Talking about what should or should not be called in the closing seconds is pointless to me without some background on how the rest of the game was called. Reffing is a difficult task and all you can ask for is consistency in how the game is called — if it's called tight, contact on the final play should be whistled and vice versa. A departure from those standards is the most frustrating thing to deal with as a player.

Given that Carleton and UW-SP combined for just 22 fouls and 12 free throws, I've got to imagine the no-call "fit" with how the rest of the game unfolded. The apparently questionable call at the other end, however, would not.

With that said, I agree that a sweeping generalization about "not deciding the game" is a silly argument. If a ref sucks instead of blows on an obvious foul, he's deciding the outcome just as much as if he were to call a ticky-tack foul on someone running away from the hoop in a tied up national title game as the clock hits zero. Not that I'd know anything about such a call  :-[
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Didn't mean to bring up painful memories--every time I see a mention of the Williams national title, I think of your team and Coach Boschee in particular since I knew him a bit better because of his golf-coaching duties. "You was robbed," and certainly much more painful to get that far and have a call like that go against you and your mates in a crucial moment than the non-call against Carleton this past weekend. (H/T to Boschee and his Central club this year, BTW…)

The game actually reminded me a bit of the Carleton-GAC title game in terms of physicality, in that it wasn't. Both teams play good, hard defense without fouling. I think Carleton would have liked to see a few (or even one) offensive foul called when one of the SP players was posting up pretty hard against our guards, extending one of his arms out so it was basically parallel with the floor to hold off the defender. They called Carleton's Davis for a ticky-tack hand check with less than five minutes left that was his fourth, but the game didn't strike me as being a war or anything like that where there were bodies in the lane all night. Nothing like the Saturday night games I'd see in college in the IIAC, which at that time still played Friday and Saturday night. Those Saturday games, by the second half, were brutal, knock-down, drag-out affairs.

That's why the final call was so hard to stomach--the game was cleanly played, IMO, for the first 39:58.

With the season concluding, I'm guessing it'll get pretty quiet around here.

I have a question though, one that I've been wondering for a while - how did Augsburg ever land Devean George? He came out of a nice Twin Cites program (BSM) and had to have been seen by scholarship colleges.

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Devean was about 5'11" coming out of BSM. In short, very late bloomer.

Going through MIAC withdrawl. Thank goodness we leave for our spring break trip (I also coach women's golf here at Carleton) on Monday.

Devean was a 6'2" guard coming out of high school.  I know a few of the MIAC schools were recruiting him but I'm not sure if he got any scholarship offers.  What made him really good was the fact that he grew 6 inches in college and he maintained his guard skills.

I'm done arguing about officials on here. It seems like that's all I've done this season. I looked at the sequence a couple of times on the Sutherland drive, and a Steven's Point player gets in the shot when the contact happens so it's a blocked view and hard to tell from the video if it was a foul. I think it would've been hard to justify a call there in that situation. On the other end, Jonker reached in and hit the guy's hand, that was a foul. Lord knows I've hand my UST blinders on plenty of times in the past on controversial calls, so it all evens out.

Regardless, a great effort by the Knights in a hostile environment. I'm praying for a miracle this week that Tubby Town can win the Big 10 Tourney. I think I have a better shot of winning the Powerball and letting Uncle Sam have half my winnings.

From the looks of that ten-year spread, this last season was an anomaly for Hamline. Nice job, Pipers... it's always good to see a team rise up like that.

Thank goodness for March Madness!

Montana Grizzlies beat Weber State 66-65 for the Big Sky conference tournament championship.   Montana was down 40-20 at the half, but behind the 2nd half play of Anthony "Shake & Bake "Johnson, they outscored Weber State 46-25.  Johnson, a 6-2 guard had 8 points at the half, but exploded for 34 points in the 2nd half, as he scored 42 of Montana's 66 points.  :o :o ;D Dang!

Ooops -  didn't realize this was a milestone post...

Jake Zivin, a 2007 Carleton grad and former sports info student worker, is the sports director of KECI-NBC up in Missoula. It's been quite a year for U of Mont. sports with football and now men's basketball. Here's a link to Jake's report last night.

CSid - thanks for the link. I watched it & if what Jake Zivin reported was correct, Johnson scored the last 21 points for Montana!  That's a bigtime Kirby Puckett type of performance.

I only saw the last 6-7 minutes of the game, & he was fairly spectacular.  I'm sick to my stomach if I'm Weber State.   ;)

Pretty quiet in here. Any recruiting news? I've got a nugget...

Rochester Lourdes' Sam Daly appears to be a pretty hot commodity within MIAC circles. At least in southern MN. He's a rail-thin 6-5ish wing with a nice touch on the perimeter. I don't see him having a Palmer-like impact, but at least SMU and STO are hot on his trail. I'm hearing UST is a late-comer to his party but also receiving consideration.

He'd be a good fit for the Cards...but Bethel could also make good use of his, uh, defensive "abilities."
