the best hands in the conference, or best drop step.  ;)

I forgot to add- welcome back Snow!  Are you doing pickems again?

SUMMIT!!!!!

welcome back Snow...no, I wasnt born when UST beat Maraquette,  but heard about it a bajillion times. Just like I wasnt at the "Riot in Collegeville" (thanks Dad), but read about it and heard many versions of what happened to the point I can almost smell/taste the teargas.

Are we allowed to be creative in our heckling of said striped fool or do we keep it mundane ("you're blind ref")? Will said ref be using his seeing-eye dog?  :D He wont be calling any Rosemount games by chance, would he? I hear their new coach has a thing for refs

I'll be at Hutton tonight, but there is perhaps a more interesting UMAC-MIAC matchup farther south on snelling.   TONIGHT ONLY, A BATTLE OF THE UNBEATENS, MACALESTER VS CROWN           Doors open at 5:30

But seriously, these two teams will be improved from their combined 0-49 campaign last year.  Crown was beaten by double digits in every game last year, losing by an average of 36 points.  Macalester fared better, losing by only 23 points on average.  So, I'll take Macalester to win by 13.

As for Northwestern vs. Hamline, anything could happen, but I do know that Northwestern recruited a shooter from a small town with the last name Chitwood.  And he does have a last-second game winner among the highlights of his high school career.

TRIPPLE POST IN HONOR OF THE TRIPPLE BURGER...

5) has there been any word on the potential for an all decade - all hair team?

Cmob- I feel ya.  Here you go...

Great minds must think alike.  If you're going to create an All-Hair team its' gotta begin in lovely St. Peter, MN home of the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.  They must have a Fantastic Sam's or Great Clips on retainer for the basketball team because some of those guys had some simply, stunning dos.  ;D

Then you have to look at the team that dominated the last half of the decade – UST.  So off the top of my head  ::) here is my short list of the All-Decade MIAC Hair Team.  People can add others as as they see fit.

MIAC ALL-DECADE HAIR TEAM-

Seth Midura - GAC- blonde cornrows (from Wayzata of all places)
Brett Boese - GAC- the candyman
Robbie Schmidtknecht – GAC- He's cleaned up his look, but his first two years he was pretty shaggy.
Sam Paulson – GAC – Ditto for Paulson.  I think he was going for Gonzaga's Adam Morrison look.

Lonnie Robinson – UST - as one of the UST sport dept interns wrote last year- a person could publish a beautifully, illustrated coffee table book featuring the many do's of Lonnie.
Alex McCoy- UST - best dreads in the state

Cody Dyshaw- CORD - smoothest & shiniest cranium in the state.

Honorable Mention

Craig & Scott Schafer – SJU

The final installment of another type of All Decade team will be released tomorrow.

2) has there been any new evidence dug up in the Neil Anderson rebounding mysteries and arguements? (WW was the officer on this case for many years and continues to defend his claims)

3) has OneArmedScott joined a monistary which would explain his long hiatus from the board?

4)  is there still existing emotions or bitterness if a DIII athlete were to be granted a 6th year of elegibility (like that SJU dude a few years back)

2. I recently resigned my post as head statistician regarding NeAl Anderson's rebounding prowess, or lackthereof. I've found that my game has deteriorated to the point where I now make Paulson look coordinated (Sorry, Sam, it was too easy...). The logical excuse would be my foot surgery last winter, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I might just be getting old.

3. I saw oAs a few weeks ago at the UST/SJU football game. He's alive and well. Patty C even let him do the on-air color despite the numerous bevvies he consumed at the tailgate. Oh, and he's engaged!

4. Yes.

As for the All-Hair team nomination...thank goodness for photo evidence that I once had hair. This winter could be especially cold up there.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

And the captain of this year's all name team - Chris "The missing Consonant" Orgas – SJU

LOL! "Is there an 'm' on the board, Vanna?"

North Park had a JV player in the early '90s named Steve Morgan. His teammates called him, "Big M, Little Organ".

P.S. His posts yesterday prove that CMob doesn't need a preseason. He goes straight to midseason form as soon as the jump ball goes up.

what? no HM (at least) for Ike's Half-Fro?? THAT was one scary 'do! Half braided, half unbraided but not combed out so it looked like he stuck a finger in a socket.  Was a scary as the thought of me in red or VOJ in purple

Wow, MIAC coaches are still treating the Vipes and the Cobs like the pre-season Rodney Dangerfields of the league-----"I'll tell ya, I get no respect!"  Will they prove the pre-season prognosticators to be full of status quo?   ???
Pre-season picks are so easy, because nobody usually goes back and checks them later.  Until now.   :P

Let's see how the coaches have fared in their pre-season picks the past few years:

07-08                                  08-09
Picks:             Finish:           Picks:          Finish:
BU                 UST               UST             UST
GAC               GAC               BU               BU
UST               CAR               CAR             AUG (t)
CAR               CON              GAC             CAR (t)
SJU                BU                CON             SJU (t)
AUG               SJU               SJU              GAC

Not bad, coaches.

Go back one year to 06-07 and it looked like this:

Picks:                 Finsh:
UST                     UST
SJU                     SJU
CAR                     BU
GAC                    GAC
HAM                    CAR
BU                      STO

In three straight years, only three teams picked by the coaches to make the playoffs  have failed at the task----the 06/07 Vipes, the  07/08 Dawgs, and the 08/09 Cobs.   :)

definitely loved that one.

and maniac, creativity is appreciated when it comes to heckling.  i was at rosemount this summer, and although the faces were freindly, we were on the court to do business.  i'm interested to see how mr. schnettler does, he's got mr keating whispering in his ear as well.  which reminds m how I always love bouncing around and finding miac connections.

and i don't think i will do pickem this year. but could be pursuaded if no one else steps up.

Good game at hutton today.  Pipers pull off a close win over a Northwestern team that played mainly without super-stud Stephen Hanson.  As usual Hipp led the team with 25(?) or so.  Freshman Schmidt played real well as he chipped in 16.  If Hipp could stay out of foul trouble (only played 4 min in first half) the pipers will beat up on teams on the inside with Hipp, but they still need a consistent 3-ball shooter.  FY Taber reminded me of myself back in the day, coming off the bench and knockin a few shots in, he sparked the pipes big in the first half.

There was a very controversial jump ball with 4 seconds left and the pipers up 1.  Originally it was given to NW but then was changed and given to HU.  Don't know much about it but the NW coach was very upset at whitmore.  Anyone (AO) know what happened there?

Definitely looked like the first game of the year for Northwestern tonight at Hamline, where Hamline pulls out a 79-78 win.  Hipp got in foul trouble but he definitely was the difference maker in the first 5 and final 5 minutes for the pipes.  Ray Brown came off the bench with some sort of wrap around his arm, went 1-4 from 25 feet and called it a night.

It was also clearly early in the season for the scorers table as with 4 seconds left and a jump ball, they initially gave the ball to Northwestern, deliberated for 5 minutes and decided that they were going to give Hamline the ball, though the possession arrow had been in Northwestern's favor the whole half - and the table had confirmed the possession to be Northwestern's multiple times before the jump ball.  bit of a head scratcher and a poor way to end a good game.

Concerned? Never. It's just Northwestern....bring on the MIAC schedule! 1-1 baby!

About the jump ball. There had been a jump at 10:04 in the second half that went Northwestern's way. The possession arrow was never switched. Everything got put the correct way during the timeout. The correct call was Hamline's ball. Wow the Pipes are young. During crunch time in the second half there was continuously at least three freshman if not four most of the time on the floor. Only two games in, but somebody has to start hitting some threes to spread the floor. Anyways, Pipers win. My 3 on 3 team, "we goin' to sizzler," remained undefeated. Solid night--had to go celebrate with a nice triple burger.
