Whoa, easy there big fella, easy, there you go.  ;)

Stick around, I think Hoops didn't get his quota of caffeine for the day.  :)

Since there's no other there activity on the board – I'm all for chiming in.  8-)

Unless I'm former high school great Steve Sir from Cretin or mebbe Bryan Schnettler from UST, I'm not too sure there's anyone in this league who by design should be a dedicated 3 pt shooter. Even Schnettler learned how to take it strong to the rack & then developed that sweet step back three – awesome move by the way. Arguably his step back was one of the best moves in the league over the past 5-6 years.

Other personal favorites were SJU's Tyler Westman when he would run a pop off a down screen & take the shot from the elbow or the top of the key for the triple.  Cord's Keith Eckhoff & his smooth head & shoulder fake, one dribble drive, or one dribble pull up. And then Bethel's Tim Madsen's fadeaway jumper! For four years I kept swearing to myself that his shot wasn't going in.  For four years he told me & other doubters to quit swearing!

Back to Pannell.  In Hamline's last game Blazer was 2-9 and all were treys attempts?  No knock on him, but like Hoops said, only 2-3 of them came within the offense & one was the obligatory "heat check" which I don't mind.  But if you miss that one, you go back to running the offense & looking for the shot when your feet are set & you're balanced.  In the meantime he should keep working on his footwork, cuts, catching & shooting the ball in rhythm.  Just my two cents worth, I'll see him live in the next few weeks.

In the meantime I'm thinking Justin Wasik from MAC might be a serious deep ball threat.

Anyone know if UST will have video for their home games this year (or, specifically, this one and the one they play against Point later in the year)?

Sounds like Mose needs to check his meds.  Let's see if your Tomcats can get the best of the Wildcats in football this Saturday, before you start chasing off the Pointer dogs from UW-SP.   ;)

PS- is that breakdancing male cheerleader still with Stevens Point or has he graduated?  He was a tough act for the UST cheerleaders to follow.   :D

and $4 to park 300 blocks from campus (as per the typo on the UST site...but the chilly walk felt like it)

UST -UWRF observations

It cost 4.00 buck to park in the ramp?!?!? ???

Well here's my take.   I'm in pretty good shape for a middle-aged person, work out 3-4, sometimes 5 times/ week, but the walk from nearby neighborhood streets to the field house is an inconvenient pain in the derriere.  If I wanted to walk this much I'd go to a Gopher basketball game.  One of the reasons D3 ball appeals to me is the accessibility, convenience, cost & location.  Before the winter hawk really starts flexing its muscle I'll need to find better parking & walking arrangements.

Because of even more campus construction – the new, ginormous student center being built,  ::) all the shortcuts a person could previously take are boarded up.  I had to walk the equivalent of 4-5 blocks just to get inside the field house.  Once inside I realized that inflation had also hit UST & game tickets are now $7.00 instead of 6.00.  Fortunately I'd read UWRF's post before heading over for the game which reminded me that the Tommies sell those stupid 8 oz. cups of pop which you spill half of the contents by the time you get to your seat.  So I grabbed a bottle of coke on the way over & stuck it in my jacket.

The fieldhouse is impressive.  Great lights, floor looks good, nice seat backs on the seats on the team bench side of the court.  Nice larger screen in the corner of the gym which displays the game score & can be used for the popular "fancams" of fans in the audience. .Overhead scoreboard which is a nice feature, but it was missing the shot clock.  It would have been nice to have a separate scoreboard which displays the points & fouls of the players in the game.  Hamline, Augsburg & I believe Macalester all have this type of scoreboard.

UST-UWRF Game Observations Part 2

As for the game itself – good early season ballgame.  At one point it looked like UST was going to run away with it in the 2nd half. Early in the 2nd half they stretched their 10 point halftime lead of 32-22 up to 16 points at one point.  But the UWRF defense tightened up, the Tommies started playing some of their bench players & when UST reinserted their starters, they had a difficult time regaining their rhythm.

If UWRF had Wade Guerin & a basketball ready Brady Hannigan, I believe they would have won this game.   The Falcons matched UST athlete for athlete, but the Tommies were just a bit deeper.  Forward Jake Voelz did an outstanding job & was outworking & muscling the leaner UST post players to the tune 26 points  & 7 rebs. He also did a terrific job on defense.  UST also benefited from a sketchy technical called on the River Falls bench in the last 2 minutes of the game too.

Aside from the T, the Tommies did a good job of neutralizing 3 pt sharpshooter Aaron Anderson, & slowing down the versatile Shane Manor.  Interestingly, Tyler Nicolai was fronting Manor on occasion in the post & did a good of denying any entry passes.  At crunch time for the Falcons Jontae Koonkaew & Ute Udo, took turns guarding lightning quick Tyler Nicolai & generally harassed him into a miserable 3-4 minutes to close the game.

However, Nicolai didn't let that effect his effort on the other side of the ball. During the closing minutes of the game the Tommies had 5-11 Nicolai, 6-1 Peter Leslie, 6-2 Teddy Archer, 6-4 John Nance, & 6-8 Tommy Hannon for defense out on the floor. Plus, in the last minute or two of the game they were doing offensive defensive substitution with Nance & Alex Healy. Nance would be incredible if he had a consistent jumper.

Both teams should do well in their respective leagues, and from what I can tell, UST should once again be favored in the MIAC.  But...both teams are going to struggle with larger, talented teams such as ahem, MOSE- UW Stevens Point & from the sounds of it, UW-Platteville.  Stevens Point is huge, & they're got good athletes & players.  The Tommies have got good depth but are comparatively slight of build in the frontcourt & don't have a wide body like Al McCoy to throw at a good size post.

UST is also still struggling to get good inside outside ball movement.  The smaller Tommy Hannon plays the 5 &does a credible job, & Anders Halvorsen plays the 4.  Tommy Hannon does a nice job in the lane but he still gets pushed off the block too much by stronger, more physical defenders.  Nearly all of the UST points in the paint came from nice penetration & a sweet pass, or someone would make a nice move & beat their defender off the bounce.  Healy did a great job of doing this as did Teddy Archer.

The new Joshs – SO Josh Pedretti & FY Josh Pella both look like athletic, physical ballplayers & will be banging guys around albeit from the 6-5 height – so it will be interesting to follow their career development.

As it is, this is a very good UST team with plenty of potential & depth.  It will be fun to track how much they improve between now & the end of the season.

Greek Tragedy

Not sure what your definition of huge is, but Point definitely isn't huge.

Starting 5
Dan Tillema 6'4" 190
Jerrell Harris 5'10" 150
Louis Hurd 6'5" 225
Nick Krull 6'7" 205
Scott Hoelzel 6'6" 230

We still aren't sure if Jared Jenkins (6'4" 210) is playing because he might be trying out for the NFL.

Our two backup guards are 6'3" and 5' 11".  Brezinski at 6'8" really doesn't play much.

I'm sure Krull and Hoelzel's height scare you.  Krull, as you see by his weight, really isn't a big guy, just lengthy.  Hoelzel is a very good athlete for his size.  But, if either of them get into foul trouble, Point is very short.

Not sure what else St. Thomas has for size aside from your reference above, but Point definitely isn't "huge".

Unfortunately, I'm not sure.  It's been a couple of years since I lived in Point so I don't make it back to too many games.  That kid had another male cheerleader that preceded him by a couple of years that... well... was a tough act to follow, if only because the other cheerleaders didn't want to be associated with cheerleading after seeing his "moves."  At least he was exuberant...?

Concerning Point's size... I'm not sure I'd call them huge, but they do consistently match up favorably, at least height-wise with most D-III teams.  There are 10 guys on the roster who are 6'4" or taller.  That's not as big as we were in the first two championship seasons (13 and 14, respectively), but it helps to have guards who are a good 3 inches taller than their counterparts.

Augustana, by the way, has 11 guys 6'4" or taller... but they have 7 guys 6'7" or taller.  A couple of those guys are JV guys, but still, that's a big D-III team.  And Platteville had 9 6'4" or taller.

Height isn't everything, of course... as OS said, Hoelzel is a really good athlete and Krull is a solid defender who has great lateral quickness for a 6'7" guy... and the two of them bulked up even more in the off season and play about 10-20 pounds heavier than their listed weights.

Don't play possum Old School.  I've seen Stevens Point play every year for the past 5-6 years, & they've got very good size.  Are they the tallest team in D3, no, but they're up there.  And as PS pointed out, it isn't just the height, it's the size & talent.  I happened to catch a portion of the radio broadcast when St. St. John's played Point last week & I heard the broadcaster say the Pointers were larger than D2 St. Cloud State. The Jays had just played & upset nationally ranked SCSU several days earlier.

You've got guys who are packing 225 & 230lbs+, that's not small. Plus Krull (?) has that mean looking shaved head & wiry muscle, Point is a physically imposing team.   :D

As I wrote last night here was the Tommie lineup during crunch time:
UST                                       UWSP

Tyler Nicolai 5-11 165lb -  Jerrell Harris 5-10 150lbs: Slight edge UST
Peter Leslie 6-1 175 lbs – Dan Tillema 6-4 190lbs: Definite edge UWSP
John Nance 6-4 185 lbs – Nick Krull 6-7 205lbs: Edge UWSP
Teddy Archer 6-2 180lbs -  Louis Hurd 6-5 225lb: Edge UWSP
Tommy Hannon 6-8  215 lbs (a skinny 215) Scott Hoelzel  6-6 230lbs: Definite edge UWSP

The Tommies have 6-9 210 Anders Halvorsen, but he'll never be mistaken for a physical specimen. Otherwise, the Tommies have got a bunch of guards & wings ranging in size from 6-1 to 6-5.

If 6-4 210lbs Jared Jenkins comes back for you guys lookout. He's the WIAC's version of a bigger, more talented Carleton's Jeremy Sutherland.  And for MIAC followers who've not seen them play,  Dan Tillema & Jared Jenkins are some pretty rare athletes at D3.  Watch:
