Sum - what's happening up in your part of the world August 5th-7th?  I was thinking of heading up to lakes country for a weekend getaway next month & all of the decent hotels seemed to be booked in Alex & Detroit Lakes.  The surrounding weekends seem to be relatively normal. Could it be that I go on vacation so infrequently that I didn't realize this is typical weekend traffic for resort type of towns?

DP August 5,6,7 Would be WE Fest weekend here in DL, great for the economy, but not so much if you are looking to vacation here that weekend

Summer reading/ movie recommendation:  If you’re a fan of mystery novels, I would recommend The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Ironically, daughter #1 read this book on our recent trip to Colorado to see daughter #2. She recommended it as well. She compared it to the Dan Brown novels (Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons).

There's no such thing as an easy run

Come to D3hoops for all of your answers!  Thanks Sum I could have been battling it out with all those straw cowboy hats & the like.  +K manana.  ;D Is Sawyer Brown playing up there this year?  Before American Idol, they were created on some TV show.  Age is catching up with me - what show was that?

I guess I'll have to to find another weekend to go north.   Maybe, I'll go south past Willy's stomping grounds & get some tranquility & quiet with the good Amish & Mennonite folk of SE MN.   ;)

Sum - If daughter # 1 has the book I'd give it a go.  There are a couple of terror inducing scenes in that book. Book 2 - "The girl who played with Fire" is shaping up to be an even rougher reading ride!

What's up board?  Upcoming Triple play...

Things I did on my way to a mini-summer vacation.

Officially- I recognized that World Cup would be a great sales opportunity, so I enlisted some cute Charles Dickens type grade school orphans to sell those godawful vuvuzelas outside the front door of some of the popular watering holes and restaurants in the twin cities the past 3 weeks – Pancho Villa, Midtown Global market, Brits, Nomad, Sweetwater Grill etc.  Sales have been absolutely outstanding.  I should be able to pack up my belongings & retire to the south of beautiful Belle Fourche, South Dakota in several weeks.  :D

You mean Spearfish?

Oh, Rumpelstinkypants is back! Great :P

Pretty sure I've worked vuvuzelas into two non-related stories I've written so far since the World Cup started. Reminds me of how I managed to sneak 2pac lyrics into every single philosophy paper I wrote during my time at GAC without getting called out — and I was one class away from majoring in that stuff. Oh, the little joys in life :)

On a serious note for the officials among us...

When you're making a deadball throw in (ie NOT after a made basket), what are the rules in terms of movement from the passer? I've always been under the assumption that you must keep a pivot foot and aren't allowed movement...but then a Star of the North official allowed a kid to move about 3 feet to make such an inbounds pass.

We were up 30 so we didn't really argue...but then he came over and tried to explain it to us afterward. We had three licensed officials on our team so it got a little heated. Still, he was willing to fight to the death about it, which is the only reason I'm questioning my knowledge.

Anyone have a rule book handy? What's the official language say?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

In a year or two old HS rule book the throw in spot is defined as a rectangle 3 ft wide with unlimited depth (i.e. no pivot foot required, 4-42-6)

Drake-
Hamline is breaking ground on a new student center on the southwest corner of campus in 2011.

Yeah, I don't have much else.

The Tommies aren't exactly running away with the lead in the facilities race.  Northwestern is also building a new student center on the banks of lake Johanna.  The Tommies might have the newest gym in the conference, but it isn't the biggest and even if it was I'm not sure they would be able outdraw the Gusties or Johnnies.

I had the same argument with a ref this winter at a city league game about not moving the pivot foot on the in-bounds, and I lost.  I'm positive I've seen it been called traveling before without argument from anybody, but I can't remember when or where.

Biggest doesn't always mean best.
Certainly not, otherwise we might think St. Mary's, Concordia and St. Olaf were the best places to watch a game.  I thought Concordia's gym was pretty awesome when the whole town of Long Prairie would get in buses to watch our Indians beat the hated Staples-Motley Cardinals, but a quick look into recent cobber basketball history doesn't show a single contest with more than 1000 fans.

I'd rank the MIAC gyms:
1. Gustavus
2. St. John's
3. St. Thomas
4. Hamline
5. Carleton
6. Bethel
7. Macalester
8. Concordia
9. St. Olaf
10. Augsburg
11. St. Mary's

Highlights from Pulley League tonight: The Goose is still on the Loose!  Rosefelt looked solid as well despite having to bounce back from what looked like a mild concussion from a Cam Rundles elbow.  Carl Hipp also looked bigger than last time I saw him, judge for yourselves.

Would that be the new UST gym or the old one?

In hoops news, a few weeks back I noticed in the Pioneer Press that Forest Lake's Zach Riedeman has apparently committed to UST.  Based on what a couple of friends told me who still closely follow high school hoops, he should be a real nice get for the Tommies.  Riedeman is an athletic, 6-5/6-6 small forward who's equally adept muscling inside, or stepping out to hit the jumper.

***
Construction news - I happened to drive by UST yesterday & noticed that they've begun the demo phase of the new student center in the old parking lot for the Shoe.  It's almost embarrassing the amount of new construction that's taking place at UST.  Is there any other noteworthy construction taking place at any of the other MIAC schools?  I believe I read someplace that Concordia is getting new artificial turf for their football & baseball fields. Wow. :P ;)

Given the current economy & increasing tuition rates, it's going to be tough to compete with St. Thomas in this new facilities arms race.  It will be interesting to see if the new UST facilities translate into sustained success for the football program.  Certainly Coach Fritz & the basketball program have successfully reinvented themselves year after year.

From a student perspective, I think we'll continue to see more MN kids show up on the rosters of the WIAC schools.  Anecdotally, in the last couple of years I've already seen some real solid ball players from the metro area go to schools such as UW-River Falls, UW-Stout, UW-Eau Claire & to a lesser extent UW-Superior.  Jontae Koonkaew, Wade Guerin & Brady Hannigan at River Falls; Jerrel Einerson- Matthews & Eric Hostetter at Stout. It seems both River Falls & Stout have got a direct pipeline to TC area schools.

On a national level I think we'll continue to see the WIAC schools do quite well for themselves.  They've got solid schools, affordable tuition, plus an excellent, competitive league with successful basketball programs.  Unless our MIAC schools can make some type of adjustment in their recruiting & financial aid packages, & overall style of play, I think we'll continue to see this player exodus  ;) & lose some of these student-athletes to the WIAC & in some cases, NAIA schools.

And don't forget Ross Forman to UWSP by way of Wyoming and Loyola (IL)...   :P  ;)

Thanks for that. I've never heard of that before, and it seems kind of odd to basically leave it up to a judgment call with regard to 3 feet. I know I specifically asked a few MIAC refs in my day if I could "move" on such a throw-in and was told no.

Any chance the college rulebook says something different?
