Cougs over the Cobbs 65-63
Nice little video highlight packaged with a Glas interview, but after watching it i'm pretty sure it must have actually been 63-0 Concordia.
UMAC: 3 - MIAC: 2.

This was without preseason UMAC player of the year Eric Dalbey as well.  If Dalbey would have been playing I am guessing this would not even have been a game.  BTW nice W for the Tommies over CSP as Concordia is no cupcake this year (Olafeso twins are very tough).

after playing ndsu tough, cc of north struggles with a umac team-morris cougars??  really?    :o  the apocolypse IS upon us!
does anyone know who is picked to win the UMESS  this year?   ???
ust's win over cc of the south was no surprise, though i WAS disappointed to see that tommies have done nothing to get rid of their hideous  purple, impossible to read web pages.   ::)

UM-Morris is picked to win the conference & Dalbey is preseason POY in the UMAC if I'm not mistaken.

More later... 8-)

These are both correct, however Dalbey did not even play in the game.  Typically there is only two squads in the UMAC that can beat MIAC teams and those teams are NWC and UM-Morris.  Although this year, when Dalbey returns, UM-Morris would do very well in the MIAC league, apocolypse is on us I guess.

I follow Oregon players throughout HS, and try to follow when they head of to college.  That being said, I saw Tyler Pannell ended up at Hamline, and some questions here about who could help put the ball in the basket for Hamline.  Well, lets say this, Hamline got a steal with this kid, he can flat out shoot the ball.  I believe his senior yr in HS he was 3rd highest scorer in the 6A ranks (highest classification here) as well as a leading Asst guy.  I was surprised actually to see that he went to a D3 school.  If he fits the system there, I would say he adds something Hamline appears to desperately need.  I looked at Hamlines last yr stats, and it seemed to me besides the Hipp kid, the offensive options were limited.  He played against some highly recruited guys, and led his team to wins, Terrence Jones at Jeff, who will be NBA, Terrence Ross, Jeff as well, NBA talent. Wiltjer from Jesuit etc.  Not saying he is athletic as Jones, or Ross, or have the height Wilter has, but watching him, you see a very competitive guy, who doesnt back down.  I would think he will have alot of success at a D3 school, and ultimately give Hamline some extra offensive options.  I think you Hamline fans got very lucky in this kid.

Last years scoring options were limited for Hamline?  They had arguebly the best all around scorer in the league, Ray Brown.  This year Michael Campbell will take over where Brown left off (although not as explosive as a scorer).

Let's see ... you "follow Oregon players throughout high school, and try to follow when they head off to college." That's laudable of you to be so all-encompassing and generic in terms of your basketball interest, especially when you seem to be a fan who is somewhat personally removed from the player in question ("I believe his senior yr in HS he was 3rd highest scorer in the 6A ranks (highest classification here) as well as a leading Asst guy." -- emphasis mine) and not in the loop as to his decision-making process (" I was surprised actually to see that he went to a D3 school.").

However, when your e-mail address indicates that your name is David Pannell, and the player that you happen to be discussing here is named Tyler Pannell ... well, let's just say that I'm slightly skeptical that you're as objective, removed, and out-of-the-loop as you seem to be implying. ;)

I in fact do follow all oregon players, and have for years.  Post on many other boards as well.  Maxpreps verifies my indication of scoring, and assists for the 6A level.  Also, all time leading scorer at his HS.  My point of scoring threats was in relation to this years available players, my mistake, not Ray Brown.  Campbell this year to me appears to be the only guard threat if you base anything off of what was done last year.   So my email is davidpannell? so what?  If you want to research my assession of Tylers skill level, just google his name, you will find a plethora of information to help you see I am unbiased, just stating facts.  And I am surprised he is D3, when D2 options were readily available.   Time will tell, but I stand by my assertion that he will be a huge asset to Hamline.  And can offer what a previous poster was unsure of, which is a shooter who can spread the defense, and offer the outside threat they apparantly are in need of.

Thanks GS - you beat me to the punch & you can be the board enforcer.   ;)

Cougs over the Cobbs 65-63

UMAC: 3 - MIAC: 2.

Basically what we've seen & know is this - the top couple of teams in the UMAC – can beat the lower midlevel and bottom division MIAC teams. Nothing new here.  :-*

I'll post a final MIAC non-conference record after all the games have been played by the first of the year.

What we're waiting to see is what the overall W-L record will be between the MIAC & UMAC this season.  In what is obviously a down year for the MIAC, we obviously won't be seeing the gaudy 14-1 record as the MIAC posted last year in beating the UMAC.  But when all is said and done, I would expect that the MIAC will continue its annual conference dominance, yawn over the UMAC.  ;)

Which brings me to the Cobbs.  Stinko shooting performance. Their Achilles heel decided to go on display in front of 350 people in Moorhead last night as they shot a frosty 20-57 FGA for a very cool 35%.  Their 3pt- shooting must have been riding the arctic front that's scheduled to come in and they were even cooler from behind the arc – 5-23 3FGA for a frigid 22%.  They're going to have a tough time contending for a league playoff berth if they keep shooting like that. The good news was that this stinko game took place in November & not in January or February. But if I'm a Cobber fan I would still be very concerned with their shooting.

Cord hasn't had a reliable outside shooting threat for nearly 5 years.   This makes what Luke Linz did with lesser talented teams all the more impressive.  Linz's range was really only out to 12-15 feet, & all opposing teams knew this, yet he was able to carry to Cobbs to the playoffs.  This year's version of the Cobbs will need to find their "Luke Linz" or find a consistent outside threat.

Drake,
I think we all can agree that the UMAC has some horrible teams in their conference (I.E. Crown and Northland) however the top 3 teams can normally compete with the MIAC teams.  UM-Morris, without the POY, beat a midlevel Conc team that will be a darkhorse in the MIAC IMHO.  Heck when I played we were 2-1 against the MIAC and beat the preseason number 1 by 10.  What I am trying to get across is; the UMAC is a lot stronger than before and continues to get better.  I am not saying that the UMAC is stronger or equivalent to the MIAC but we are getting better.

fanofball - Welcome to the board. To expand a bit on what the other poster said.

After a few years of following the board, a poster tends to get a bit, how shall we say, skeptical when a new poster signs on & in their very first post they're touting the abilities of a specific player. And to boot, they share the same last name of said player.  ;)

For your sake and that of Hamline's, I hope you're right. In an exhibition game and one non- conference game, young Mr. Pannell  played in one game against Northwestern for 10 minutes, was 1-1 3FG for 3 pts, 3 PF, and 2 steals.  I've been contending all along that Hamline needed an outside threat along with another serviceable post player if Hamline hopes to make a return trip to the league playoffs.  Mebbe your guy might be one of those guys.

What many young guards coming into the college ranks don't realize is how hard they have to work without the ball in their hands, to get a good quality look. They have to get beat up & run around screen, after screen & finally they might get to touch the ball, only to realize they have to pass because someone else has a better look at the basket.  Then go back down the other end of the floor & play solid defense.

When they finally can take a shot, they better be ready to shoot because the defensive closeouts happen a lot quicker than they did in HS.   Recent players who excelled in this facet of the game were UST's Bryan Schnettler, SJU's Tyler Westman & Concordia's Keith Eckhoff.  One thing they all had was a little more size than Pannell which helps rubbing off all of those screens & shooting over the top of their defenders.   Schnettler was  6-2, Westman 6-3 & Eckhoff 6-3.  How quick & or strong is Pannell? If he's quick, it should help AND if he's willing to get his nose dirty playing defense. Hamline's got a couple of other smallish guards & at times their size works against them on the defensive side of the ball & getting separation from their defender while on offense.

I'm looking forward to seeing Pannell play & will offer my two cents worth when I do.
