SUMMIT!!!!!

maniac...

Sorry to offend. I thought I was pretty clear in saying I liked the SMU team and that they have some really nice pieces in place. 2-5 is just tough to dig out of, especially when you're on a 6 game skid.

Nonetheless, I hope that was therapeutic  :)

I anticipate this year's HU team will be the exception to your recent disappointments ;D

HUH-- no worries. I enjoy 99% of your posts. Maybe SMU & HU can play in the playoffs, or if both miss the field they can play a special "missed potential" game, kind of like the Bowl games the football Goophers go to   :)  :D

I'm anticipating a large crowd tonight for the UST vs. GAC. There were 2700 people at last year's game, which was the highest attended game in the MIAC last year and you could argue that this one holds a little more significance than last year's game. Should be fun.
Last year's game was on a Saturday, but it's definitely a big game.  Where are all the gustie fans?  Gustavus is averaging 554 per home gome, good enough for 2nd in the MIAC, just behind St. John's at 571 (also has to be a disappointing number for the johnnies).  In yet another area where the UMAC triumphs over the MIAC, Northwestern leads all Minnesota d3 hoops squads with 830/game est. (though also well below the average from the past 10 years at Northwestern).  Is it the economy or the weather?  Maybe they should have a 10cent beer night?

It's you, AO.  I'm sure most of them come out just to see you.... :-*

Tonight the Tommies will find no answer for Waseca native Sam Paulson. Go Gusties!

Finally, a little air to breathe!  ::)

So, I hear there's a little basketball party down in St. Peter tonight eh?  Well I tried to crank up the old analog tube Control Data /Cray Research computer, but it was real slow to spit out any data or trends regarding the Gusties & Tommies. However, I did manage to dig up a little bit of information.  Pops or HU, I expect full credit for the following data if it's used in any of your future posts.  ;)

As I was poring through the data, I was fully expecting to unfurl the Gustie banner & hop on the bandwagon, but here's what I found.

During the past 10 years, 2000-2009, the opening game of the home and away series each season between GAC & UST has gone to UST 7 out of 10 games.  UST is 5-0 in the first game of the year against the Gusties at home, and 2-3 against the Gusties on GAC's home court.

In the 3 GAC wins against the Tommies, the Gustie average margin of victory was 4.6 points. In the 7 UST wins against Gustavus, the average margin of victory was 15.1 points.

The other interesting stat I noticed was this:  In the 7 Gustie losses, Correction (I missed one) only twice has a Gustavus player score 20 or more points in a Gusties loss.

* In the 01-02 campaign, Chad Henke scored 20 points in a 75-72 loss to UST in St. Paul.
* 12-8-04 Adam Tebrake scored 24 points in a 62-59 loss to UST in St. Paul.

In the games they've defeated UST, a GAC player has scored 20 points or more in the win.

**In 03-04, Espo knocked down 20 in the home game against UST which the Gusties won 70-61.

**Trevor Wittwer scored 24 pts in the 59-58 home win against UST in the 2007-2008 season.

**During 00-01, Bobby Johnson & Chad Henke each scored 19 points to help the Gusties narrowly escape UST 81-77.

So you ask – "Drake, so what bearing does all this have on tonight's game between the GAC & UST?"

"Glad you asked." ;D

Statistically, over the past decade UST has managed to win 70% of all opening games between the Tommies & Gusties.

Statistically, for the Gusties to win, they need to have one player score 20 points+ to win, or have 2 players score at least 18 or 19 points apiece.

I'm looking forward to see what happens, and let's see if this last stat holds true to form.

Interesting revelations, Drake.  The Gusties have some talented players, but they are missing that "go to" superstar scorer this year.  The chances of a Gustie scoring more than 20 points tonight is somewhere between slim and none as they've had a 20 point scorer only once all season - Van Sickle's 21 points in the 80-77 victory over St. Mary's.

Interesting, I've got my own theories...  Statisically speaking, when a team, (in this case the home team Gustavus), scores more points collectively as group than the opposition (st. thomas), they will win.  7 out of 10 times this strategy works everytime. ;D

wow, drake, nice research.   :o
wish i could get down to st. peter tonight, but it ain't gonna happen.  these may not be your daddy's tommies, but they should still have enough to get the job done.
i will have to settle for a metro area game (@ aug or ham), and rely on massive
in-depth reporting from those of you in attendance at gus davis.    :)

Preposterious statement of the year - Hamline announcer after a Brown alley-oop
"It's so loud in hear I can't even hear myself think."

Great minutes from Andy Voigt as Hamline is starting to pull away. 11:47 to play - 65-54 HAM
